What to wear on a cruise to Norway in September?

Can anyone advise me? I have not been on a week long cruise before. I am about an 18/20, hoping to lose a bit by then tho', a young 57. I have some quite nice dresses that I might take, but also some trousers, jacket etc. Not really sure if people get 'dressed up' anymore?

Depends very much on which cruise line you are with. Some are much more formal than others.

Dowser · 15/07/2017 22:24

Plenty of thermals I would think.
My cousin went to Norway last May and it was 3 degrees.
If you wear tights take plenty, they were very expensive.
She wasn't on a cruise though.

ShyOyster · 15/07/2017 22:30

It will depend on which cruise line it is. Having said that, I cruised with Royal Caribbean last year and there was PLENTY full blown full glam dressing up. I have always considered RC fairly relaxed in that respect.

MargoChanning · 16/07/2017 13:35

I'm interested to know as well, as I'm on a cruise to Norway in late August, early sept.

Yvetteballs · 16/07/2017 13:39

Jumpers I expect.

Dailystuck71 · 16/07/2017 13:39

Place marking as we are considering this for next July.

OP you might get a better response on the cruise page on mumsnet.

Greenteandchives · 16/07/2017 13:40

As above. If you tell us which cruise line it is, we can help you. They vary a lot.
Out and about in Norway, you will need layers. It can be anything and everything, often all in one day.

Devilishpyjamas · 16/07/2017 13:44

We are going to Norway on a cruise in August 2018. I was going to go with layers

Devilishpyjamas · 16/07/2017 13:45

We are going with princess which doesn't look too formal

MargoChanning · 16/07/2017 22:47

I'm going on the P&O Britannia.

iklboo · 16/07/2017 22:55

Mix of warm & cooler clothing. We went in August and it was 80ish degrees.

We like to dress up for the formal nights. If you're planning on eating in the dining rooms (rather than the buffet) then smart casual. If it's P&O their website is really good for dress tips & advice.

MinesaPinot · 17/07/2017 09:33

Check out the dress code on the Princess website. I think I am right in saying that they are less formal than P & O (who we're going with) but I could be wrong.

In answer to your question, for daytime I'd have a pair of jeans/light trousers and layering tops with a cardi in case it is a bit chilly. Also worth throwing in a lightweight waterproof jacket just in case.

Evening - as I say, check with Princess so see if they have any guidance on their dress code. Make sure you know if they have a formal or gala night and then have a smart dress for that (cocktail or full length). Otherwise I tend to wear maxis with beaded sandals or knee length with glittery wedges for the evening. I know some cruise lines allow jeans in the evening, but I'm a bit old school and prefer them just for daytime.

Most importantly, have a great time!

Depends on which part of Norway you'll be cruising.
We have a place just in the Artic circle and some Septembers it is warm, sunny, very lovely, some times it's cool.
Take things that you can layer would be my suggesttion.

TakeMe2Insanity · 17/07/2017 14:28

My mum did a cruise of Norway's coast in September off boat she wore a good waterproof coat with a hood, walking boots, jumpers, jeans things that could be layered. She said on some trips it was quite cold and the weatherbwould change suddenly.

On board it depends on the cruise line.

Deathraystare · 22/07/2017 18:53

Thanks all. I can only check internet at work and haven't been in for a while so hadn't seen your replies. It is the P&O Arcadia if that means anything. I tried the website for P&O - something about my P&O cruise but the reference number did not work. I am soon to collect stuff from the travel agency so can ask them. I gues if I take a mixture of bling and smart casual I will be ok. Don't own many jumpers though!!!

Here's the P&O dress code

Loads of videos on YouTube.

Deathraystare · 23/07/2017 15:47

Thanks once again you wonderful ladies. I cannot access the personaliser but will be going into the travel agent this week so will ask them for the code. I have stocked up on warm tights, got myself another pair of comfy trousers and some packs of knickers! Also a scarf and hat. Will need to hunt down my gloves.

I don't think I am on a super glam boat but have enough nice (or naice) frocks I could wear if so.

I have just come back from a week's Norwegian fiords cruise on Britannia with P&O. The weather was not good and I took loads of t shirts and a couple of pairs of shorts which I didn't wear. I should have taken a couple more pairs of warmer trousers, I think. The temperature was only about 15/18 degrees and it rained at our stop in Stavanger: Flam and Olden were fine, and it was cold in Bergen where I wore my winter anorak!

I found Britannia much less formal than other cruise ships I have been on: there were two formal nights in the 7 nights, the rest of the time it was smart casual.

Let me know if you would like to know anything else.

Deathraystare · 23/07/2017 19:44

I am stopping in Stavanger, Alesund and Sognerfjord, plus Bergen I think. I am guessing these are expensive places. Did you get a coach from the boat to the trips or just walk off at the destinations??

I guess I will be taking my hooded padded coat!

Getting very excited now.

Sorry did not realise there is a cruise section in Mumsnet. I am out of time at work so will check it out when next in at work.

Not cruising, but we went to Norway last summer and it was freezing. I had my leather jacket and had to buy a scarf and woolly hat while we were there. I'd brought some summery dresses with me and they went unworn.
