Facial scars

Does anyone know any good treatment for facial scars? I was attacked by a dog about 10 years ago and have a scar down my nose and cheek, around 10cms long. It is about 4 years old. Tried Bio Oil, Vit E, silicon etc but still looks awful. NHS won't do anything. It is really affecting my confidence. As I age it seems to look worse. Prepared to pay now, but what would be best?

How old are you? You might find that it will heal further on its own.

I also have a facial scar from a dog attack - over 20 years ago. I was told that after two years it would heal no further, but that hasn't been true - I'd say that after 10 years it was dramatically reduced.

That's probably not much help, I know, and I'm sorry it's harmed your confidence .

Retain A might help - you would need to discuss it with a private dermatologist.

Ah sorry I see that 10 years have already passed.

But the scar is only 4 years old?

DaveDave · 14/07/2017 21:04

Thanks! Ordered some RetinA from The Ordinary today but guess if it is not prescription it's not that strong. Have you had any luck with concealers?

Microdermabrasion can help with the appearance of scarring

rabaria · 14/07/2017 21:10

To be honest I've never used concealers because the scar has never bothered me - it honestly is sthg I forget about until someone asks, which has never been in an unkind way.

Try to see a dermatologist and discuss retin a and other options.

I am wary of suggesting this sort of thing to people, but. . . maybe think seriously about finding ways of just accepting it. I see my scar as a part of me ( when I remember it's even there), and I kind of see it as attractive.

Have you had negative reactions from people?

DaveDave · 14/07/2017 21:15

Yes you are probably right. No, not negative reactions as such but I can see their eyes wandering to the scar when I talk to them. Never sure whether to acknowledge it. And I hate talking about it! You have the right attitude x

They probably wonder how you got it - I would wonder that, too. I often tell people when I see them looking. No one really cares - their thoughts about it don't seem to get beyond mild curiosity. Most people are mostly thinking about themselves .

No harm in checking out dermatologists and ointments and microdermabrasion, etc - if it helps, it helps.

I hope you find a way to deal with it :)

Sorry to hear about this. There may not be one "best" treatment, but rather several options all with pros and cons. However, Dog bite scars on the face can be improved with a combination of pulsed dye laser, fractional laser, and per-cutaneous scar release (PSR).
