Reiss - overpriced and outdated?

mnpeasantry · 09/07/2017 21:13

Looking to canvass opinions. It struck me today that a few years ago I would often find really nice dresses in Reiss and some really nice boots or accessories. It felt like a sure fire place to find a knock out dress.

Now I rarely even bother visiting their website. I find their stuff overpriced and a bit, I don't know, stuffy?!

I don't want to get down on Kate Middleton because I think she seems like a great person but she seems synonymous with the brand and I feel like I don't want to dress like her. She just feels very safe and it feels fashion has moved on from the heady days of the royal wedding.

It might also be that, having young children and a mum tum, the styles don't suit me any more.

Tell me your thoughts. To Reiss or not to Reiss?

Not to Reiss. That look isn't fashionable anymore.

MinesaPinot · 09/07/2017 22:11

And it's no from me. I was in our local, admittedly small, store last week, and to be honest I found it all a bit dated. It seems to be the same thing every season. In fact the last thing I bought in there was a bag in the sale, and that has to be at least 7 or 8 years ago.

tessiebear4 · 09/07/2017 22:16

I'd say it's very 2006. And over-priced.

Intransige · 09/07/2017 22:17

I can never find anything that I like in there any more. One of my favourite dresses is Reiss from a few years ago but I rarely shop there now.

StarCrossdSkys · 09/07/2017 22:22

They do a lot of quality well fitting smart trousers which are not easy to find elsewhere. Admittedly haven't been in there for a year at least.

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 09/07/2017 22:44

I stopped visiting the shop/website about 6 years ago. It was overpriced and dated back then so it sounds as if things haven't improved.

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 09/07/2017 22:46

I tend to lump Reiss into the same category as Karen Millen and Ted Baker.

Gunpowder · 09/07/2017 22:47

I'd say it's very 2006. And over-priced.

^This. Haven't even looked in there for 6 or 7 years.

mnpeasantry · 10/07/2017 02:18

Not just me then. I makes me wonder if business is suffering and if so, why not overhaul it?

Where do people like on the high st? I tend do a lot of online shopping. I often take a punt on silkfred which can be hit and miss in terms of quality. I think the only item I ever wanted to buy from finery was sold out. I like cos at the moment. I like the idea of other stories but not actually made a purchase there yet.

I seem to buy quite a lot H&M and Zara. Anywhere else I'm missing?

I don't know either. Once you add style woes to natural fabric woes it becomes impossible!

I am living in trousers from Mango and Gap at the moment as I can't find any that I particularly love. I have a couple of Hobbs dresses that I like for work, but they're not perfect (syntheticky), and tops I mostly get from trawling House of Fraser's permanent online sale, although I bought a lovely silk shirt from Poetry the other day. I like blazers from Zara, and I find nice stuff in Jigsaw and Comptoir des Cotonniers from time to time.

Rosiemary · 10/07/2017 09:37

I love Reiss, it suits me and I bought a lot in the sales recently. I agree it's overpriced though and rarely buy at full price. I also like Cos, & Other Stories, Comptoir, Jigsaw, Me & Em (mostly wait for sales there too), H&M and Gap.

mnpeasantry · 10/07/2017 15:50

Thank you both for the suggestions.

I wasn't familiar with poetry, me + em or comptoir so happy to have found some more options.

TheChineseChicken · 10/07/2017 15:53

Oh no, I like Reiss. Does that mean I'm dated?!

TheChineseChicken · 10/07/2017 15:53

It is expensive though

mnpeasantry · 10/07/2017 20:20

Sorry Chinese... don't want to Reiss on your chips

Lucked · 10/07/2017 20:53

I used to spend a lot of money there but yes very little since about 2010.

To be fair I have had kids since then and wouldn't fit. Their bags were good so must look again.

Breezybreeze · 10/07/2017 20:56

Totally agree with the "its so 2006"
I think Kate Middleton was the final nail in its coffin. She's so dull and dresses so prissily. There's not many who want to emulate that.

Lucked · 10/07/2017 20:56

I have just scolded through the tops on the website and not one has a cold shoulder - if I can shift a few pounds I may go back to shopping there.

TheChineseChicken · 10/07/2017 22:00

Very good, mm Grin

I went in yesterday for the first time in a long time, expecting whistles type quality but high prices.

It was piss poor synthetics at astronomical prices. What a disappointment.

Just really leaves Whistles, Cos, a few Cotton things from Warehouse and the occasional Banana Republic thing for me to find now.

I also thought All Saints were taking the proverbial at £140 for a grey t shirt with a hole in the front Confused

littleredpear · 10/07/2017 23:34

Oh &otherstories too

ohms11 · 11/07/2017 01:05

I quite like reiss... I like that minimalist type look, even if it is so 2006!. Besides in my opinion it is not that different in aesthetic from Cos.

mnpeasantry · 11/07/2017 07:46

£140 for a grey t-shirt with a hole in the front! 🤣. All Saints has always disturbed me to some degree.

I feel like I used to shop in urban outfitters pre kids but I think I would go in and browse and wish that I had the youth and attitude to pull their clothes off.

I do still find the very occasional gem in TopShop. I also found a couple of items in Oasis this season too. Though one dress has cold shoulders.

Actually I think Reiss have moved with the times. I think they've realised people don't have much disposable cash / credit any more and that if they're going to carry on charging what they do, they need to sell things with longevity. So they've gone more classic / conservative. It's not to my taste and it may not work as it's already a crowded market but I can see the sense of it.

I'm a bit surprised they're getting such a hard time when they're no pricier than other high end brands (are they?) and, as Lucked says, they seem to have swerved all the trends that are so despised on here.
