Great 'school' trousers?

I'm struggling with school trousers for my dd.

She's 12, but 5 ft 5, very womanly figure. She's generally a size 10 in women's clothes. Kids clothes just aren't cut for her, however I'm finding it hard to find women's stuff too.

She must have black trousers, not denim. Side pockets tend to gape and look untidy. I'd love them to be fairly skinny but not skin tight. Maybe with a slight stretch as she does lots of drama and moves around a lot!

I can't find anything really smart. She's been wearing some work/office trousers from New Look but the fabric is really thin.

Any thoughts?

M&S do school trousers in skinny, regular and generous fit. Do boys trousers fit better? Clutching at straws My dd hasn't worn school trousers since secondary as she feels that they don't look right on her. (She lives in jeans at weekends)

Can you alter the length of a pair of trousers that fit around the waist/hips?

steppemum · 06/07/2017 17:22

if she has hips and is a bit curvy, buy women's trousers not kids.
I have done that for dd1 for non uniform, (in her case Mountain Wharehouse walking trousers Hmm) but the difference in fit was amazing, she just kept saying they are SO comfy.

I have black 'work' trousers from Primark, but not this season.

Trampire · 06/07/2017 17:39

I have bought her M&S before but even the 15 to 16 don't fit her.

I have bought women's jeans and school trousers in the past but the material quality isn't there. She fits a black size 10 skinny jean really well! I wish she could wear them. I need something like that but not in denim.

I'm terrible in Primark. I never find anything. I'll have to grit my teeth and go searching I think

I have some similar to these from h and m that I wear for work. Might they be suitable?

Or you could try mango they do decent black work trousers.

I found some womens ones in Asda that have the zip pockets like school ones and sit nicely, skinny fit. Sadly our school is cracking down and only accept specific product numbers now - sigh - and therefore no womens sizes.

Gap?

LockedOutOfMN · 06/07/2017 20:42

H & M have so many different styles of trousers, if you and your DAD can bear to go through them all, OP, you should be able to find some that are a good fit.

Have you tried Zara work trousers? They are decent quality and not expensive.

CaseStudyResearch · 06/07/2017 20:43

I'm currently wearing Gap bistretch.

Slim fit but not skinny, good stretch in them too. Always discounts for them.

MaisyPops · 06/07/2017 20:47

My work trousers for school are all from H&M.
They do some nice straight cut slacks that would probably fit the bill. They're £12.99/14.99 something like that.

As a teacher can I just say thank you for doing the uniform thing properly though. When we have parents like you who don't take the piss (e.g skin tight fashion trousers etc) it means our school don't have to go down the road of others of specifying which makes are acceptable or going single supplier. People like you make my job much easier. Grin

John Lewis school trousers are fab and go beyond age 16.

here.

I haven't bought that particular trouser before but have bought trousers from their range for years.

DD is just 11, with hips and in a 13 or 14 from memory, she was 5'2 last time I measured her. The JL trousers fit fine in the length but we have to draw the waist in.

They specify product numbers?!
Are they on glue? ShockHmm

I really feel for teen girls who are more curvy (I was one); school uniforms are not made for them bitter memories of ties and bastard blazers plus big boobs Angry

I agree.
But that's what happens in schools when a ridiculous number of parents can't seem to send their children to school in uniform.

I've seen a back to school advert on TV for girls school shirts with peplums! No secondary school near me (that isn't single supplier) allows anything other than a plain, non close fitting white shirt. It was modelled on a primary age child. Why a primary aged child would be dressed in a shirt designed to emphasise womanly curves is also beyond me.
But then there are people every year who think black trainers are school shoes despite the rules being clear.

Trampire · 07/07/2017 00:33

Thanks for the pointers everyone. I hadn't thought of GAP. I normally do quite well for dd there. I'll venture into H&M and John Lewis too.

Thanks Maisypops. It's good to know the teachers like the effort.
