WHAF is wrong with my nails?

Somehow the dirt just pushes its way down the nail bed and they are flaking although still quite strong.

I have had a fungal infection on my toe nails before, but that made them soft and crumbly.

Do I just bite the bullet and chop them all off?

Is this a sign of an underlying health issue/vitamin deficiency?

I was taking B12 and Vit D but ran out a couple of weeks ago. I had varnish on so did not realise the true horror until I took it off this morning.

Google 'fungal nail infection' and look at images

Looks like a fungal nail infection to me. Sorry, OP.

You're probably best off cutting them right down and slathering them in that treatment serum you can buy.

ppeatfruit · 05/07/2017 12:58

Neat tea tree ess oil. is the most effective anti fungal treatment I've ever used.

Shannith · 07/07/2017 07:54

Thanks. Tea tree oil has been applied. I smell, well like tea tree oil.

Grin I use it all the time instead of soap and my family comment on the 'medicinal' smell in the bathroom!! I would also soak my nails in warmed almond oil to combat any dryness.

Trim them right down.

Use a nail a nail brush religiously.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2017 12:02

Trimming won't help, the active part of the infection is on the nail covering the nail bed & you can't cut that.

I would see the GP & ask for help.

You can safely paint over them in the meantime.

If it's a fungal nail infection see your gp. They will cut samples of nail to be sent away for testing. They can prescribe a tablet which you have to take for months or something to paint on. Do not use nail varnish in the meantime and if it's not in all your nails be very careful of infecting the ones which are ok. Do not cut the damaged ones and then cut the ok ones without thoroughly cleaning your scissors in between and do not use the same nail file. It's highly infectious. Do not share scissors of files with anyone else either.

My dp,s nails look the same as yours and it is psoriasis under his nails. He has psoriasis on other parts of his body face too so I can't say if it can only affect nails.. (unless you also have patches elsewhere too)
