Which one should I try and what do I do with it? I wear make up every day but I'm a bit set in my ways. I have an inkling that highlighter might add something - possibly make me look brighter in some way....? But I'm not really sure where to get started. I don't want to go to a make up counter and spend £££. Any recommendations?

I don't use a highlighter as such - requires too much effort to figure out where to put it (I'm very lazy). But if you just want to look a bit 'brighter' all over, you could try an illuminating primer? Or mix a bit in with your foundation. I use celestial skin by Kevyn Aucoin, which I like but it's £42 so maybe more than you want to spend.

I have a highlighter stick thing that I brush over my cheek bones and it does give me a bit of a healthier glow. I really like it, and as I'm a bit useless with make up was pleased that I didn't have to put too much effort in haha!
It's from boots number 7 too, so reasonably priced.

SesameSparkle · 04/07/2017 13:27

phoolani thanks, it's more the kind of product to use on specific areas of the face I was thinking of

ginas thanks, no7 would more my kind of price range

What's the difference between using a stick/cream type product and a powder?

I actually use a Korean rainbow one, which sounds crazier than it is, just a pretty shimmer. That was about £2 from eBay. I can find the exact brand if you want.

I also like the Becca highlighters and the Hourglass Ambient palette, but those are pretty spendy.

Have heard good things about the NYX wonder stick. I also want the Anastasia Moonglow at the moment.

As far as I know liquid is better for dry skin, is less concentrated and can be mixed with your foundation for dewy glow (a tiny bit). Cream is more matte. Powder is more concentrated and better for oily skin.

I use powder because I find it easiest to apply.

I have this one

and this one

I find the skin illuminator better for a subtle look.

BarbedBloom · 04/07/2017 14:00

Lisa Eldridge has a good highlighter guide on YouTube for anyone not sure about what to do with it

sweetheart · 04/07/2017 14:01

this gives you an idea of where to put it

Mac Lightscapade is pretty! Not that pricey, £24 but lasts for ages so it's good value for money. The MUA ones are alright too and cheap

LoadsaBlusher · 04/07/2017 16:13

I use Revolution Highlighter palette
It has three difffernt shades of shimmery highlighter

Also MUA undress my skin highlighter £3 - bargain and excellent

Both from Superdrug

LoadsaBlusher · 04/07/2017 16:15

This is the revolution one it's £8 but SO worth it

You can get a sample pot from Lily Lolo for £1.50, it's powder and quite subtle.

What skin shade are you
Are you cool toned or warm
What is your skin type especially on cheeks

SesameSparkle · 04/07/2017 22:55

Thanks, I've got a medium skin tone, tans easily, with a fair amount of yellow in it. My skin is very oily and spotty blemish prone, even on my cheeks.

I've only just twigged that the colour is important.... Blush Had previously thought highlighter was some random pearly coloured stuff I could sweep over my cheek bones.

So thanks to that helpful pinterest page and Lisa E, I think I've got a fair idea of where it goes. I already spend quite a bit of time blending in my foundation and concealer, trying to get even looking skin, so think it shouldn't be too hard to blend in a little something liquid or creamy consistency, after the foundation goes on. Would love to find the right product to get a bit of that dewy look.

Some lovely looking products linked to from here, but I'm now a bit worried about getting the right colour match for me.

barbed thanks for the LE tip off and the links

sweet thanks, the pinterest page is helpful. I like the subtle looking ones, although I'm a bit scared of the full on contouring looks as sported by the younger girls in my office... Confused

miss, loads and memyself, thanks, some good leads there

the No7 skin illuminator I linked to below is a liquid one - I find it really easy to blend subtly after I've done foundations etc and if I want a more all over dewy look I add a blob to my foundation and mix it in.

SesameSparkle · 05/07/2017 12:56

sweet Thanks, the no7 looks great but I see it only comes in a generic 'nude' or 'bronze'. I'm wondering if the light colour would be too pale/peachy for me. Does anyone offer more choice of shades? Or would I still get right results with a generic one-for-all colour?

MUR (make up revolution) at Superdrug do a brilliant range of highlighters for about £4 each.
