What to wear for dinner in Milan

I'm off to Milan for a weekend soon and I'm not too sure what to take to wear out for dinner. Has anyone been and able to say how smart places are?

Nowadays I'm usually a casual-ish dress and flats kind of girl, but wondering whether I should be glamming it up with more of a cocktail dress and heels. I would definitely take the excuse to get properly dressed up if I won't look out of place.

Also wondering whether the streets are heel friendly or full of cobbles. In my head it's a concrete city so heel safe but no idea what I'm basing that on!

Any insights welcome!

It completely depends on what restaurant you're going to. If it's a pizzeria wear your casual clothes!

However I once sat next to a woman in a pizzeria that was wearing fur when she walked in so go figure. If you do get glamed up prepared for most women to look you up and down, more than once, to assess your outfit!

As for the streets, there's a mix. Where are you staying? Close to the city centre is cobbled but the footpaths tend not to be.

It depends on if you're in a touristy area or not. Tourists tend to be casual, but expect Italian women to go all out for even a cafe/restaurant.

Thanks for the responses. I'm staying in Navigli, which I think is good for bars but not so sure about restaurants. My friend is sorting the restaurants, I expect she'll go for relatively fancy.

Maybe I just shop when I'm there and wear whatever I buy?!

Italian women tend to go 'hard glamour' more than English ones do, i always feel very frumpy in the same clothes I'd feel totally normal in in England . Can't imagine an Italian woman (huge generalisation i know, but) in Cath Kidston for example. But i am too old and lazy to care much :) if it bothers you to stand out, over-dress, in the direction of expensive rock star (tight jeans, bit of leather, heels, designery sunglasses) maybe Desigual too. (I have 10 + years and 3 dress sizes of experience trying to look good in Italy :D)
If you are over 50, just kill the nearest hairy beast and wear its pelt. :)

over-dress, in the direction of expensive rock star such a perfect summary!

I've been there a few times for work. Been to a fancy restaurant or two. For the fancier one I went tight black dress but with very nice leather jacket, dark eye make up etc.
