Which means they will start testing their products on animals again.

Though it's far from the only company doing this.

Disappointing another cosmetics brand I won't be using.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 01/07/2017 08:39

I sent them an email outlining my feelings on this and they sent me back the most amazing example of double speak I've ever encountered. Apparently, it isn't their fault that China requires animal testing and they won't actually be carrying out the testing themselves, so it's unreasonable to hold them accountable for what the Chinese government demand.

Sort of a 'big boy did it and ran away' defence of their actions. I'm amazed they dot as far as they did with that kind of PR.

Unexpectedbaby · 01/07/2017 09:09

I know it doesn't change the fact that a company has taken the decision to do so, but unless you are in China the cosmetics you are buying will not be tested on animals.

The Chinese market requires testing that they carry out themselves. The products are also made in different factories.

I suppose it's a case of company morals and that is the choice of the consumer as to wether they rule out a brand due to morals or the products they are actually applying to them self.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/07/2017 11:09

Well that's a brand never getting my cash again.

Thank you for telling us.

ZaraW · 01/07/2017 11:12

It doesn't matter that they "only" test in China they are still testing their products on animals so are not cruelty free.

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/07/2017 11:15

I find it madness that it is so hard to buy cruelty free cosmetics.

ihatethecold · 01/07/2017 11:17

Illamasqua is cruelty free.

Auspiciouspanda · 01/07/2017 11:22

On the other hand stila and smashbox have decided to stop selling in China so have regained their cruelty free status.

If your against animal testing it doesn't matter if the products you buy in the UK aren't tested on animals the money you spend contributes to animal testing.

poppym12 · 01/07/2017 11:45

I don't buy Nars anyway as they're owned by Shiseido who have never been cruelty free. Very disappointing that a company has made the decision to test on animals for the monetary gain of selling in China. Fortunately, there are now more certified cruelty free brands available so hopefully people will find alternatives to Nars products easily.

Groupie123 · 01/07/2017 16:37

It's the Chinese product that has to be tested by animals. The other products in other countries won't.

mintbiscuit · 01/07/2017 16:46

It's the Chinese product that has to be tested by animals. The other products in other countries won't.

Not sure I understand your point. Ultimately Nars will still be a brand that tests on animals. Doesn't matter where in the world that takes place, you will still be funding it if you purchase Nars.

cardoon · 01/07/2017 16:56

Not sure why that makes it OK Groupie

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 01/07/2017 17:30

It's the Chinese product that has to be tested by animals. The other products in other countries won't.

The specific item a customer buys will never have been tested on an animal but it would take a fair bit of cognitive dissonance to makes all the ones of the same product and brand that have, acceptable.

Unexpectedbaby · 01/07/2017 17:35

I think the point that groupie is making, like mine, is that NARS do not actually carry out the testing.

Also the parent company doesn't actually have that much to do with it. Shiseido also own Bare Minerals, who will never test on animals and are, in fact a very different company to Shiseido.

Groupie123 · 01/07/2017 17:35

It makes it 'ok' to me because I'll never buy from the Chinese company. All cosmetic companies that sell in China have to test on animals - my guess is they entered the market because women were using dangerous fake products & so they needed to protect the brand - but the products they sell elsewhere won't be.

Groupie123 · 01/07/2017 17:36

Also it's not Nars that will test on animals it will he a Chinese outsourced company.

Groupie123 · 01/07/2017 17:38

Pretty much all products have some component or process made in China nowadays whether you see it on the packaging or not. It makes no sense to boycott companies that sell to China and implied a certain cultural imperialism - rather than that why not get involved with organisations in china which aim to do away with animal testing? Oh right that's too hard for you all. Hmm

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/07/2017 17:49

Well that escalated quickly.

Ktown · 01/07/2017 18:14

This topic has gone out of fashion.
When I was a child it was a massive no no to use animal tested products (except drugs, as you cannot take one which hasn't been tested), now no one seems to mind. What changed?

poppym12 · 01/07/2017 18:43

I'm not giving my cash to a company that plays any part in animal testing, regardless of who actually carries the tests out or whether it be for one particular brand/subsidiary in a small part of the world. I like to be informed about parent companies and their stances on testing so that I can ensure I am not contributing to their profits in any way at any point along their chain.

Groupie123 · 01/07/2017 18:58

www.peta.org.uk/blog/animal-testing-in-china-an-update/

Read that. China is changing but there is still a lot to do. Rather than a boycott Chinese companies need people to support orgs like Peta to educate.

glitterglitters · 01/07/2017 19:12

Oh boo NARS. Boo Sad

ZaraW · 01/07/2017 19:22

That link is four years old... Anyway I don't agree with you. You can keep posting all you like but it won't change my opinion.

poppym12 · 01/07/2017 21:15

I'm afraid Peta aren't my preferred source of information as I doubt their credibility.

You can use whichever products you like groupie123 and justify it to yourself with whatever reasoning you choose.

However, many people do not want to add to the coffers of any company who support animal cruelty for profit and this post was to notify others that Nars are no longer cruelty free. This gives people the heads up to switch to a cruelty free brand if they prefer.

Yes, China is supposedly changing but it's not changed yet has it so right now animals are being subjected to product testing.
