How much do you tip at hair and beauty appointments?

I've been having this discussion with some friends and we all vary loads. What do you tip for a cut and blow dry, costing around £40.
And something like an eyebrow wax/ pedicure £20/£30?

I don't tip, I pay about £80 every 4-6 weeks. It's not that I don't think they deserve a tip, I just find the process very awkward.

EnidButton · 30/06/2017 17:53

I used to tip my fabulous hairdresser a fiver on top of the £80 it cost. At my last hair appointment somewhere new (she moved away) I tipped them £5 on top of £100, smiled and said thank you and then went home and cried because they cut far too much off. Blush

So balls to tipping imo. It's awkward, full of ways to get it wrong and something we shouldn't encourage unless it's in a restaurant or cafe.

Graceflorrick · 30/06/2017 17:57

£5-10 depending on how much I like it Blush

Blondielongie · 30/06/2017 18:10

I tip about 20%. I go about 3 time a year and it costs £45. I get free fringe trims and give £5 each time. I hand the £5 to them when they sit me down so it's out of the way.

I've always worked jobs that involve tipping which is why I do it.

Most of my friends don't tip though. Personal choice. It's not the law.

Blondielongie · 30/06/2017 18:11

Just to add. If I wasn't happy, I absolutely wouldn't tip.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 30/06/2017 18:13

About 25 pounds all in on a bill of about 170 pounds every 4 weeks to the day. I pay at the desk and tell the receptionist who gets what.

lanbro · 30/06/2017 18:20

Nails for £20, tip £5
Hair for £30, tip £5!

I own a business where we receive tips, ranges from anything between 10-50%, always very gratefully received by the staff

Deux · 30/06/2017 18:27

10% to stylist and 10% to colourist and £1 to the junior who washes.

Eyebrows are £6 for threading and I leave £1.

I'm in the South East if that's relevant.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 30/06/2017 18:28

I don't.

LandofTute · 30/06/2017 18:29

I don't have beauty appointments but pay 20% tip for hair.

LockedOutOfMN · 30/06/2017 20:12

Hair appointment is 100€ and I leave 30€ tip. They are amazing and I'm always so happy with the service. They stay open late for customers and will always fit me in at the last minute. I go every two months.

I don't have any other beauty treatments regularly but if I did I would tip if happy with the service.

putdownyourphone · 30/06/2017 20:17

It would be good if a hairdresser/beautician could say whether or not they expect to be tipped on this thread - I always wonder if they bitch about customers that don't tip.

I always did 10% until my hair cuts became extremely expensive (100 for colour, 50 for cut) and I thought well I'm actually paying you more than I can afford, on mat leave I wasn't earning anything but still paying them. So stopped tipping all together.

alicebiscuits · 30/06/2017 20:35

No tipping, maybe at Xmas or if it was a special complete restyle or something where they went out of their way in which case £5

KatyS36 · 30/06/2017 20:35

The salon where I go, same hairdresser about 10 years got taken over. Prices went up 25‰ overnight. I stopped tipping at that point!

Don't tip beautician but she gets a bottle of something nice at Christmas.

BettyOBarley · 30/06/2017 20:40

My cut & blow-dry is £27.50 so I round it up to £30

thismeansnothing · 30/06/2017 20:48

At just over £100 every ten weeks I don't tip them.

I do get the team a gift at Xmas which they really appreciated.

ShatnersBassoon · 30/06/2017 20:49

I don't tip my hairdresser. I don't tip my car mechanic either, who I imagine earns roughly the same amount.

KourtneyKardashian · 30/06/2017 21:43

I take my beautician a Starbucks. She's always so busy fitting clients in so she doesn't let them down, I think it's always well received.

polyhymnia · 01/07/2017 00:18

About 10%.

WithCheesePlease · 01/07/2017 00:39

I always tip in hairdressers and beauty salon if I'm happy with the result.

Having friends and family in both industries I know they are generally on very bad wages (often minimum wage), and they rely on tips to make up the difference.

I don't feel that the fact that "it costs enough" has anything to do with it. For me it's the exact same as leaving a tip in a restaurant for good service.

CherylVole · 01/07/2017 08:43

never tip for anything

DailyFailstinks · 01/07/2017 09:01

I don't tip my hairdresser as she owns the salon and I'm paying £120+ every few weeks. I do always give the juniors a couple of quid and take in a box of chocolates for everyone at Christmas, Easter, etc.

crazypenguinlady · 01/07/2017 09:08

I don't tip my hairdresser (the only one I like doing my hair is the owner) and don't get any beauty treatments done. I do find it odd when people tip hairdressers/beauticians etc but not nurses, fire fighters and so forth .

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/07/2017 09:11

My hair is £48 every 8 weeks. I don't tip but at Xmas I put £30 in with her Xmas card.

I don't tip when I get my eyebrows done.

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 01/07/2017 09:27

I don't tip anything to beautician/nail technicians.

I tip £5 at my hairdressers. It's usually 2 different people who do my hair - one who applies the colour and a stylist who cuts and blow drys it so if you split it out £2.50 each does seem a bit scabby but I go every 7 weeks and at £100 a pop I can't really afford to tip anymore than that.
