Babyliss Big Hair - for the love of God, help me.

I should start by saying I can barely use a hairdryer, and certainly am no great shakes at blowdrying with it.

A new Babyliss Big Hair arrived this morning. I have watched a couple of youtube videos and tried to give it a go. I CANNOT get the hang of it! My hair ends up wound around the spinny thing far too quickly and I can't pull it out at the right kind of pace!

And for heaven's sake, how on earth do you section your own hair at the back?!

On the upside, I DO have bouncy roots now.

I've noticed that it can make the hair quite static - could that be what's going wrong wonderment?

@hollygolipo i've pm'd you!

KatoPotato · 27/06/2017 14:38

If I get sent a new one from the BBH haters I'll film a video and share a link!

blueskyinmarch · 27/06/2017 14:43

I adore mine. I use it on the fast setting and keep it turning but i sort of pull away from roots as i go, using the other hand to sort of control it/smooth it on top. Don’t just passively let it twirl away in your hair or it will all tangle up.

reuset · 27/06/2017 14:46

There's always someone who gives one away on these BBH threads Grin

Blodplod · 27/06/2017 17:03

Second what blueskyinmarch said.. I roll my hair up in the brush and keep going at the same section, rolling and unrolling and pulling it out, then hold it tight it at the top just not rolling the barrel letting the heat dry the hair. Similar to how a hairdresser would use a hairdryer and round brush. It's worth the effort. If it doesn't rain I have as good as a salon blow dry for 3-4 days (my hair doesn't get greasy until about day 5!). You can't just hold it and roll it (as blue said, passively). It can't work miracles by itself and is obviously just a replacement for the brush and hairdryer method. Those that say it's rubbish, I hate to say it, but my first thought is you're not using it properly (sorry!). I read the instruction book and watched some YouTube videos.. incidentally I don't, like so many others leave it until my hair is 80-90% dry. I towel dry my hair and go straight it when quite wet with the Big Hair and start at the bottom layers and work up just like the hair dresser does. I've got very thick curly/wavy hair and it's always been fantastic since I discovered this great gadget. Mousse and serum work best for me. I use awapuhi (sp?).

Blodplod · 27/06/2017 17:29

My advice would be to go to the hairdressers for a blow dry, get hairdressers to blow dry it straight (ish) with a round brush, see how they do it by means of rolling and pulling the hair straight and try to emulate that with the big hair. I like my hair smooth and glossy but not poker straight like you get with straightening irons, this is what the big hair is trying to achieve.

Blodplod · 27/06/2017 17:45

Sorry, one more thing (then I'll shut up!), I use mousse and serum mixed together in my hand first before applying to wet hair. So, good blob of mousse, then couple of squirts of serum, mix together in hands and apply to hair. Gives you the smoothing magic of serum and controlling magic of mousse without hair feeling full of product..

At this rate I'm thinking of doing my own video tomorrow morning and posting it here for the BBH haters! Grin

If your hair is already smooth, sleek and glossy - do you even need to be using it?

It was slightly tongue in cheek. Let's just say it's better before BBH than after it, which I gather is not the intended result.

Blodplod · 27/06/2017 19:28

Wonderment, I do think that maybe it doesn't suit every hair type? What is your hair like to begin with? I'm wondering if people's hair is fine, then maybe this gadget not right? Creates too much static and fine flyaway hair maybe? I do think it suits thick curly hair to be honest.. but I can only go by my hair.

TheBitterBoy · 27/06/2017 19:34

I use VO5 Smoothly does it frizz free creme on my damp hair, blow dry to 80% dry, then use the big hair as described by Blodplod above. Smooth and glossy, with a bit of bounce at the ends every time. I use the cooler slower setting too. The VO5 creme is the only thing I've found to sort the frizzies without leaving my hair greasy after day 2.

reuset · 27/06/2017 21:25

I have naturally wavy hair so I use it for smooth, sleek and bouncy. Sounds like you already have smooth and sleek, wonderment! Envy

I have a chin length bob and am world's most inept hair stylist. I got the smaller barreled model and I love it! Sides stayed turned under all day now and just looks so much neater. Worth persevering I reckon. Agree with others dry with a normal hairdryer first and take smaller sections.

SukiTheDog · 28/06/2017 09:33

Gave mine away. I really tried but the effort wasn't worth the final effect. Just couldn't be bothered 😕
