Its going to be 40 degrees and humid. We are going to want to sight-see a bit.

What to wear? I don't 'do' shorts.

What sort of shoes?

I'm in a panic!

Cotton knee length dress and sandals.

White linen trousers sound like a recipe for disaster. I always feel grubby in the city at the best of times, and linen creases like a bugger too, before you throw white into the equation.

Cotton sundresses is what I'd try to go for, with comfortable sandals. A cropped cotton cardigan to slip on in air con, or if I was worried about my shoulders burning.

The hotter it gets, the more I cover up: Widish leg cotton trousers (linen gets too saggy unless it's great quality) and either a cotton or linen long sleeved shirt and panama hat. Think Quentin Crisp but without the cravat.

My feet burn too so no sandals for me. I normally buy a couple of pairs of cheap plimsolls, wear them to death and ditch them when I get home.

@DownHere.

Fabulous City. Hope you enjoy!

I throw my vote in with Floisme that the hotter it gets the more covered up you need to be, but with filmy soft fabrics. You don't want acres of exposed flesh, and you will tan gently through fabric. One of my most useful hot weather buys ever (technically a birthday present from DH) was a bias cut linen turquoise tie dye dress with shortish sleeves. It blows and drapes, and on holiday it goes to the beach and to posh restaurants in the evening. It came from a one shop place in the south of France. The owner sent us off for coffee while he rehemmed it for my proportions, and it was finished 30 minutes later. It goes everywhere with me when it's warm, and it saves taking a nightie too.

Teva sandals are brilliant, and indestructible - you can put them in the washing machine. Some models are really ugly, but there are a couple that are nicer. I prefer them to Birkis because they have cushioning and I tend to walk a long way.

Would you be able to link some if that's not too much bother lanouvelle? I think I need cushioning . . .
