Would you rather look 'cool' or 'expensive'

I've followed the cool thread and the many expensive/groomed threads with interest and come to the conclusion that I'd rather be thought of as cool although as a dumpy curvy middle-aged mum, sadly either is unlikely .

Which would you prefer and why?

I just don't have 'expensive' features, no matter what I wear, so 'cool' is the only option for me, but I usually look either boring or eccentric Grin

IJustLostTheGame · 17/06/2017 08:44

I have mega norks.
I cannot look either.Sad
My choices are frump, rectangle, 50s throwback wannabe or aging porn star.

I do have some lovely clothes, ones that fit and 'hide' me a bit. But I choose clothes that will fit rather than whether I like them if you see what I mean.

HopefulMog · 17/06/2017 09:37

cool

FatGirlWithChocolate · 17/06/2017 10:34

I'd like to be cool. I suspect that I look "different". Which can mean whatever an observer wants it to mean. I have been told that you can tell I'm artistic (I am) by my dress. This may not be a compliment :)

n0ne · 17/06/2017 10:46

Cool, definitely! It's very rare that I'd want to look expensive - only if I'm at a posh restaurant/hotel/event.

Maudlinmaud · 17/06/2017 10:51

Expensive. I'm not cool and would hurt myself trying. That's not to say I do look expensive. I have a classic style but don't spend mega bucks to achieve it.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 17/06/2017 10:55

I'd rather look classy yes I know that wasn't an option but literally cannot pull it off. My sister manages to make anything look expensive and can throw and outfit together in seconds and look excellent. I could spend hours and still look like a sack of spuds 🙄

squoosh · 17/06/2017 10:57

A lot of people on that thread seem to be describing that Parisian look as seen on Charlotte Gainsbourg and Emmanuelle Alt. This is a cool look but it's also an expensive look.

BusterGonad · 17/06/2017 11:20

I think I'd rather look cool, expensive is nice but I'm not one for flashing labels, I'm not saying all expensive people do but I've never really fancied a posh handbag or watch, the stuff I always want is quirky and not everyone's cup of tea so I'd rather look cool.

hollieberrie · 17/06/2017 11:50

I'd rather look cool and I think sometimes I achieve it buuuut I dont have a cool personality so the illusion is ruined as soon as people start talking to me! Grin

MumBod · 17/06/2017 11:51

See, I just had a customer that was a different sort of cool altogether.

Tall, slim, long ginger hair, tanned, simple denim shirtdress and white birkies.

She looked absolutely brilliant - calm, serene and as cool as a cucumber, while not being edgy at all.

I went all flustered serving her and instantly felt like a ridiculous heffalump Blush

UsernameInvalid66 · 17/06/2017 12:00

Cool.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 17/06/2017 12:02

I go for cool, I achieve it about one day a earHmm

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 17/06/2017 12:03

Year. Fgs.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 17/06/2017 12:04

Cool, not that I'm either Sad

Cantseethewoods · 17/06/2017 12:04

cool. You get to wear comfortable shoes :-)

boldlygoingsomewhere · 17/06/2017 12:04

I'd much rather look cool - my hair doesn't look expensive no matter what I try! I don't really suit black though so have to go for dark grey for a slightly rock/grunge look.

Kursk · 17/06/2017 12:06

Neither for me, clothing for me is something that should be practical, warm and hard wearing.

BeeFarseer · 17/06/2017 12:09

I'm a rock chick/gothy/punky sort, that is aging into a hippy, bohemian sort. This is what I tell myself.

In reality, I look eccentric and like I've got dressed in the dark. I haven't a hope in hell of looking expensive, so I'd go for cool.

Hairq · 17/06/2017 13:26

I am the same as justlosthegame - big boobs so can either look
Like an ageing pin up girl, a strumpet or a frump. It's shit.

RickOShay · 17/06/2017 15:16

I would love to be cool. But I am not. Wouldn't want to look expensive. I am a cross between hippy and classic. I think, it's hard to analyse your own style.

Girlywurly · 17/06/2017 15:22

Expensive. Not because I think it's inherently better, but because it's a better fit for my personality. I just tend to be more drawn to things that are classic/conservative/traditional, etc.

WesternMeadowlark · 17/06/2017 15:55

Cool.

But mainly because I'm very upset by anyone thinking I've had an easier life than I have, and looking expensive often results in people assuming you've had a comparatively easy time. I don't think it's right, but it's what seems to happen.

I do like expensive looks, they'd just misrepresent me.

I think looking cool is about having a certain physical grace and slight slowness and confidence of movement, all of which needs strong muscles and a relaxed state of mind, both of which I'd like very much to have!

rightknockered · 17/06/2017 16:34

I'd have to choose cool. My hair is naturally wavy and messy, never pristine. I can't stand -too lazy- to look ironed and neat.
I'm pretty certain my frazzled single parent of three autistic children image, complete with permanently attached sunglasses must be cool, right?
