First every long haul flight coming up - what do I need?

SirRaymondClench · 16/06/2017 12:32

Forever I've read about beauty routines for onboard a long haul flight but it's never applied to me as I've never flown further than Europe...
However in a few weeks I am off to New York (woohoo!) which is about as long haul as I get! Grin

So what would you reccommend for onboard? What do you do skin wise etc onboard? Any other tips?

I take makeup off with wipes. Then put on a serum and moisturiser. Eye cream and lip balm. I try to remember to drink lots of water.

Comfy warm socks. A scarf or wrap.

MadisonAvenue · 16/06/2017 12:45

Drink lots of water, buy a large bottle from Boots after you've been through security. Moisturiser and lip balm are a must.

Wear something comfortable, and if you've got a night flight for the return journey have something warm to wear. I always feel cold.

Oh, and anticipate the queue for the toilets just before landing by going and freshening up in there and hour before you're due to arrive.

MadisonAvenue · 16/06/2017 12:45

*an hour, not and

Leviticus · 16/06/2017 12:49

I'd probably forgo makeup and wear night cream and lip balm. I was lucky to find a tester bottle of Advanced Night Repair in duty free once so and was able to apply a little half a bottle before my flight. And yes to a scarf or blanket and an eye mask to try to sleep.

bakewelltarte · 16/06/2017 15:36

I always watch this Lisa Eldridge video before long haul flights and generally follow her routine:

It helps pass the time too!

BusterGonad · 16/06/2017 16:43

I just take a mini tub of Nivea or Astral, always a lip balm, I wear leggings/jeggings under a slouchy jumper. I always wear trainers and take some spare socks just in case! I also always take a spare jumper, flights are either too bloody hot or freezing!

DandelionAndBedrock · 16/06/2017 16:48

I take a fizzy vitamin C tablet (normally the whole tube because I forget and end up buying them in duty free boots) - take at the start of the flight if you are landing at night, end of the flight if landing daytime.

ImperialBlether · 16/06/2017 16:53

What does the Vit C tablet do?

Iamastonished · 16/06/2017 16:55

As above, plus eye drops. I find that flying dries my eyes out.

DandelionAndBedrock · 16/06/2017 17:06

No idea about the science behind it but I find it makes me much more awake, I feel more able to fight off plane germs, it brightens my skin... I haven't seen research into this, just my experience. Also if you dissolve the tablet in a bottle of water then you get a boost to general hydration levels.

babyturtles · 16/06/2017 17:08

I don't do anything, fly all the time.

WindwardCircle · 16/06/2017 17:18

Not as much as you might think, in fact most of what I take I carry as a rule anyway (tissues, lip balm, headphones, iPad and so on). I had the misfortune to fly right after a security alert once and we were only allowed to take on the plane the absolute minimum (literally all I had was travel documents, wallet, tissues and a book) , and it made me realise that all you don't really need much.

expatinscotland · 16/06/2017 17:31

Get a prescription for diazepam. Take one about 40 minutes before boarding. Sleep the whole time.

Jammygal · 16/06/2017 21:59

For me it has to be anti bac wipes for the tray , screen etc, headphones, water bottle, Emma hardie balm which I slather on after face cleansing wipes, handcream, lip balm and a hoodie!
Saying that last time I flew to Oz I wasn't allowed any liquids or gels so had to get on without any of my usual skin treats! I survived by plastering on some full on moisturising masks in duty free!

Iamastonished · 16/06/2017 22:04

"For me it has to be anti bac wipes for the tray , screen etc, headphones, water bottle,"

Why? I never anti bac wipe everything, and I'm still here. Do you usually have a problem with stuff like this?

sparechange · 16/06/2017 22:09

Wear some comfy clothes.
If you are prone to getting puffy, take off your rings and put them somewhere safe

Dont wear make up, and just before you board, slather yourself in a really expensive cream from duty free (I go for Creme de la mer or one of the Lancôme ones)
Take a lip balm (I tuck mine in my bra so it is easy to get to if I fall asleep)

Drink water but not so much that you're up and down to the loo for the whole flight

But it's only 7 hours. You're not going to be able to do much damage to your skin in that time!

BubblesBuddy · 16/06/2017 22:13

Take off your rings??? Just no! A small tube of moisturiser is good, a book, reading glasses if you need them, passport, boarding pass and passport. Toothbrush and tiny toothpaste. Tiny deodorant. You myst get these through security! Keep valuables with you and this is only a 7 hour flight. A couple of films and you are there!

sparechange · 16/06/2017 22:17

bubbles
I have to take my rings off when I fly. My fingers get really puffy!
It is far easier to take them off before I board and put them somewhere safe than to wake up mid-flight and then try and stash them somewhere

sparechange · 16/06/2017 22:18

And you don't need to take a toothbrush and toothpaste. You'll be given all that on board in the washbags they hand out at the start of the flight. Some airlines put a lip balm in as well

ememem84 · 16/06/2017 22:23

sparechange I always take toothbrush and paste. I've only been given them when I've flown business.

But stay hydrated, make up off. Comfy clothes.take a spare pir of socks.

My other trick is to put hoody on hood up neck pillow on around already up hood. And eye mask over hood. Keeps everything in place.

CMOTDibbler · 16/06/2017 22:23

Hah! Only if you fly in business sparechange! These days you are lucky if they throw some earphones at you in economy, let alone anything else. I've flown BA, AA, United and Delta to the US this year so far.

OP, just take off any makeup, put night cream and eye cream on, don't drink alcohol, comfy socks, nothing tight round your middle and you'll be fine. A colleague swears by support socks and a pair of slippers on the plane, but I can't be doing with the faff

EUnamechange · 16/06/2017 22:24

I fly frequently for work.

  • Kindle/book
  • Earphones
  • Earplugs
  • Laptop / tablet (unless travelling via one of the new restricted countries)
  • Lipbalm
  • Hand sanitiser
  • A large pashmina shawl I use as a blanket, pillow, to keep warm, cushion for arse for landings...

Depending on class of travel you should get toothpaste and brush as a minimum, eye mask too quite possible.

But the most important of all is a saline spray or Vick's First Defence, to shove up your nose, and avoid catching unpleasant germs.

Iamastonished · 16/06/2017 22:27

"Depending on class of travel you should get toothpaste and brush as a minimum, eye mask too quite possible."

Not in pleb class.

sparechange · 16/06/2017 22:31

BA and Virgin sill give you a toothbrush in economy!

ijustwannadance · 16/06/2017 22:36

Paracetamol or similar. I always get a headache on long flights.
