Do you still wear old clothes?

And by that I don't mean "vintage" or "retro chic", I mean actually old 😂. This probably shouldn't be in the style section but I don't think there's an 'anti-style' section 😒

Often people will say to me "oh I love your top/jeans/jacket', and I'm like 'oh I've had this a while'. In reality I had my favorite pair of jeans for almost 20 years until the arse was literally hanging out of them, but torn arses came back into fashion so that was ok 😂

I have belts that I've worn for 15/20 years and can still see the worn notches of where they fit one time, back in the day 😮

I've lots of tops (just basic ones) that are at least 10 years old, and don't get me started on pyjamas!

Does anyone else hang onto clothes for a really long time (and of course add to your wardrobe with newer pieces as you go along)? Or would you never keep anything longer than say a year or two?

Do people really just keep clothe for a year or two?!

InigoTaran · 15/06/2017 00:00

I do! If I find stuff I like I tend to keep it, definitely still got stuff that's ten years old or more. Some stuff has even come back into fashion...Smile

Magickl · 15/06/2017 00:01

I used to be able to afford better quality clothes, so ten years on I still wear some of my old pieces occasionally . Luckily I haven't changed size and I favour style rather than fashion.

megletthesecond · 15/06/2017 00:04

Yes. My smart trench coat is 17 yrs old and still wear it to work in warmer months.

I've been the same size for over 20yrs so don't really clear out clothes unless they're raggy or a rare mistake. I have two wardrobes..

WithCheesePlease · 15/06/2017 00:08

Do people really just keep clothe for a year or two?! Yeah 2 of my very close friends are both into fashion (and earn a fair bit of money), and I rarely see them in the same thing more than a few times. I'm often embarrassed to say how long I've had stuff, but if I really like it and it's still in good enough condition I keep it. I just don't know what they do with all their clothes (maybe charity shops)

I have a jacket that pre-dates my 15 yr olds Grin also a raincoat that was given to me by an aunt. I have no idea how old that is. I do wear some things for years. I have bought a few new things over the last couple of years though. My footwear doesn't last so long.

Monstrous bunions.

And yes, some people do only keep clothes for a year or two. I have a rellie who donates her entire warbrode twice a year in order to make space for the new clothes, and the shoes to go with them of course.

KanyesLunchbox · 15/06/2017 00:43

I recently threw out a T-shirt that was 20 years old Blush I remember the day I bought it. It had gone from very favourite to slobby day to PJs to rag. I wear my clothes a long time too. It's eco-friendly Smile

Caterpillar my super stylish sil throws out almost her entire wardrobe about twice a year. It makes me wince.

mammyoftwo · 15/06/2017 01:51

still wearing clothes frm 20 years ago

silentpool · 15/06/2017 02:07

Clothes that get tatty get downgraded from going out status to round the house wear. When they get really bad, they get used as rags or donated for recycling.

I've also been living in hot climates for the last decade or so. Some of my winter clothes have not needed to be replaced in that time as they get about 2 weeks use a year.

shinny · 15/06/2017 03:39

I still own the PJs I was wearing when I went into labour with my oldest child so that's over 16 years old! Plus I have a Primark top that is a similar age and still looks great.

I have a pair of silver slip on shoes (think star trek) that I bought 20 years ago when I had PMT. oops.

IrrationalAboutPie · 15/06/2017 05:54

Yes, I still have some clothes I bought when I started a new school 23 years ago Shock

I try to force myself to buy a couple of t-shirt/tops in the sales every year in an attempt to have some vaguely up to date clothes. Else its a strict replace when worn out routine here. I did have a flash of extravagance earlier this year and bought a dress for no apparent reason. I don't have the money to justify buying new clothes regularly.

I should probably join you in an Anti-Style section Grin

BusterGonad · 15/06/2017 06:00

I don't purely for the fact my style has completely changed and I'm far more confident then I was 8 years ago. I've obviously got a few things but the majority are kind of New. With saying that I do keep my shoes and boots for years.

Floisme · 15/06/2017 07:13

God yes, one of the things that makes me cross about Style and Beauty is the 'get rid if you haven't worn it for a year' mentality.

I get rid of clothes that are trashed or that don't suit or fit me any more but if they're just dated or if I'm bored with them I put them away and recycle. You do need space for a very big cupboard, I admit that.

A lot of my clothes are way older than the stuff they try and pass off as vintage. Today I'm wearing some skinny cotton trousers from M&S that date from the previous time skinnies were in fashion. (Remember St Michael?) I prefer them to modern skinnies because they're less lycra'd. I've just revived a couple of pairs of widelegs and my favourite summer trousers are the ones I wore for jujitsu in the 80s.

I have vintage clothes too i.e. 20s-60s.

I will join you in Anti-style Smile

CountryCaterpillar · 15/06/2017 07:19

I didn't think not throwing your clorra away every 6 months made you anti style?!

I'm amazed people do that (I don't think anyone in my circle does. The more fashion conscious perhaps adding a few things each season.) People would buy new white shirts/jeans/ skirts just because their own are last years?!

Sometimes you buy something and quickly realise it was a mistake. I understand that. It's getting rid simply because you haven't worn it for a while that gets me (other than lack of space). We all know fashion designers have the memory of a goldfish and these days, they don't even bother to tweak things when they bring them back.

BusterGonad · 15/06/2017 07:33

Hi Banana before I had my son I was starting to get a bit more confident but now I'll wear whatever takes my fancy, more or less, if it suits my figure and is pretty then I'll wear it. I used to live in jeans and Gap t shirts but now that would bore me to death. My wardrobe is 80% dresses, and I smile just thinking about how beautiful some are! They are not £££ but they do make me very happy!

NomDePlumeReloaded · 15/06/2017 07:44

From the last 10yrs, at least. The main body of my wardrobe is probably 3-5 years old.

I add a few new things every year and yet rid of a few old things, but often hold on to the oldest items. Sometimes it's because they are well made, sometimes it's because they have a significant memory attached, sometimes it's because I still regularly wear them.

AuldAlliance · 15/06/2017 07:51

I do. I regularly wear clothes that are 10-15 years old. They are often better made, and in better quality fabrics, than my more recent ones, though they cost far less. And current fashions don't suit my body shape, so I just ignore them.
I don't think it's anti-style, I think it's more anti-fashion/anti-trend.

Oblomov17 · 15/06/2017 07:51

I thought this was the norm. Not the replacing whole wardrobe twice a year. My cheap brown leather coat is still my fave and dh bought it for me when I first met him more than 15 years ago.

2pandasandapig · 15/06/2017 08:04

I've got a t shirt that was my dads until he grew out of it Grin and I love to wear it, it's in no way stylish, vintage or retro but it is the best part of 40 yrs old- a bit faded but no holes and looks perfectly fine as t shirts go!

Lexilooo · 15/06/2017 08:41

I'm still wearing one of my school uniform jumpers from year 9 or 10 😶 I'm 38 😶

It isn't an isolated incident.

I only throw clothes away if they are worn out and can't be mended or altered. If it goes out of fashion put it away until it comes back. Then it is vintage. I have had some gorgeous vintage items to wear that were just kept by family because they still had wear left.

donajimena · 15/06/2017 08:47

Some of my knickers are over 14 years old. Blush they don't make them like they used to!
But yes I do wear things for a long time. I don't buy fast fashion things like peplum tops and this years cold shoulder tops. I go for classic items that don't date.

WithCheesePlease · 15/06/2017 08:55

Great to hear I'm not the only one! Smile

plaintomatopasta · 15/06/2017 08:56

I keep stuff for years! I'm not growing anymore so if it still holds together I still wear it. I wear shoes till they are literally held by a thread with holes in and same with clothes. Like you say though all saints now sell tshirt s with rips and holes in so some of mine are about to bang on style again (when I was a student All Saints was cheap and I still have them!)
