New hairstyle has made old clothes style look strange on me :(

I had my long bob cut really short a couple of months ago (kind of the Jennifer Lawrence cut with more volume on top with short back and sides). I love the haircut and it suits my face but now my clothes look strange on me.

Dresses and skirts feel weird - partly because they are now too feminine, partly because the proportions now feel strange without longer hair to balance the volume of the skirt/dress.

Shirts worn with trousers easily feel too manly now - my hair still looks super feminine and I wear make up but something just looks... odd.

Many necklines look odd without my hair around my neck, too.

And finally some of my clothes now look really frumpy when they didn't before, while others look way too young and make me look about 15. (I'm 34.)

I basically have no idea what to wear now! The only thing that feels right is a stripy top with skinny jeans but I can't wear that combination every day.

Has anyone felt like this after a big haircut? Did you get used to it? It's been two months, I thought I would have adjusted to it by now. And I really do like my haircut, it's just my head now doesn't fit the rest of my body. (I'm a size 10/12 and about 5ft3, by the way.)

Yes, I know exactly how you feel. I had my long hair chopped off years ago (mid 90's, a la Natalie Imbruglia, that was what I wanted, didn't quite get it!). I felt all my skirts and dresses were just too girly. Luckily for me baggy combats were in fashion back then so I had to wear those most of the time until it grew! But it is something I would need to consider if I ever got the chop again.
Perhaps slightly changing your make up would help? Or if you like to wear a skirt, try a pencil skirt - I'm thinking Claire underwood manages to wear amazing dresses and has short hair, and looks really classy.

I've never experienced it with hair (mine has never grown long enough to warrant a drastic cut) but I had a similar thing when I last got some new specs. I really liked them but when I looked in the mirror, I felt dissatisfied. They looked good but they didn't look quite right.

In the end I decided it was because I was bored with my whole style. I'd been hoping new specs would provide a lift but they didn't go far enough and in fact just made the feeling worse.

So to cut a long story short, I'm in the middle of a bit of a style change. I've no idea if it's the same for you but just putting it out there.

I certainly don't think it's to do with hair and clothes not 'matching'. In fact I really like a bit of masculine-feminine contrast.

Floisme You're probably right about the not needing to match thing - just been looking at lots of outfit photos online and people are wearing a whole range of things with short hair.

It's probably more the proportion thing with no hair hanging around my neck and shoulders to balance things out.

I find summer clothes more difficult in general actually so maybe I'm just feeling lost in general.

Yeah it could be the proportions because you've effectively got a different silhouette and that's always harder to adjust to. Maybe you need something distinctive where your hair used to be - e.g. lipstick? interesting earrings or necklaces?? Or move the focus somewhere else entirely? Or try and work out what it is about the stripy top and jeans that looks so much better than everything else?

I agree about summer dressing, much prefer autumn/winter.

Maybe, some distinctive jewellery or earings to give a focus to your "bald" neck. I had this the last time I had my hair cut very short. It was a lovely cut, every hair falling into place but I just felt a bit exposed; a bit neat. I remember going a bit overboard with scarves til it'd grown a bit 😊

I don't know your style but I have a short bob and love slash neck tops with a statement necklace. ( I don't really wear print). I like quite architectural necklaces from Cos. I also like shirts with stiff collars that sit up a little. When my hair was longer these looks really lacked impact but now I've lobbed my hair off again they look really great. You need to find what is working about the stripey top and replicate that.

I know what you mean! I died my auburn a while ago and although everybody told me it was lovely, none of my colours looked right any more, realised I'd worn a lot of pink and reds and purples! I had to pull all the navy and grey things out and felt drab. They all looked awful with auburn hair. Back to fair hair again now.

Big earrings.
