"On trend" yet practical school bag for teenage girl

My 13 year old daughter is driving me insane trying to find 'The' bag for school. She doesn't want "Hype" , says "Kanken" is now on its way out and I've said the "Ted Baker" one she likes is unlikely to stand the test of time with sports kit and books being stuffed in. Any suggestions/recommendations? What's popular where you are for this age ?

My year 8 and 9 DDs reliably inform me the thing to have is now very much big bucket style handbags in black. My DD2 has somehow managed to wrest my Boden bag from me. It was quite expensive but I'd have to admit to a handbag weakness and I have too many tbh. I'd never have bought it for her originally but she was very happy to have it 'preloved'. Funnily enough it might even be cost effective as I got it in the sale and she has now had it since September and it's still in excellent condition whereas her previous purchase from Asos @ GBP30 fell apart in less than a term. My DD1 is not fashion conscious in any way and bucks the trend with a Twenty One Pilots backpack.

I think she'd like a rucksack style for days out etc but finding a suitable one is proving tricky.

She needs a fjallraven backpack. On trend round here anyway.

PossumInAPearTree · 10/06/2017 21:45

Oh sorry, that's the kanken one isn't it which I see has been deemed on its way out. We're in the shires here so maybe a bit behind the times. Grin

dementedpixie · 10/06/2017 21:46

Dd has used a kipling large backpack for the last 2 years. Its still in goid condition

LexieSinclair · 10/06/2017 21:48

In the school I work in all the girls in the lower years have hype or Superdry rucksacks and the older ones have big bucket type handbags.

Shesaysso · 10/06/2017 21:49

Superdry rucksacks in our school

itshappenedagain · 10/06/2017 21:50

Under armour are very popular here..loads of colours and very practical. Bought one for my cousin (12) a couple of months back as her mum told her they were too expensive! Hmm

jenthehen · 10/06/2017 22:06

Thanks everyone, I'll offer up the suggestions and see how they stack up : )

Our students in Upper school (y9-11) seem to love the big oversized handbags.

The thing that shocked me is how many of them are using Michael Kors ones. It's a bloody school bag! And not a week goes by when one of their MK bags has a strap/handle break.

Personally, I preferred it when rucksacks and/or messenger bags were the cool thing to have.

eatingtomuch · 10/06/2017 22:15

My DD has a Pink (Victoria Secrets) rucksack. It's got loads of pockets, really sturdy and plain black.

Chimchar · 10/06/2017 22:48

Vans backpacks are pretty popular here...
TKmaxx had some really funky Kipling ones in the other day...not sure if they're cool or not, but I liked them! Wink

Sgtmajormummy · 10/06/2017 22:59

DD is moving to secondary in September and she'll be getting an Eastpack backpack of her choice. They really do stand up to battering- her brother's has done 8 years with just a bit of surface cracking on the shoulder straps. A4 binder and daily books fit no problem and there are matching pencil cases, tablet sleeves, pump bags....

They are very canny about "last year's designs" though, so at about €40 we'll go for something neutral.

deuxmoulins · 10/06/2017 23:11

I've had an East Pak backpack for years, come in loads of colours and are really sturdy. No internal pockets but it's big enough anyway. I'm eyeing up a Kanken or a Herschel Retreat bag next.

PNGirl · 10/06/2017 23:47

I had an Eastpak backpack at uni. It came to London with me last weekend for a night and I'm 32!

Jane113 · 26/08/2018 18:18

why does it matter? it's a bag? why did it have to be popular??

DillyDilly · 26/08/2018 18:31

@Jane 112 why does it matter? it's a bag? why did it have to be popular??

Because for a lot of girls that age, they just want to be like everyone else/have the same as everyone else.

Fresta · 26/08/2018 19:00

My 13 year old has just got a Vans one- Superdry ones are like steel and last forever- wanted dd to get another one of these but she didn't want one again. We'll see if the Vans one lasts as long.

TantricTwist · 27/08/2018 01:03

My DD11 has requested and now has a bucket type handbag although I have the feeling she'll revert to her old backpack soon enough which was from TK Maxx.

I've told her she's not getting another bag as that's the one she requested so tough.

TantricTwist · 27/08/2018 01:05

My DD11 did originally request a Kanken but I point blank told her I flatly refuse to pay that much on a school bag for an 11 year old.

Kimasabi · 06/08/2019 11:17

My daughter is 15 and has used ted baker shopper bags and river island tote bags,we are in the north east and they seem to be the popular choice.
