Style these trousers for me!

Have just had a truly miserable experience with a personal shopper, trying to find an outfit for a posh dinner next week. I came away with the one thing that fitted and was in a colour that suited me - these trousers.

I have a cream fitted top that works with them, but what shoes? I'm thinking silver sandals with a bit of a heel, but not a very high one (I am a lot shorter than the model in these pictures, so the trousers are just below ankle length on me). If someone can find me a pair that I can order on line, I can get them in time for the dinner next weekend! TIA

Or if not silver sandals, what might work? I want to dress them up rather than down.

I think these must be the type of trousers which look better in person. Massive clown shoes maybe? Sorry Blush

TadlowDogIncident · 09/06/2017 21:23

They do, genuinely, look much better in reality than on the website: they're silky and drape nicely, and on me they're a sensible length. Please be nice, the personal shopper's already made me feel like shit for daring to waste her time with my imperfect body!

I think a fitted top (as you suggested) and silver dangles would look lovely. A fab necklace and get your nails and toes painted and you will feel a million dollars.

Sandals..

ephemeralfairy · 09/06/2017 21:48

I can absolutely imagine that those look good on. They've been styled appallingly though!

I think a delicate simple metallic sandle would look lovely. Nothing chunky. Open toe, nice pedicure. Gorgeous.

As for a top...if it was me I'd choose something in a plain pale colour...but I'd want it to be a bit structured or embellished in some way if you see what I mean?? Like beading or exaggerated shoulders to balance the floatiness...

I'm not explaining myself very well! But they are lovely 😊

SesameSparkle · 09/06/2017 21:55

A neutral fitted top is good, but the trousers are on the casual side so something that draws your eye upwards would look dressier - eg bare shoulders, something sparkley, a statement necklace or earrings. Silver sandals sound OK, and even flats would be okay with those trousers. There are pages of silver sandals on the dune site right now.

TadlowDogIncident · 09/06/2017 21:55

Thanks, ephemeralfairy. Yes, planning to get a manicure and pedicure before the dinner, and match my toenail colour to the trousers if I can. Any suggestions for where to get some suitable sandals?

The top I'm planning to wear is quite plain, but with slightly exaggerated sleeves - hard to describe, they're quite floaty but they stop just above the elbow, so I think they balance the trousers out quite well. I possibly need to find a suitable necklace: the top has a V-neck (essential as one of the features that annoyed the personal shopper is that I have boobs), so a silver pendant of some kind might work.

Will look at Dune, thanks.

I love them. You'll look amazing.
The t-shirt in the pic looks awful, I think you need a top tucked in, probably black and metallic heels as high as you can confidently walk in.

A1Sharon · 09/06/2017 22:39

That personal shopper is rubbish, OP. Don't dwell on it-they're supposed to dress every size/shape. She is obviously crap at her job.

BreezyBreeze · 09/06/2017 22:41

Yes I agree Sharon. Was coming back to say the same.

Floisme · 10/06/2017 10:22

I love them. Personally I'd keep everything else very simple: a fitted top (if I had the arms, it would be a vest top) and flat shoes/sandals. Admittedly I always wear flats but I just don't think they would work with heels although I couldn't tell you why. Keep the focus on the trousers - they're great!

dudsville · 10/06/2017 10:26

They're like culottes (sp?) aren't they? So it looks like a skirt most of the time? I'd keep that notion in mind when dressing around it.

burnishedsilver · 10/06/2017 10:36

A few ideas from Zara. (Theres no point in linking because I'm not in the uk so Zaras links won't work).

Thanks, Sharon and Breezy - most of the time I don't think about my shape and I just wear a safe range of clothes that I know fits me and suits me, but this was right out of my comfort zone and she was so unkind about my being an awkward shape (not dramatically awkward, but have hips and boobs so jackets either don't meet across the chest or gape at the waist, and trousers either pull at the hips or fall down at the waistline).

What about these Dune sandals?

OP posts:
TadlowDogIncident · 10/06/2017 10:56

Ooh, more posts! Yes, they're like culottes - on the hanger I initially thought they were a skirt.

I don't quite have the arms for a vest top, sadly: I have a nice fitted cream camisole that I think might work, but I'd need a cardigan or shrug to feel comfortable, and don't have anything that would work.

OP posts:
BreezyBreeze · 10/06/2017 11:33

Oo I like those sandals and think they'd look good with the culottes/trousers.

I think the trousers would work better with curves so it sounds like they'd suit you. Dont let a personal shopper throw you shade (as my dd would say!).

I agree with floisme about going simple but if you can't do vest then something simple and drapy but tucked in would work. Maybe silky.

Judydreamsofhorses · 10/06/2017 13:33

Cropped wide leg trousers are my current favourite thing. I think the trick is to wear something very neat on top, tucked in, otherwise you run the risk of looking like a triangle. Too casual for you, but I wear mine with brogues or trainers.
