Tips for managing with a smaller handbag?

bananafish81 · 07/06/2017 10:02

If you carry a small handbag, how do you do it?!

My handbag is like a suitcase because of all the stuff I schlepp around on a daily basis...

...But I can't see how I can strip it back because I use pretty much all of it at varying times (problem is I can't predict when I'll need them)

Currently carting around:

  • wallet
  • keys
  • oyster card
  • phone
  • work security pass
  • spare iPhone battery charger case + iPhone cable
  • folded up tote bag
  • handy pack tissues
  • mini deodorant
  • chewing gum
  • headphones case + headphones
  • small makeup bag
  • purse with assorted medications (I take a lot of different meds so have to have a load of different blister strips with me) - I also shove in a spare pair of contact lenses, couple of plasters, couple of safety pins
  • umbrella
  • in winter gloves (+ possibly hat), in summer a bottle of water

Plus very often for work a notebook, and sometimes a laptop as well

Regardless of the last two, I'm carting around a massive load.

And this isn't including the days when I have a gym bag as well!

But I can't see what I can strip back - anytime I decide 'I won't take the makeup bag with me', I end up needing to touch up before a big meeting and I have nothing with me.

Can't risk leaving the umbrella out, our weather is so unpredictable

Can't risk not taking iPhone battery case as it's saved my bacon umpteen times

Have ended up cursing myself if I've not had deodorant or tissues with me (London commuting!)

If you carry a small (or even a medium sized) handbag with you on a daily basis, how do you do it?!

Watching with interest as my handbag weighs a tonne - I carry almost exactly what you do plus my diary...

WifeofUthred · 07/06/2017 10:08

I wear a coat with a hood, so no umbrella. I hardly wear makeup up and if I do I never carry any other me to touch up later. I don't take deodorant, gum. Sometimes I have tissues. My headphones float free of in a tiny bag thing. Or in my coat pocket.

But then I'm not very organised, never have plasters and the like with me.

PNGirl · 07/06/2017 10:47

I am currently carrying in a medium sized (14 inch) satchel:

Smallish purse
Light umbrella
Kindle
Keys
Phone
Plasters
Lip Balm
Tiny MP3 player and earphones
Slim mobile charger and cable
2 foldable shopping bags
Notebook

I would never carry a bottle of water in my bag (I'd buy one and carry it if necessary) or a makeup bag - if I need makeup I put things in separately like a mascara, tiny pallette, foundation compact. I also carry leather gloves that fold up really small in winter.

PNGirl · 07/06/2017 10:51

Having a structured bag helps - if you have a big roomy one everything falls to the bottom and makes it bulky.

ClaudiaNaughton · 07/06/2017 10:54

Can you keep make up bag at work?

PaintingOwls · 07/06/2017 10:56

I have make up, tights and deodorant and sanitary stuff in my drawer at work permanently in case it need them. My charger is also permanently plugged in at my desk.

Get smaller headphones?

My bag has my purse, work pass, phone, ID, and keys. I travel light, but my bag is a big tote from Accessorize.

endofthelinefinally · 07/06/2017 10:58

Keep as many supplies at work as possible and carry a briefcase.

sonlypuppyfat · 07/06/2017 10:59

Can you use a rucksack for your brolly and make up bag etc and then just a small bag for your purse, keys etc

Judydreamsofhorses · 07/06/2017 11:22

I use a leather cross-body bag from Jigsaw, which is a "decent size", but for work I always carry a canvas tote bag too. In my proper bag I have:

Diary
Hat
Umbrella
Sunglasses
Little pouch with medication, tampons, a spare set of contact lenses etc
Small makeup bag - that day's lipstick, cream blush, lipbalm, tweezers (I keep a powder compact and brush in my desk)
Whiteboard pens (lecturer)
Proper pens
Tissues
Chewing gum
Purse
Phone/headphones
Fold-up brush
Fold-up shopping bag (I usually leave the tote in my office if I nip out at lunchtime)

In the tote I carry:

My lunch
Phone charger
Glasses in case I need to take my lenses out
Sometimes the umbrella gets moved in here, depending on the weather

Botanicbaby · 07/06/2017 11:23

I'd leave a lot of that at work if you can. Otherwise you need a comfortable backpack for carrying that around everyday! I like structured for carting laptop about to meetings like knomo bags.

I have cosmetics, prescription sunglasses as well as bottle of clarins spray. I don't bother with brollies though.

MaybeDoctor · 07/06/2017 11:35

I do believe in a 'big' bag rather than lots of little bags, but even so I have downsized a bit recently to a Longchamp Le Pliage small shopper.

My main criteria is that I should be able to carry something A4 if needed. Often I carry (train commute):

Purse (small) and keys
Loyalty cards held together with an elastic band
Phone
Book
Makeup case (smallish and flat)
Umbrella (lightweight Fulton)
Water bottle (not full)
Sunglasses in case (pen lives in here too atm)
Nylon shopping bag that folds into a small pouch

If the bag itself is not too heavy and you choose small versions of everything, then it helps. I certainly feel a bit more organised than when I was rooting around in my enormous leather hobo.

WellTidy · 07/06/2017 11:35

I carry everyday:

Purse
Separate cards wallet
Oyster card - lives in a pock on the front of my bag for easy access
Work security pass - as above
V compact umbrella
One of those bags that folds up v small indeed
Phone
Make up is limited to blusher and lipstick and that lives in an internal pocket with my compact holding hairbrush and 2 paracetemol and a plaster
Small notebook and pen

I keep everything else at work.

OhTheRoses · 07/06/2017 11:37

Small handbag:

Wallet
Bank books
Keys
Phone
Lipstick, pocket mirror
Paracetamol

Rucksack:
Ipad
Tissues
Umbrella
Day book
Paperwork
Lunch

At work I keep duplicate make-up, tights, wipes, pills, plasters, heels, spare brolly, cardigan, waterproof, hairbrush, etc, stamps, note cards, etc.

silkpyjamasallday · 07/06/2017 11:39

I think you may just have to resign yourself to carrying a big bag OP, especially if you really need all of the things. I only carry keys, wallet, phone and perfume, I very often go out with no bag at all. You could store some things like makeup bag at work to save space. Maybe a handbag organiser thing would make it less of a scrabble around for things, but it won't lighten the load. Get a nice rucksack so it doesn't ruin your back perhaps.

Sgtmajormummy · 07/06/2017 11:45

Use your phone to its full potential!
It can replace a diary, your store cards (there's an app I'm looking into), books to read and mp3 player.
It can even replace your notebook. The day I took a photo of a poster instead of writing down the information was an eye opener! Now I just scribble on the back of a receipt if I need paper and stick it in my purse.

I use a Reisenthel mini bag which contains phone, purse, glasses & sunnies, a multipoint pen, keys and a tiny makeup/sanpro purse.
However, my car is my mobile office. Is that cheating?

jollyhockey · 07/06/2017 11:46

I'm using a Chloe Mini Marcie just now ... it's tiny! In it I have purse, lipstick, keys and phone. Stops me carting the kitchen sink around! If I need said sink, I switch to a tote and it looks half empty

Cakescakescakes · 07/06/2017 11:52

I carry a small cross body because of a bad back and now I'm used to it all I carry is...

Keys
Purse (got a much smaller purse)
Phone
Small moleskin diary
Pen
Tinted lip balm
Comb (takes up less space than a brush!)
Pack of pocket tissues
Pen
Emergency tampon
Hair bobble
Couple of hair grips

That's it. Most of my coats have hoods. If I need to touch up make up I apply the to yes balm and blot my tzone with a tissue. Could you keep a small wash bag in work with make up, deodorant etc)?

Gooseygoosey12345 · 07/06/2017 11:54

Ok so let's look at the list

  • wallet
  • keys
  • oyster card
  • phone
  • work security pass
  • spare iPhone battery charger case + iPhone cable
  • folded up tote bag
  • handy pack tissues
  • mini deodorant
  • chewing gum
  • headphones case + headphones
  • small makeup bag
  • purse with assorted medications (I take a lot of different meds so have to have a load of different blister strips with me) - I also shove in a spare pair of contact lenses, couple of plasters, couple of safety pins
  • umbrella
  • in winter gloves (+ possibly hat), in summer a bottle of water

Do you need a whole wallet? Why not get a case for your phone that had a section for cards and cash?
Keys, obviously you need those.
Oyster card could go in phone case
Phone is unavoidable
Security pass I'm assuming isn't bulky so should be fine in there
Leave the iPhone chargers at work
What's the tote bag for? Seems unnecessary.
Tissues, mini deo and chewing gum could be in their own small pouch bag.
Use small headphones (like the iPhone ones), case should be small then too.
No need for a whole make up case, just take the essentials (lipstick & powder)
You don't need to take a whole blister pack of tablets, you can buy tiny pots for this. Cut around the tablet so you still have it in the packet. Then pop this in the pouch for the tissues etc., along with plasters etc.
If it's cold enough for gloves put them in your coat pocket

Honestly all that's in my bag is my purse, phone, keys, paracetamol, a few sweets, chewing gum a mini deodorant and a lipstick. Anything else I desperately may need can be bought if really necessary

mollyblack · 07/06/2017 11:57

I stopped carrying a bag in the winter and its been so liberating! My coat had big pockets. Now i have tiny pouch bag. All i carry now is:

Keys
Lipstick
Phone
Bank card
V lightweight folding shopper sometimes

I was such a "just in case" person so its been great to discover you dont need to carry ALL your store cards around all the time etc.

IHeartDodo · 07/06/2017 11:58

I have cut down by taking just a concealer rather than the whole makeup case (cases in general add a lot of bulk).
Also my purse is pretty big, and full of crap (old receipts and empty gifts cards etc) so that'd be my first thing...

rubybleu · 07/06/2017 12:10

My bag is medium sized and not very heavy. Every day I have two phones, card wallet (oyster and security pass), slim wallet, kindle, ear buds, prescription sunglasses, notebook and pen, tiny amenity bag and house keys. I can't necessarily use a small over the body bag, but it's not heavy.

  1. Downsize your iPhone charger to a lipstick size one and get a 10cm cable. The best chargers are Anker Powercore Mini and Amazon Basics does a 10cm cable. Weighs nothing and lives in its own drawstring case.
  1. Get smaller headphones if you're not already using earbuds. Most are pretty robust and don't need a case.
  1. I don't carry around makeup except for lipstick. My small toiletry bag has antihistamines, eye drops, neurofen, a tiny fold up brush & mirror, a lipstick, two tampons, a hair tie and blister plasters. I only carry emergency supplies.
  1. Keep two umbrellas in your desk and at home. I only ever carry one if it's obviously going to rain. Best small umbrella is the Totes Supermini.
  1. You don't need a bottle of water if you work in an office. Have a drink before you leave the house.
  1. Leave gloves & hat in your coat pocket in winter. You won't need them if it's not cold enough to wear a coat.
BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 07/06/2017 12:28

I think it's just lifestyle differences. I carry a medium bag to work (small LK Bennett tote) and all that's in it is:

  • Large purse
  • 2 separate cardholders
  • Makeup type bag which holds random bits like yours - pills, perfume, deodorant, mirror, plasters, SPF, etc.
  • Sunglasses
  • Tissues
  • Phone
  • Keys
If I need to take a laptop to work I would always take a separate bag for that.

On a weekend I'll swap to a really tiny bag and all it will have in is card holder, sunglasses and phone, maybe 1 key if I am out alone.

But... I drive to work, and am rarely out in the weather if I don't need to be. That removes an awful lot of stuff from your list!

AvoidingCallenetics · 07/06/2017 12:30

You need to leave crap like chargers and umbrellas and make up cases in the car and in your desk at work. I only take tampons out if my period is due. Charge your phone while driving and you are unlikely to need extra charging, esp if you turn off internet or put it on power save until you actually need it.

I only carry phone, keys and purse, tissues Occasionally a lipstick or tampon.

bananafish81 · 07/06/2017 17:44

Thanks all for your input - super helpful!

I use a Mulberry Roxanne satchel, which has loads of pockets and means stuff is easily accessible.

It's great because it's smart and elegant, and big enough that I can fit my laptop in it if I need. It's cross body as well, so means if I'm going to the gym that day, I can wear my gym rucksack AND my handbag.

That plus a use of little pouches for stuff means it's not hard to find stuff in the bag - it's just that there's a lot of it, so I wanted to see how those who don't cart their entire life around with them did it. It seems that having a car would help!

You've been so helpful to chip in, will try to respond to you, given you took the time to help me

Do you need a whole wallet? Why not get a case for your phone that had a section for cards and cash?
Keys, obviously you need those.
Oyster card could go in phone case
Phone is unavoidable
Security pass I'm assuming isn't bulky so should be fine in there
Leave the iPhone chargers at work

The whole point of the charger is for when I'm out and about and not at my desk so I don't have access to a plug, so that I don't have my phone die when I'm out and about. I'm often out and about for a whole day and can't charge if I'm running between meetings or sat on a train with no access to a power point (always request a seat with a charging point, but don't always get one!)

When I'm out and about is when the battery runs down the most, because of email, maps, messaging - I don't really use my phone much when I'm at my laptop and near a charger, it gets used when I'm on the go (when I can't charge!)

What's the tote bag for? Seems unnecessary.

Tote is so that I have a bag to use instead of a plastic bag in shops, and if I need to sling some big stuff in that doesn't fit in my bag (e.g I get something delivered to work that I need to bring home). That takes up next to no space, thankfully

Use small headphones (like the iPhone ones), case should be small then too.

Can you recommend any decent headphones? The Apple earbuds sound is atrocious, and so I've always used proper headphones for decent sound. I should do some research for decent earbud headphones to try out and see if there are any that aren't terrible. This is an area I could definitely slim down on

No need for a whole make up case, just take the essentials (lipstick & powder)

Yep, could definitely do this, and keep a makeup bag in my desk (or chuck it in my bag if I'm likely to head out for the evening after being out and about all day having, and not from my desk)

You don't need to take a whole blister pack of tablets, you can buy tiny pots for this. Cut around the tablet so you still have it in the packet. Then pop this in the pouch for the tissues etc., along with plasters etc.

Good idea, thanks. Though I need to carry up to 8 different kinds of medications with me, so wondering would 8 pots would be a bit bulkier than 8 small strips of pills?

If it's cold enough for gloves put them in your coat pocket

I don't think my coats actually have pockets! I'd better look...maybe a good excuse to buy a new winter coat?!

You need to leave crap like chargers and umbrellas and make up cases in the car and in your desk at work. I only take tampons out if my period is due. Charge your phone while driving and you are unlikely to need extra charging, esp if you turn off internet or put it on power save until you actually need it.

I don't have a car, so can't leave anything there. I live in central London where even when I did have a car, it never got used, as it wasn't practical to drive anywhere.

If I didn't have an umbrella in my bag, I would get absolutely soaked! I walk / tube / bus everywhere, and the weather changes so suddenly that it's very easy to get caught in a downpour. Yesterday was a prime example - the heavens opened and people leaving the tube station without an umbrella got absolutely drenched. If I had a car and could drive everywhere, or was tied to my desk all day, then I wouldn't need to cart all this stuff around with me in the first place

But... I drive to work, and am rarely out in the weather if I don't need to be. That removes an awful lot of stuff from your list!

This is exactly it. Unfortunately I don't have the budget to get an Uber to chauffeur me around everywhere Grin

Downsize your iPhone charger to a lipstick size one and get a 10cm cable. The best chargers are Anker Powercore Mini and Amazon Basics does a 10cm cable. Weighs nothing and lives in its own drawstring case.

Anker tip is brilliant, thank you! I use an Anker case, will definitely swap to the powercore - awesome tip

Keep two umbrellas in your desk and at home. I only ever carry one if it's obviously going to rain. Best small umbrella is the Totes Supermini.

Thanks for umbrella tip - much appreciated. What weather forecast do you recommend - because I've tried to leave it at home if it's forecast not to rain, and then ended up getting soaked by a surprise downpour. I use a WeatherPro app on my phone - any tips?

You don't need a bottle of water if you work in an office. Have a drink before you leave the house.

In summer TFL issue guidance to always have a bottle of water with you, which I've been massively grateful for when I've been stuck on a heaving and incredibly hot tube and feeling a bit faint or dizzy. Or indeed if I'm on the go all day and don't want to go all day without a drink! Would only have one with me if it's a scorcher, and the underground carriages get uncomfortably hot....

Also my purse is pretty big, and full of crap (old receipts and empty gifts cards etc) so that'd be my first thing...

YES! I so need to do this - so many loyalty cards for places I rarely go to could definitely get ditched.

Can you use a rucksack for your brolly and make up bag etc and then just a small bag for your purse, keys etc

Lots of you have mentioned a rucksack and a smaller bag - is there a benefit to having two bags if you need to cart this stuff around? My satchel handbag is really roomy so it comfortably accommodates everything above. I also forgot to include sunglasses and often a jumper or cardigan Grin

Those of you who don't bother with brollies, what's your secret?! Is it that you drive everywhere? Winter coat with hood makes sense - do you also have spring jackets with hoods as well? Yesterday was pretty warm so definitely not winter coat weather, but biblical rain - I saw people leaving the tube looking like drowned rats, soaked to the skin, because they hadn't anticipated it was going to rain...

What I actually need is a butler to carry everything around! Thanks for your advice (keep it coming..!)

I've got 1More single driver earbuds - about £30 on Amazon. They are robust - they get thrown in my handbag every day. They've got a microphone and work very well handsfree with my iPhone 6.

For weather apps, I just use the BBC app. I really don't ever get caught without a brolly with the home/work system.

My husband gave me a lovely Mulberry purse for my birthday and that encouraged me to ditch all the store cards as I didn't want to stretch the leather by jamming everything in. 9/10 stores can look you up on their terminals or you can use Apple Wallet or an app.
