mine was £160. one of my friends got a really nice one for £85 and at the other end of the scale one of my friends paid £220.

ImaWurzel · 19/03/2007 06:59

If any one wants one and their D is a 14 or you know a good seamstress i have one for sale. £25. + p&p.

Laura032004 · 19/03/2007 07:07

I've had some lovely dresses from TK Maxx for £20-£50

ImaWurzel · 19/03/2007 07:30

£20 + p&p.
not £25.
I've tried e-bay but no-one was interested

Charity shop or boot sale i guess.
Tk max does have good stuff in there.

JodieG1 · 19/03/2007 07:36

I'd spend as much as I needed to. I've bought dresses for £200 before so I'd definitely pay that for the perfect dress for her.

schneebly · 19/03/2007 07:38

I wouldn't pay any more than £60 you can get cracking ones on ebay for about that.

schneebly · 19/03/2007 07:39

but then again I only spent £130 on my wedding dress so am cheapo!

zippitippitoes · 19/03/2007 07:42

my dds had monthly allowances and jobs which means this sort of thing was up to them..a lot easier

brimfull · 19/03/2007 08:14

My friend is paying £230 for her dd's prom dress.I am shocked. Not including shoes.
MY dd's prom is next yr,must get her to start saving now

brimfull · 19/03/2007 08:19

I know zippi,it's nauseating, they all get limos aswell.Like getting bloody married!

OP posts:
brimfull · 19/03/2007 08:21

And the prom dress shops even keep a list of who buys which dress so there are no duplicates lol!!

i'm another advocate for TK MAXX or EBAY although come the time i'm sure i would spend around £100.

byt them there is the jewellery, the hire chauffer drien car etcetc.

and i have twins.

my son was lucky - he got a pinstripe suit of his girlfriends grandad - which ws perfect for him. he wanted to attend 30's ganster stylee, i got a trilby off ebay!

his girlfriend got a brand new one off an ebay shop and they made it to her measurements.

SSShakeTheChi · 19/03/2007 08:23

I don't know how much I would spend TBH. Depends a bit on what she looks like (she's only 6 now so hard to tell). Some girls look nice in any decent dress and some girls are less lucky. In the latter case, I'd probably spend more to ensure she looked good IYSWIM.

Hulababy · 19/03/2007 08:23

My leaver's ball dress at school was made by my auntie, so was pretty cheap in the end. As for DD, when old enough, I guess I'd spend similar to what I would spend on myself for a gown - so £100 or so, maybe more for the right dress, but would also look around for bargains too.

Ebay is great if you are a pretty standard size - rubbish for me as too short!

zippitippitoes · 19/03/2007 08:27

do some areas really make such a big thing?

can't beleive you have prom shops do you live in the US?

I thought it was just a leavers disco night

brimfull · 19/03/2007 08:29

It is ridiculous I agree zippi. No I live in hants. The shops are evening/wedding dress shops, but they all advertise "prom dresses".

Tortington · 19/03/2007 08:45

and if you dont order them the september before ( thats this september mums and dads!) then you will find come january your choice is limited seerely and by feb all the shops are booked and all the dresses gone.

Laura032004 · 19/03/2007 08:57

custardo - is that hire dresses you mean?

Would also recommend the BHS bridal range for shoes etc - not too expensive and good quality. They don't carry the range in all stores, but you can order from the catalogue and try on in store before buying.

Debehnams also have a good range of dresses for around £100.

zippitippitoes · 19/03/2007 08:57

definitely not happening like that here \i think they go to top shop and places

natmeistergeneral · 19/03/2007 09:19

We got hold of a beautiful monsoon dress on e-bay for £45.

dueat44 · 19/03/2007 10:07

Plan well ahead and take in a couple of Monsoon sales. 70% off ...

nappyaddict · 19/03/2007 10:11

wouldn't go to topshop and debenhams - loads of people do that and end up with the same dress. how !!

Blondilocks · 24/03/2007 19:03

I would avoid the most popular high street stores. TK MAXX is good - a friend got a dress in there for £30 which she wore to a uni ball. Another girl was wearing it but had paid over £100 elsewhere!

Would definitely be worth looking in the Monsoon sale or if you are near designer outlets they are always worth a trip. Other than that it may be worth looking in the end of season sale THIS year as people are less likely to have the same thing next yr.

Blondilocks · 24/03/2007 19:04

Jewellery isn't too much of a problem if you can get to an Accessorise .... reeeally pretty stuff without breaking the bank.
