I have discovered sunglasses as a hairband actually improve my style - what proper accessories could I try?

I am 41 - not very trendy but I do make an effort with my appearance. Currently growing out a jaw length bob so it is at that awkward stage. I have very thick hair that I style either curly/wavy or straight but it does tend to go a bit rectangle shaped - especially on the day it is washed - as it is so thick. Alice bands seem a bit twee but I don't think I am edgy enough to carry off a knotted bandana. Is there anything that would have the sunglasses effect but without making me look like a pretentious eejit for wearing my sunnies all year round?! Smile

Oh I'm watching this with interest! My hair looks great with sunglasses in!
And my face looks great with sunglasses on Grin
I love sunglasses

Freshprincess · 20/05/2017 20:59

I love the way my hair looks when I've got my sunglasses on my head. I've got a thin Alice band, but it just doesn't look the same.

Try either narrow elasticared hairbands (Superdrug have the Scunci non-slip ones) or wide fabric ones thus: uk.accessorize.com/view/product/uk_catalog/acc_5,acc_2.12/2864154100 (though not floral if you can help it)
You can also wear a bandana/scarf with the knot at the nape.

Same here, I have wavy below shoulder hair and routinely wear sunnies as a hair accessory. Bands don't give the same height. I find the best alternative is to twist my "fringe" (chin length) loosely back from my forehead and fasten with a couple of those flat spring clip things.

abigboydidit · 20/05/2017 22:02

Hmm.. I have to confess I have a ginormous napper have a largish head, so not sure how comfy a full headband would be. Agree that it's the height of the glasses that probably are making my hair look better. Reckon I would rock a pair of Minnie Mouse ears Wink Might have a go pinning the top section up but it always seems to look like a dodgy quiff Blush

What are the flat spring clip things abigboy?

CrispyBathTowel · 20/05/2017 22:06

Sorry, that should have been for whoknows rather than you OP Grin

Ah right, know what you mean now. Thanks Smile Thought I was missing out on some new fandango thing

Teardropexplodes · 20/05/2017 22:18

Just clip your fringe back with kirby grips, slightly off side.

friendlymum67 · 20/05/2017 22:18

This is me too! 😎 Will be watching and following with interest Smile

abigboydidit · 20/05/2017 22:40

I have no fringe! Maybe that's my problem? Am eyeing the scissors while I type and have had 2 glasses of wine so what could possibly go wrongConfused

Zigzag hair band!

woollyminded · 21/05/2017 09:02

I have the same hair! Try this. Put on said sunnies on head then do the pinning then remove the spex.

Does your hair ping out kirbies? Make sure you are using them the right way round (ruffly bit down) and invest in some good ones. Clippy aforementioned things are good too.

I would like some clips that are circles with the hinged arm over the middle, does anyone know what I'm talking about or where I could get them? I got some in HandM a while back but they were cheap and my hair broke them in less than a day

retainertrainer · 21/05/2017 09:04

To be honest I don't think anything looks as good as glasses in the hair-clips and hair bands are a bit meh.

I work with a professor, fabulous woman. She always has a pair of reading glasses on top of her head, she puts them in briefly when needed but otherwise she wears them more as a hair accessory.

retainertrainer · 21/05/2017 09:04

*on

Teardropexplodes · 21/05/2017 09:32

Just clip the front section back then. The bit that would be your fringe if you had one.
step away from the scissors

Anthropologie have got some gorgeous knotted and jewelled headbands. I've got one and I have an ET sized head and they dont hurt.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/05/2017 10:19

My hair pings out of kirbigrips but two of the flat clip things placed in opposite directions one behind the other work well.

abigboydidit · 21/05/2017 10:33

I totally wreck clips usually! Kirbies seem to be hit or miss. Pinning hair around glasses sounds a clever idea - will give that a go. The headbands on that site are absolutely lovely. They seem quite padded so may add some height? Am tempted but would like to try one on first - off to see if they have stockists near me. Thanks all for the posts so far.

I often wear gold hair slides like I used to when I was 7, 70s style. Love it.
