Would you/have you asked a complete stranger where they got an item of clothing?

I was following a couple down the street and could not stop staring at her outfit, especially her top. But I didn't ask her where it was from, though would've liked to, because she was really glam and stylish and groomed and I was looking decidedly scruffy!

Yes I would. I have been asked too and think it's a great compliment.

I ask all the time. Either for myself or if I see a young woman wearing something my daughter might like.

Strangely, a lot of the things I ask about are from Canada!

I've done this more than once and I've had it done to me.

People are only ever pleased at the compliment to their taste, IME.
