Interview suit for dh

beckybrastraps · 15/03/2007 10:17

Dh is not a suit person. Works as an engineer, smart-ish but not suits. He's currently looking for a new job, and needs a good suit for interiews. It has been years since he bought one, and we have no idea where, or what.

Help...

Should add, he is about 6ft, broad shoulders. Rugby player-type build.

DH is also an engineer, and only recently started wearing suits. M&S are quite good - you can buy different sized trousers and jackets and there's a good choice. You'll have to pay about £140 probably. You can even get ones that go in the washing machine! If you're only getting one for the interview and it will never be worn again, you'd probably get a cheaper one in Burtons or somewhere. Good luck with interviews!

Apparently it should be a good suit. His mentor has told him that in no uncertain terms. He's going for head of engineering type jobs. First interview on Monday, but not sure if it's the right job for dh. Good practice anyway. Thanks for the good luck wishes

Budget - hmmm - how much do suits cost? 200-300 pounds? We really have no idea at all. It's one of the things I need to know - to prepare dh... Especially if it's more than that. But his mentor has spoken and he is prepared to flex the plastic...

And what colour? I was thinking dark grey?

Dark grey or navy are good bets, and if you get a good one he will end up wearing it for weddings etc for years and years so a few hundred now is a good investment.

My DH is the same shape as yours and does well in Suits You and Moss - the cheaper places (Burton, M&S) and the 'edgier' places (Next, TopMan) seem to be cut for v slim men with thin thighs. Reiss worth a try, also Austin Reed if they have a sale on or you cn get to one of their factory outets.

Off the top of my head, look for something all wool, plain colour, single breasted, three button. Vents (if any) depends on shape of his bottom but single is more modern than double.

dh is tres successful in the citeeeee

very choosy about posh ties shirts and shoes but swears by m&s suits - one of the few places you can buy the jackets and trews separately (essential for him as he gets through the trousers more quickly so always buys two pairs with one jacket)

not £££ at all

MrsBadger · 15/03/2007 11:45

good point re 2 x trousers if you wear it every day, but not worth buying two pairs for an occasional-use suit.

If you are 'M&S shaped' they are great.

arf re m&s shaped

dh is ex rugby player

big chest and arms

a-hem "welsh" legs

but not hugely tall (5'11" i think)? does this correspond mrsbee?

Tutter · 15/03/2007 11:49

just seen you say m&s for slim men

that is def not dh

(>14 stone)

clumsymum · 15/03/2007 12:00

Just to let you know, DH buys a suit about onceevery 2 years, and spends about £350. Go to a GOOD independent taylor, who will find the best fit for him, and will be able to make any slight alterations (trouser or sleeve length).
Generally speaking paying a bit more will mean that the suit looks better for longer. Cheap suits tend to lose their shape quicker.

If you need to look at a lower budget, then I second the suggestion of M&S, who do a good range for £150 ish.

It's worth getting a decent quality WHITE shirt too (M&S are excellent for these, about £40), and good silk tie that is cheerful without being brash (not comedy figures on it either !!)

Good luck

MrsBadger · 15/03/2007 12:02

must be more about shape than size
DH is 6'1" and 14st ish but it's v unevenly distributed - all on shoulders and thighs with small waist and bottom in between.

Think the only guidance here is go and try some on, becky...

beckybrastraps · 15/03/2007 13:44

Bugger.

He will be miserable trawling round the shops.

Thanks for all the advice.

Dh is definitely not slim-legged, but is pert of arse

Anyway, will try M&S first, using the highly successful Mr Tutter as an example. Also thought about John Lewis...

And will get a white shirt too.
