Curly haired dd - will a visit to the hairdresser help?

My 8 year old dd has curly hair. I'd describe it as spiraly but quite loose curls. I've never been very good at caring for it (poker straight hair myself) and have been guilty of brushing it when dry which I know realise is not good for it.
As a result the top layers are straighter and quite frizzy although there are lovely curls underneath.
Up to now I have always trimmed it myself but I am wondering if I take her to the hairdresser would the outer layer curl again if they washed and dried it properly or is it a longer term thing to get the curl back?
DD is very shy and hates fuss so if it wouldn't make any difference I'd just trim it myself and continue trying to sort it myself.
Thanks

The majority of hairdressers don't know how to cut curly hair let alone style it, so to be honest you're probably better off continuing cutting at home!

However... if you live near Birmingham, Matthew James cuts curly hair and does it very well, as well as styling it properly afterwards. His salon is called Spring.

Google "curly girl method" to get hair care tips (number 1 is no brushing!) and you can probably get the curls back into the top layer with some tlc and lots of moisture.

Thanks Aurora. I'm not too worried about the cut - she wants to keep it quite long. It's more to do with the condition. I'd love to get the bouncy head of curls she had as a toddler back.
I've started using a very moisturising shampoo and conditioner and sometimes I wash with conditioner only.
Trying to only comb it when wet too.

If you want to improve the condition, try leaving in some coconut oil overnight, add it mostly to the ends, (put a towel down over the pillows) best done on a weekend so you have time to wash it out in the morning.

If you're in London I can recommend a mobile curly hairdresser, they give fab advice on how to look after curls and cut it beautifully too.

Find a hairdresser who has curly hair herself (or himself). It took me 30 years to work that one out!

Coconut oil rubbed thoroughly pre-shampoo followed by the 'plop and drop' method post-shampoo restored my curls. You need good leave in conditioner and some kind of curl cream/serum.
