Help me dress my son for a wedding!

Please!

Have a HUGE family wedding next month and I still don't have an outfit for my ds who is nearly 9 (ridiculously tall though so in age 10-11 clothes). We had another family wedding last year and he wore a suit (trousers jacket, shirt and tie) and he hated it! The jacket came off as soon as the ceremony was over closely followed by the tie (and then all put back on for photos)! The whole outfit wasn't cheap either as he needed shoes and now this year the whole lot is too small.

Would it be frowned upon for him to wear "nice" tailored shorts, a shirt and shoes or is that not the done thing for a wedding? He is good and he will suck it up and wear a suit if he has to but at the moment he is banging on about wearing "nice shorts"!

Thanks!

I think nice shorts and a smart shirt sounds quite good. My son wore that to a semi formal function last week. Terribly expensive to kit out a child in a suit they'll hate and wear once. Not to mention wasteful.

My son wore smart jeans and a nice shirt to my wedding last year when he was 10.

And thinking about it, my nephews who would have been 8 and 10 at the time worse similar to my 1st wedding years ago.

I think tailored shorts would be fine. My two wore smart chinos, a shirt and navy linen type waistcoat and looked great

Thanks everyone, he will be pleased! We are going shopping straight from school tomorrow so will have a look for some shorts and a smart shirt.

I thought shorts would be ok but dh wasn't so sure and everyone is scared of his Sister (it's her daughters wedding) so everything has to be perfect

Wild it is so wasteful and stupidly expensive, he has the suit and shoes from last year in his wardrobe practically brand new because he wore them from 1pm until 11pm!

Squirrels I got married in 2013 when ds was nearly 5 and he wore smart jeans and a nice shirt with a blazer which looked great! That was my wedding though so no one there to upset!!

My DS wore tailored linen shorts with a matching linen waistcoat, and a white grandad shirt (undone) and a buttonhole. He almost outshone the bride [proud mother emoticon]

I like linen trousers, white shirt + linen waistcoat with converse style shoes. Monsoon are good for this.

WildCherryBlossom · 07/05/2017 19:26

Agreed - monsoon are ideal for these sort of things. But OPs son is tall. They may not go up that big? Zara kids l is also good. They usually have a decent range of shirts and smart shorts. We had a pretty formal wedding (men in tails etc) didn't have many children. Just a handful of family - all boys. It was summer time and they all wore variations on this outfit (mostly Monsoon as far as I remember) apart from my youngest nephew who was potty training with moderate success and changed into ever more bonkers outfits as they day wore on 😂

Something like this...? Wink

Monsoon boys go up to a 12 so you're just in there.
I'd avoid bow ties personally.

WildCherryBlossom · 07/05/2017 20:58

🙈 Oh my eyes that poor boy!

GriseldaChop · 08/05/2017 07:25

Next have some great chino shorts and nice smart but comfy shirts, it's far better he's comfy and enjoys himself and I'm sure he'll still look lovely.

I also have a very tall 8 year old DS , currently wearing (plain) 11-12 girls t shirts (boys ones are far too wide). Tailored shirts and a a shirt are our go-to smart outfit. I took this from my sister , who lived in a hot country and has an older DS. We replace shorts with cords in the winter.

CMOTDibbler · 08/05/2017 08:08

For a big wedding, I'd say shorts weren't appropriate.
Last year for a wedding, ds (then 10) wore nice shirt, waistcoat, trousers from Asda with Converse that matched his shirt. He looked smart and appropriate, but was comfortable, and the shoes and shirt got worn again
