Will swimming regularly ruin my hair?

justaddjam · 06/05/2017 11:18

I've got dry, highlighted, stringy hair.
I wash it daily because it looks a state if I don't and have now decided to add chlorine into the mix.
Any tips for preserving the colour and condition?

Swimming cap seems the obvious solution!

Graceflorrick · 06/05/2017 11:21

Yes, I always wear a swimming hat for this reason.

OdinsLoveChild · 06/05/2017 11:22

You could try a swimming cap/hat. My hair was completely ruined by chlorine as I used to go for a quick swim most days after work without a hat. I had it cut short to regrow and stopped swimming as much. Im a bit fatter now but have lovely silky hair again. Blush

BitchPeas · 06/05/2017 11:22

It did mine until I started smothering it in conditioner. Just cheap one so I could use loads, and wearing a swimming hat. It worked really well.

justaddjam · 06/05/2017 11:36

Swimming hat and conditioner it is then. I haven't worn a cap for years but the last time my hair was soaking so I didn't think it'd be worth it.
Thanks.

If you swim with your face in the water doesn't hair get wet even with a cap on?
Smotheringyour hair with something greasy might work but then you'll be swimiming with an oil slick in your wake 😞

CorrigansDoorKnob · 06/05/2017 12:45

Hair will get wet with a swimming cap. It doesn't keep your hair dry if you're going for a proper swim. A cap keeps you hair out of your face and helps with streamlining through the water. Conditioner will make the cap slip off, which is very annoying. My hairdresser told me to wet my hair with the shower before getting in the pool as then it won't absorb pool water as much. Sometimes I just rinse my hair through with conditioner afterwards, rather than shampooing my hair each time.

I use Philip Kingsley swim cap hair treatment when swimming and on hols to protect my hair: Swimcap Hair Cream Not cheap but it does work

FatGirlWithChocolate · 06/05/2017 15:30

I swim nearly every day, don't wear a cap as hair is very thick and bushy..also dye hair so with chlorine makes double whammy..not good..heard about this and started using it, leaves hair beautifully soft..they do shampoo and normal conditioner too all half price at present.

I swim almost every day. Use a swim cap and do the condition shampoo condition. My hair is absolutely fine. One tip. Use the coconut water hair treatment as a conditioner. (Cheap from Superdrug)

Artyfarty555 · 07/05/2017 19:43

Jeaux90, which treatment is it? The Superdrug's own coconut water conditioner or the masque one? Or the more expensive £6.99 branded one? I'm thinking of going back to swimming and although l wear a hat my hair always feels ruined and because it's fine a conditioner sometimes just makes it lanky!

jeaux90 · 07/05/2017 20:25

The Superdrug branded masque. I use it like a conditioner. Love it

BestIsWest · 07/05/2017 20:34

I use Boots Swim/Gym protection masque, put on before you get in he pool.

CMOTDibbler · 07/05/2017 20:41

Wear a hat (it does help, even though your hair gets wet), and I swear by the Boots Swim and Gym shampoo and conditioner. I have long hair, swim 3 or 4 times a week, and its in great condition.

llangennith · 07/05/2017 20:45

I have curly (frizzy) hair and I haven't found anything to counteract the effect of chlorine. You just do the best you can with conditioner etc and accept your hair isn't going to be perfect.

Sciurus83 · 07/05/2017 23:01

Philip Kingsley swim cap

TheLegendOfBeans · 08/05/2017 09:49

Boots Sun Swim and Gym Shampoo + Comditioner is the dog's danglers and totally transformed my hair from stringy to swishy.

I swim 4 times a week x

justaddjam · 08/05/2017 09:53

Thanks all.
Ive bought Philip Kingsley Swimcap, Elasticizer and a very unflattering rubber swimming hat.
Will report back in a month.
