Chicken skin

I found my 7yo daughter using my expensive Clinique facial exfoliating cream on the chicken skin on her arms. Some kids at school have been talking about it and she was trying to rub it off. It made me feel so sad for her.

I said I'd buy those exfoliate glove things for in the bath and she already uses Balneum which has 5% urea that's meant to help... is there anything else we can do to help her with this rough chicken skin? It's getting worse as she gets older and she's getting really self conscious about it.

Google keratosis Pilaris, you'll find tips and tricks to help get rid of it.
Apparently flexitol cracked heel cream is supposed to work wonders, possibly due to the 25% urea.

Teabagtits · 06/05/2017 00:07

Thanks chester I couldn't remember it's official name. A dermatologist gave us the balneum years ago saying it was the strongest they had to offer but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Is a higher urea content safe?

I'm honestly not sure, Ive read about it on a Facebook beauty page, however now you mention it, it was all adults discussing it so not sure if it would be ok for a child. Maybe a pharmacist would be able to advise.

I've had it all my life and my DS also has it really badly. It makes him really self conscious and I had kids pick on me when I was young too Sad

Taking a regular multi vitamin, getting some sunshine and also yes a bit of exfoliating helps. We have tried Flexitol and also a Palmers cocoa butter cream for aging skin from Amazon. They both help but can be a bit sticky and greasy so he doesn't like using them.

A water softener might help if you can afford to get one fitted so that showers and baths are less drying.

Once she's older then I'd recommend a silky mitt hair remover for legs which is like very fine sand paper. Sounds barbaric but it's not painful and my legs are super smooth after using it.

I was prescribed Diprobase for a while too, which did help the roughness but not the speckled look.

Urea cream and a salicytic acid (e.g. flexitol and nip and fab pads) should get rid of it.

I misread and thought she was 17. Im shocked that other 7 year olds are comminting on her skin! Its tough being a kid these days.

SarahBeeney · 06/05/2017 00:32

Sunshine definitely improves it.
I also take fish oils as I don't eat enough oily fish and this definitely helps my KP and dry skin.

Thanks all

feedme sunshine would be lovely but we're in Scotland (although it's been sunny for past few days just not warm) Also means we have soft water.

Thanks burnishedsilver I'll look into these pad things. It broke my heart when I found her in the dark scrubbing her arms. She shouldn't have to deal with that crap yet. Thankfully one of the worst offenders for being a wee shite to her about it loved to a different school! :)

sarahbeeney fishoils will be fun :/ but I'll give it a go thanks.

My ds has it.
Stay away from all soap if you can at all. I get him to bathe and rub a sock with porridge oats on it and then exfoliate with a loofah. We then use Lush Dream Cream which really helps.
He is a bit smoother and softer afterwards but I think sun will make all the difference!

BWatchWatcher · 06/05/2017 08:25

You can get chewy multi vitamins with omega 3. There are some tropical ones that the kids seem to like.

Kennethnoisewater · 06/05/2017 08:26

Ameliorate scrub and then the lotion. Completely gone in 3 days. Amazing stuff.

Moogoo have a product for this. Can't remember which one, but the reviews were absolutely raving.

I had awful chicken skin on my arms. I tried many things to get rid of it.

Last year whilst on holiday I bought some l'occitane Almond Shower oil. I have been using it every day. I use a normal shower gel and then rub the Almond oil on when I'm in the shower. I don't rinse it off but then towel dry.

I have found that my chicken skin has completely disappeared and I didn't buy the product for that reason. It's not the cheapest, but you can buy it with a refill pack for £33 in JohnLewis. I bought mine in November and I've used the original bottle and I'm halfway down the refill pack. So it does last.

Thanks. You've given me lots of options to consider & try with my daughter
