Red, blotchy, but non-bumpy, upper arms - what to do?!

lisbapalea · 01/05/2017 15:01

My upper arms are weirdly red and blotchy. The very top of them, where a cap sleeve / t-shirt would go is normal colouration but then it goes red and blotchy, which looks worse as the blotch is on top of my freckles. It looks like sunburn but it isn't - it's always like this, even in midwinter, and as I truly hate my arms (mega bingo wings as well as odd colouring) I do my best not to get them out.

I have see people on here recommend flexitol for people with bumpy upper arms but I don't know if that would work for me as my skin is smooth, just oddly coloured.

Really weird pic of my arm attached....

Any advice / recommendations?!

Me ... so mine go away when I eat selenium - a mineral found in brazil nuts. Also go away with a good scrub and a dose of sunshine - which is why they are worse at this time of year (no sun yet!).

Can also be a sympton that you need more essential fatty acids apparently ...

margaritasbythesea · 01/05/2017 22:16

I am much paler than you but have similar. In my case, two dermatologists have told me there is nothing to do. I'm sorry not to help but I am hoping this thread might help us both!

Looks like keratosis pillaris, though that usually comes with a pimple texture. Sali Hughes wrote a column on this with some recommendations.

lisbapalea · 01/05/2017 22:38

Thanks! Will go large on the Brazil nuts and might try the cheaper of Sali Hughes' recommendations.

Just googled foods that contain fatty acids and feel ok on that score as I do eat loads of oily fish and nuts, mainly almonds but maybe I will see if I can eat even more and see what happens!

margaritasbythesea · 03/05/2017 05:56

It's going to try Selenium aka Brazil nuts.

I get this. It's much worse on one arm than the other, for some reason. I've found Eucerin with 10% urea helps, as do Nip & Fab pads. A bit of sunshine seems to. A tan (real or fake) definitely makes it less noticeable anyway. Dry brushing seemed to irritate it and make it worse. It's very frustrating though, really hard to shift. I've successfully all but banished cellulite, but had nowhere near as much luck with chicken skin.

margaritasbythesea · 10/05/2017 20:09

How did you banish your cellulite doobi?

hollyisalovelyname · 10/05/2017 20:44

Apparently a cream called Ameliorate is very good. Bought it for one of my dds. It worked. Expensive though.

I use up what's left on my NIp and Fab pads after I used them on my face on the tops of my arms and it seems to work.

miabug8911 · 11/05/2018 19:48

Desperate for HELP!!"!"

I also have this, and I don’t believe it’s keratosis pelaris. Because I also have no bumps, just redness and blotchy spots. My dermatologist gave me a strong cortisone cream to use, and my doctor prescribed me a lotion that I believe is “amlactin”? Both haven’t shown huge progress. Although, the skincare brand L’Occitane sells an almond smoothing and beautifying milk concentrate and one of the reviewers said it helped the redness on their arms. Could help!

Diceteezy · 14/09/2018 23:53

By the way, I don’t think it’s related to diet. I think it’s more along the lines of your skin’s pores being inflamed and visibly showing. That’s why getting a tan helps hide it, which has also worked for me. Even self-tanners are preferable because sun damage is real guys! The redness is something I’m definitely self conscious of, but I’m not willing to risk sun damage just to make my arms look less red in pictures!

Also, studies have proven that this doesn’t relate to a gluten intolerance in any way.

rmcravens · 09/08/2019 20:34

So i know this is an old post, but my arms literally look identical! Did you ever find a solution?

inadaydream40 · 08/09/2019 08:12

I have the same issue. It's really strange. It looks like a farmer tan on my arms if I wore a t-shirt. Only it's red, patchy and sometimes I get bumps above my elbows. I haven't seen a dermatologist yet. I had planned to, but I see enough doctors since I have MS.
What I have found to help the redness is rose water. "Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the redness of irritated skin, get rid of acne, dermatitis and eczema. It is a great cleanser and aids in removing oil and dirt accumulated in clogged pores", says Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, Skincare Expert.
Hope this helps. If you ever find out, I'd be curious to know what it is. If I ever find out, I'd let you all know.

Pinkvici22 · 08/09/2019 08:40

Korean cloths. They were recommended on here and I use them once a week - arms and legs are now perfectly smooth and non-blotchy. I have a long soak in the bath, exfoliate with Superdrug vitamin c body scrub then use the Korean cloth - amazing!

NinetySixer · 08/09/2019 10:32

I have found that goats milk soap has cleared mine up. Found this by accident as I decided to treat myself to a bar.

I’m no stuck spending £££s a month on soap just so that my extremities don’t look blotchy. Hmm

rludewig · 29/04/2020 18:24

I know this is a thread for a couple years, anyone have any advice. I have the exact same thing and it never goes away. I have searched and search to figure out what it is and everything that comes up doesnt seem to match it. Anyone figure out yet what it is? Also anything that helps the reddness appear less red?

Inthestars21 · 23/03/2022 14:07

Hello! I know this is really old, just curious is your still experience this? Does it happen to go away when you lay down?

Millyno · 26/04/2025 05:30

I know this is an old post but has anyone found out what this is or what makes it go away. I've had the same upper arm super red blotchy skin. No bumps. Just like sunburn. Had for several years now. Fatty arms and red blotchy skin definitely make you self conscious.
