If I buy a gunmetal Le Pliage might I just as well give up on fashion forever?

It's payday. I'm tempted by a Le Pliage (large, long handles) in gunmetal grey. I really badly need a new work bag that will hold tons of A4 files/papers etc, plus iPad, large purse, water bottle etc etc and also look reasonably smart.

But...since I've started thinking about buying one, I've just realised they're everywhere. And it's not as if I'm a fashion maverick (I currently tote around a knackered old Herschel backpack fgs) but...are they just too, too dull? Or are they a classic which I will never regret buying?

Well, yes, I suppose it would... Maybe I should turn it inside out and sponge it with hot soapy water...?

ALittleLemonTwist · 29/04/2017 12:07

I've always slung mine in the washing machine. Never had a problem!

Girlywurly · 29/04/2017 12:10

Great, thanks. Smile

1sttimemum2014 · 29/04/2017 12:19

Thanks for the tip will chuck it in the washing machine this afternoon. Ruined the insoles in my trainers last week by putting them through washing machine so was a bit nervous about doing it!

Girlywurly · 29/04/2017 12:24

I have just popped mine in! If it comes out wrecked then I'll be back to update...

Sorry for the thread hijack, OP. The gunmetal grey sounds lovely, IMO.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/04/2017 12:38

You can personalise your Pliage on their website, it's still not cutting edge but you could at least choose a colour combination that isn't in the shops, and get your initials embroidered or embossed.

Bobbins43 · 29/04/2017 12:45

I think they're really stylish! I see them everywhere too but I think that just reinforces their status as a nice useful bag. Go for it, I say. (Trying not to convince myself I need one)

PenguinOfDoom · 29/04/2017 16:56

@Girlywurly How did it come out? I really want to know as mine needs a wash!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 29/04/2017 17:01

can't beat 'em for work if you need to carry papers, netbook, and all the other shite I need. They last well (unlike some leather bags I've had) and are waterproof with a tight seal, which again if you're out and about for work is great. I know they're not exactly high-fashion, but unless your work IS fashion then that's not the end of the world.

wiltingfast · 29/04/2017 17:04

Well I personally dislike them, but they are a lot nicer than an ugly backpack so go for it!

Girlywurly · 29/04/2017 17:05

Came out great, Penguin - good as new.

PenguinOfDoom · 29/04/2017 17:17

Thanks! I'll wash mine too. What temp did you use? I'm guessing 30 degrees is fine. Mine is a red one and it's looking a bit grubby.

explodingkittens · 29/04/2017 17:21

You've all decided me (especially now I know they go through the wash!)

Gunmetal grey, large, with long handles it is!

Has anyone designed something that could work as a divider in it??

Itsmeitscathy · 29/04/2017 18:41

I have one I spilled coffee on - it's beige and has an Eiffel Tower on it. Can it be rescued?

1sttimemum2014 · 29/04/2017 19:17

Oh thanks @Girlywurly I will put mine in tonight. I've got the gun metal grey in large with the long handle and had to get it from selfridges as they didn't have in my local John Lewis / house of Fraser so you don't see as many of them BUT they are nice and handy so who cares really

ElspethFlashman · 29/04/2017 19:40

Hamster I got a handbag insert a few years back. I think they're called handbag organisers.

Anyway I eventually threw it out. I found that because the Le P has a rounded bottom and is slippy inside, the organiser tended to slide skewways. And invariably things would fall out of it and slide underneath to languish forgotten for weeks.

Tbh the best system with them is a series of slim make up bags for your various bits of shite - chargers, pens etc.

1sttimemum2014 · 29/04/2017 19:49

I use a small longchamp purse to put things in that I want to be able to find quickly it matches and looks quite nice it's not a divider as such but might help you out

wiltingfast · 30/04/2017 07:23

There are people on test that will make one to size; like this elaborate pile one

Search felt bag organisers and loads pop up.

I had one made for a large tote bag a few years ago and it is great.

wiltingfast · 30/04/2017 07:24

I mean pilage obviously Grin

wiltingfast · 30/04/2017 07:25

And ETSY!!!

SpeckledyHen · 30/04/2017 07:31

I love them and use one for work . My bag has to be stored in a drawer at work and it's perfect for that - squashes down easily and pops out perfect at the end of the day .

I always use one as carry - on for flights as they are light , have a zip and again can slip under the seat in front as they are squashy .

SpeckledyHen · 30/04/2017 07:36

Samorga make an organiser for The Pliage . I dint have one for mine but have one for another bag and it's fantastic .

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/04/2017 08:55

Longchamp will only repair the corners if you have the receipt. Which irritates me as it's clearly their fucking bag.

greyffinch · 30/04/2017 09:08

Totally practical but very boring, sadly. And be careful, if you get one, people seem to think you like them and you start getting hem for presents!
