The absurdity of Next

How do they get away with it? And why is still so popular?

I did use to like it. And yes, the baby and toddler clothes are still gorgeous. But I stopped ordering for me from the website or directory because the items were NOTHING like those pictured - different cuts, different fabrics, more see through etc.
Plus everything went boxy, the vanity sizing is confusing, and there's very little cotton or natural fibres to be seen.
Plus I hate the whole 'Next sale' VIP drama when it's clearly 90% bought-in sale horridness.

But - I got a giftcard for my birthday so just been to the website for a browse. Saw a few tops I quite liked but the pricing is a bit stealthy now - as in, a top in a plain colour will be £12 but the same top in a print might be £18 or even £25. What's that all about?
The only decent things I saw were sold out in mainstream sizes - there's no 'email me when back in stock' option, even Matalan offer this.
I just don't get the popularity of it at all!

Back in the late 80s to mid 90s Next was the shop on the high street. More expensive than most other high street shops, but definitely more stylish and better quality. At my sixth form college carrying your belongings round in a Next bag was tres cool - they used to be made of thick white paper with string handles, remember?

I can remember buying a stunning red, crushed velvet body-con dress from there that cost £120 back in about 1991! And, a beautiful cream, cotton knitted jumper for about £70 in 1995. I wore them both for years (DD2 now wears the jumper).

It's nigh impossible to spend £70 on a Next jumper now - 95% of their stock looks and feels cheap and synthetic.

My teen DDs wouldn't dream of shopping there. I think they now target women who grew up thinking Next was a bit posh but couldn't afford it - but 20 years later they can, and think they're getting something special.

I like the kids wear, homeware and shop there for the brands - however the next womens clothes are not to my taste!! The mens suits however are not bad
Love the next day delivery though

That's weird MaQueen because on Friday I was really lucky enough to spot a pair of trousers in khaki from Next, that just skim the ankle.

If you hurry you could probably still get them.
