Mulberry bag

DH bought me a 'lily' for my birthday, it's one I've wanted for a long time but never thought I would actually ever get it. However, I am now worried about using it and somehow ruining it. I bought the spray that was recommended and so it's been treated.

When I told my DSis of my 'worries' she replied with this: 'Bullshit Pony. Take it. Love it. Live it. That's what will make it your bag. Otherwise leave it in the shop and sniff it once a year.' I know she's right.

I suppose what I'm asking is, if you have one, how do you look after it - & are there any tips for keeping it in good condition??

I could never afford a Mulberry handbag....however I love them! I think they age really well, the older the better, they look even better once they have been softened and worn in a bit, they are such great quality and designed to last a lifetime. Use it, love it and enjoy it!

I have a Mulberry Del Ray - I use it as my work bag. I work in a secondary school so a fairly high risk environment for a bag. It has highlighters, board pens and all sort of potential bag disasters inside it.

What do I take it to work? I love it, it makes me happy and it's v practical (can fit my lunch and all work junk in it). I did have a bottle of water empty itself in it recently but it survived unscathed.

Use your gorgeous bag - it will make you smile Smile

I have the Bayswater, I used the treatment a few times when I first bought it but it's currently about 5 years old.

I use it constantly and at that price would feel guilty if I didn't!

It does have one bad scuff that's now almost a hole, I would love to get it repaired but heard it's expensive to do so and also heard mixed reviews of doing this!

PNGirl · 18/04/2017 09:49

What colour is it? The main thing to be aware of is the dreaded colour transfer if it's anything other than black. You need some kind of clear leather cream to get that off if it happens.

PNGirl · 18/04/2017 09:50

My Bayswater is 4 years old now but not used much as there's a hole in the piping at one corner. I'm a bit disappointed with it if I'm honest as that happened in about 18 months and they wanted £120 to fix it.

I have a couple of mulberrys and a Louis Vuitton. I use them daily - life is too short to save anything for best! I spray the mulberrys with colonil spray regularly and am careful not to chuck them around too much. I have also used a polish that you apply with a cloth to minimise wear on the corners, think that is colonil too.

My grandma is 92 and saves her designer bag for best i.e. about twice a year. Have tried to subtlety suggest to her that at her age she will never wear it out but with no avail..

Slightly off topic OP -I have a Lily and I find it a bugger to have on my shoulder and open the flap without a couple of things falling out. The only way round this seems to be to considerably underfill it, which is a pain.
Have you had this problem? I love her dearly but I'm starting to wish I'd bought another style (Sorry, I know that's worthy of a DailyMailSadFace)

MooMinCow · 18/04/2017 10:37

Lady (I found the liner helps to keep the shape of my lily and stop it folding over). I got mine here

LadyOfTheCanyon · 18/04/2017 10:39

MooMinCow that looks worth a look -thank you so much!

Ponyboycurtis · 18/04/2017 10:50

PNgirl that's another thing I'm worried about (to add to the list), its oak/tan.

I'm still going to 'use and abuse' though!

I have three mulberry bags, a giant Alexa, mini Alexa and a carter. I'm not precious with them, no sprays used on the leather and all are still going strong after 5ish years, the mini Alexa has a bit of wear on one corner but until it is noticeably bad I won't be sending it to be repaired. Mine are black, mid grey and beige in colour, and the beige is as clean looking as the black. Mulberry are really good for this, I have a friend who really puts her bags through the mill and they come back good as new, so should anything disastrous happen, split glow stick goo or coffee stain you can send it back and they will sort out the problem even replacing whole sections of leather or straps. It isn't cheap but it will mean you can use your bag forever.

I agree with your sister, no point having something and not using it for the purpose it is designed for. I don't like anything to look too new and perfect, so perhaps I am biased, if you like to look very smart and put together then obviously take steps to avoid it looking scruffy with the spray etc. I think with the slouchier styles the leather changing as it ages is lovely, I used to love seeing pictures of the Olsen twins with horrendously battered Hermes bags, but I love their millionaire scruff look Grin. I've used mine in sticky nightclubs, for weekends away, carry on flight bag and for uni and they have survived all that on a high rotation of uses and don't think they look scruffy yet. If you buy something like a handbag surely the joy comes from using it, if you use things they won't look shiney and new.

aderyn I have a mini kite in navy, I love mine. The only thing I find is that as it's quite 'open' at the top, it does tend to attract bits of dust etc when out and about.

pony congratulations on your new bag! I love Mulberry, I have a few. Use it and enjoy it as others have said. I've never used the cream (maybe I should get some?) but I try and look after my bags fairly well when out, I don't put them on the floor if I can help it.

thethoughtfox · 18/04/2017 12:43

My Alexa is my everyday life with child in tow handbag. It fits a surprising amount of kids' junk in it including spare outfit and snacks and plastic dinosaurs. It looks great with no looking after. I won't mind it getting battered and worn though (I think of it like battered old Converse that are nicer worn in, but that's because I use it as an everyday day not an evening handbag.
