Does lipstick look best with lip-liner?

Oh dear, I feel very 1980s here. I just went to the beauty counters to find a new lipstick and lip- liner. I forced myself to ask at Benefit first, as they look young and trendy. But I could feel my gaze sliding over towards Estée Lauder and Chanel counters. I'm 37 so surely too young for that look.

Benefit don't even make lip- liner. So I bought what they sold, just to try it out.

It left me wondering if the lipstick with lip-liner look is a bit ageing and old fashioned?

There are two ways of looking at this. I am in my early 60s and have never used a lip-liner. Possibly because it is a bit of a faff and I have never felt the need. There used to be a look with a liner darker than the shade of colour and I do think that is a bit dated to say the least.

My daughters, aged in their 20s, are keen on it for lip plumping reasons..... So it is pretty up to date if you want fuller looking lips without injections. More or less the same colour as the lipstick or a bit darker. Not sure where they buy it but a Benefit is a younger range. Urban Decay, Mac or Bobbi Brown maybe?

I started using lip liner a couple of years ago when my lip line started to become a bit...fuzzier (early 40s now). Makes a big difference when wearing strong colours. Always the same colour as the lipstick, NEVER darker. It's not about seeing the lipline, just giving a crisper effect overall.

I often cover my lips with lip liner and but lipstick on top, it's really long lasting so I keep colour on my lips between lipstick applications and stops me having a line around my lips.. I wear a lot of pink and like Chanel pretty pink

It's because I'm 60 that I don't wear lip liner. Time is far too short for that kind of fandango.

Lipsticks in pencil are the way to go.

I wear lip liner as it makes my lips look larger, I go very very slightly over the lip line from the edge of the Cupid's bow to the corners of my lips. I usually use the same colour of liner as my lipstick or very slightly darker, I usually fill on my lips with it too or use it after lipstick for a crisp edge.

Barry M make a fantastic clear lip liner. I've been using it with all sorts of lipsticks, including tinted lip balms. It does help the lips look more defined without running the risk of having that darker liner look when the lipstick fades.

I use liner in the same shade as I've noticed the definition around my lips is fading with age. I like strong reds so same as Luck, I apply it over the lip underneath my lipstick and makes the colour really last.

Early 60s here. Used it for the first time about a year ago. Thin lips and they need some definition and it gives me about 0.5 mm extra lip to add lipstick to. Matched to the lippie (same brand- Bobbi Brown.)
Young and full lipped peeps don't need imo.

I use a lipliner for the purposes of making the edge of the lipstick the shape I want it. My lipsticks and crayons are too wide to get the shape precise.

It's not visible.

Keeps the lipstick from bleeding and help define lip line, which ax already pointed out fades with age.

I just use a lip liner that matches my natural lip colour. Too expensive to be buying individual liners for each colour.

As pp's have said it does give a better finish with darker lipstick.

Tbh I often pop on some liner - all over my lips -and some lip balm and forgo the lipstick.

I use a flesh-toned lipliner when I am wearing tinted gloss to prevent feathering. I do not use it when I wear lipstick. I'm in my mid-forties.
