Dyeing my hair like Holly Willoughby's

Hi, are there any hair experts who can help me please? I have naturally mousy coloured hair. I generally have blonde highlights but I never feel happy with the result. I'm thinking of going all-over blonde using Garnier Nutrisse. I really like Holly Willoughby's hair and she uses Garnier Nutrisse. I wouldn't dare try to dye it myself but would go to a salon. What I would like to know is:

a) I've just had some hightlights done. They are blonde with a chocolate brown (which I don't like, as the hair stylist put too much brown in). Can I put a blonde hair dye on now, or do I need to wait a while for my highlights to fade?

b) Is Garnier Nutrisse generally considered a good hair dye by Hair Stylists?

c) If I find an all-over blonde looks a bit too unnatural on my hair, can the hairdresser then blend in some darker tones afterwards?

Thank you

I'm not saying Holly definitely goes there, but the majority of celeb blondes have it done at Jo hansford or Percy and Reed

She has to have used the product for the purpose of the advert. The ad will be shot around 2 months prior to broadcast / print. She'll have had the colour professionally applied for the ad campaign (shooting of).

She will not be using Garnier box dyes on a regular basis.

Thanks Maud. I wish I could find a hairdresser like yours as she sounds great!

Sleepfree, I generally have two or three colours in, using foils. I had highlights back in November and the hairdresser did a pretty bad job in my opinion. Just used one colour - a brassy blonde and it looked horrible. I was just about to move house and didn't have time to go back and complain. I had my hair highlighted again last week. I asked the stylist to add some darker shades to break up the colour and make it less brassy. She did that, but IMO she put too much dark in and it looks a bit of a dull, almost greyish colour. The picture I have attached of the woman with the long hair is the one I showed the hairdresser. It's ended up looking more like Linda Robson's hair in the second picture.

Part of the reason I was considering an allover blonde, was because I'm fed up of not getting the result I want from highlights. Maybe I just haven't found the right hairdresser yet, I'm not sure.

In my experience, if you want a good blonde, you really have to be prepared to pay. Quite a bit.

SleepFreeZone · 15/04/2017 14:39

Oh it's so so difficult to get right, I feel your pain as I had the most brilliant mobile hairdresser who moved away and I'm now trying replicate the colours with a new hairdresser and it's painful.

I'm also at a disadvantage because my hair is probably 50% grey and naturally curly (messy) so it's difficult to ever make it look smart.

I know there are shampoos that can help with brassy tones and ones that help lift the blonde slowly. I've just tried to take a photo of my hair to give you an idea of the colours. It looks a bit shit but quite naturally shit I think 😜

Thanks for sharing your photo Sleepfree. I like the colours in your hair. They suit your complexion as you are quite pale. You're very pretty too!

I'm old so the pretty ship has sailed but I'm not ready to go grey yet 😬

CurlieSue · 15/04/2017 14:59

I disagree, you are quite a stunner and your face looks very young. I reckon you're younger than me - I'm 40 Smile

MrsDusty what sort of price should I expect to pay for a really good colour? When I had mine done last week at my local salon, I paid £45 for a full head of highlights. Should I be looking at around £70 to £100 do you think?

Last time I had highlights I was happy with, at least three years ago, I spent £350 in Birmingham with a trim and finish.

user1492232552 · 15/04/2017 16:47

Get them to add olaplex to the bleach too

Maudlinmaud · 15/04/2017 16:56

A full head for me costs around £100 sometimes £120 depending on whether or not I have a curly blowdry. Half head is about £70. I'm not in an expensive part of the world.

SleepFreeZone · 15/04/2017 17:21

I'm older than you 😜

I paid £55 for full head and cut but it was supposed to be half head, the lady just forgot. I think if you could go somewhere with a respected colourist you stand a chance of a good result.

Might be worth asking on your local Facebook pages for a recommendation.

Gingerbreadmam · 15/04/2017 18:19

op wash your hair with washing powder a few times and invest in some silver shampoo. once the dark has faded and the blonde brightened u shouldnt be far off the pic u wanted.

BounceBounceSplishSplash · 15/04/2017 18:44

I pay about £110 for a full head of highlights, a trim and blow dry. A half head which I get every other time isn't that much cheaper.

MrsDustyBusty · 15/04/2017 19:39

MrsDusty what sort of price should I expect to pay for a really good colour?

Well I finally came to terms with having to pay to have it right and this morning I paid €190 for a half head, cut and treatment. It actually is good, though. No orange.

lorelairoryemily · 15/04/2017 19:46

Hi sue, I'm a hairdresser.

  1. I would first of all suggest you let the lowlite fade before you go for a full colour. If you put a blonde hair colour over the lowlite it will probably go orange.
  1. No home colour is considered good by any hairdresser, holly may use it but she has hilites too, to break up the solid colour, and professional help to use the colour
  1. Yes it is absolutely possible to add a lowlite after going for a full colour if you find it too bright(and to begin with I can almost guarantee you will)

One last thing, are you prepared for the maintenance involved in being so blonde? If you want to post a pic I can help more!

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 15/04/2017 19:49

How Holly maintains her hair.

Supposedly!

Cherrypie32 · 15/04/2017 22:35

My hairdresser talked me out of colouring my hair like Holly's. In real life and without looking like Holly the essentially block blonde would look very fake and brassy. Plus root maintenance would be horrendous.

Cherrypie32 · 15/04/2017 22:37

And I absolutely don't buy that she doesn't go anywhere but a top salon with a celeb hairdresser. Why on earth would she home colour at any point, toner or root touch up.

squoosh · 15/04/2017 23:05

Because advertising standards mean she has to. It's really not that complex!

friskybivalves · 15/04/2017 23:10

She goes to Sinead Kelly's salon which is conveniently just round the corner from where she lives in SW London!

user1492232552 · 16/04/2017 05:21

Davina did the same thing when she was flogging it. Anyone noticed her hair looks great - since she stopped ;-)

WomblingThree · 16/04/2017 06:30

squoosh I agree in principle with what you are saying, because the ASA are so quick to pull adverts that break their code, or make companies alter them so the are not misleading.

It's just so hard to believe that a millionaire telly presenter nips to Savers to buy a box of dye, and then slaps it on in the kitchen, like us normal people.

I need to watch the advert in slow motion, and transcribe it, to see if she actually makes any claims at all, or if it is all inferred.
