I have to go to a smart charity evening where the suggested dress code is "speakeasy jazz".
Does anyone have the faintest idea what I can wear?

Gosh, how confusing! Haven't even heard of that expression. What about a cocktail dress or a simple and safe black dress? In fact, don't jazz musicians tend to dress in blacks and/or whites? I'd say go for smart black casual option.

DimpledThighs · 08/03/2007 16:31

no idea! But bet you aren't the only one in a quandry!

brimfull · 08/03/2007 16:31

blimey-wtf does that mean?

fashionsista · 08/03/2007 16:31

Cocktail dress would be fine, what have you got in your wardrobe

brimfull · 08/03/2007 16:33

I googled speakeasy jazz images and got this gorg outfit here

LucyJones · 08/03/2007 16:33

pmsl... i'm sorry but do you have to go? it sounds so poncey!

NorksDrift · 08/03/2007 16:36

I know-unspeakably poncey! but I have to go. My only real cocktail dress has a very definite waist so is not flapperish at all which is what someone else has suggested.

Gangsters and Molls-esque?

Is this in a club in London by any chance?

NorksDrift · 08/03/2007 16:40

No it's in bloody Claridges so I can't get away with something from the local fancy dress shop!

(asked because a friend of mine got all dolled up for someones birthday celebration in a pretentious club in London where you dress a bit like that...was bit irritated when they stayed there for about an hour then went on to a greasy-haired metal club so all looked right pillocks!)

fashionsista · 08/03/2007 17:21

ooh poor u. it has to be a beg borrow or steal unless you are going to pay out for something you might not wear again. If you go to quite a few events you could get something you are going to wear again

MrsBadger · 08/03/2007 17:28

it means 1920s gangsters and molls type

plain black cocktail dress with long beads and 1920s-type lipstick should do fine. Mary-jane type shoes with a strap thus also v appropriate and wearable-again.

Maybe a hair ornament or band (if they suit you) - VV Rouleax have fab stuff that is far removed from fancy dress.

NorksDrift · 08/03/2007 17:37

Thanks everybody for your feedback. Mrs B, what is 1920's lipstick? Do you think I can get away with my waisted black cocktail dress if I tart it up with beads and Mary-Janes?

1920s lipstick . You need a cupid's bow, with most of the lipstick in the middle of the mouth, iyswim.

JackieNo · 08/03/2007 17:43

Think 'Bugsy Malone', but with adults.

NorksDrift · 08/03/2007 17:50

I fear I'm going to end up looking more like Minnie Mouse!

try a dress agency where they hire evening dresses - you might get lucky
