How to wear skinny jeans after a lifetime in bootcuts

I'm 44, size 14 with a big bum and chunky thighs and calves. Bootcuts seem to balance this out more than slimmer cut jeans, but I know they're considered very "Mumsy" and unfashionable.

I want to try to wearing skinny jeans with ballerinas or Birkenstocks once the weather warms up, but how can I avoid looking ridiculous? Do I need to wear them with long tops or tunics that cover my bum?

They've been heralding the return of the bootcut for years. Still waiting

Bootcut makes me look short and fat (I'm pear shaped but not especially short), I've never understood how it's meant to be flattering. I suspect it's like pencil skirts i.e. not actually flattering on many people but so many people say it is this wisdom isn't questioned.

A slight flare from the knee is def the best shape for me - my thighs just disappear. But they're a faff to wear, especially as I don't do heels. I'm bored rigid with skinnies but I can't deny they're practical.

I always like it when jeans are at this kind of transitioning stage because there's no dominant style - pretty much anything goes. We really should enjoy it while it lasts.

The ones I see most often here are mom jeans.

I'm a similar age, shape, size and height to you OP. I wear straight leg jeans as an alternative to bootlegs. My "athletic" calves won't fit in skinnies! M&S usually have some straight/slim leg styles in.

Bootcuts can look frumpy but it depends upon how you wear them. I have always loved my diesel bootcuts and have always worn them. I do like skinny jeans too. I wear my bootcut - actually more like slim flares with converse type shoes and a tee. I think as long as you are not trying to 'smarten' them up with mumsy boots, they can look 'cool' and vintage :)
