Making the most of a once-in-a-lifetime shopping spree

My granny has got me a 2K gift card and a personal shopper appointment in Selfridges.
Apparently she doesn't believe in inheritance but does believe in the power of well cut clothes. I've recently got back to size 10/12, babies not babies any more, a few years off 40. To paraphrase - she wanted to get my mojo back and have the satisfaction of seeing me launched into the next decade looking fabulous.

Problem is - luxury stores are really not my natural habitat. Most expensive item of clothing I own is Levi's jeans; a lot is supermarket & second hand. I am a SAHM & wear clothes very hard - lots of time in the park with the kids etc. I am careless at laundry and never dry clean.

Can anyone guide me to where I should aim my unexpected windfall - so that the benefits really last? *

I am a bit scared of the prices - and a bit scared of wasting/ruining/mis-choosing stuff.

She has said I am expressly not allowed to eBay off my loot to convert it to cash Grin.**

Have a lovely day! I'm 32 and just bought a Coach bag - I also have a Mulberry Bayswater! I'd get a leather jacket, some expensive Breton stripe tops, a nice dress, ankle boots and some well-fitting jeans.

Your velvet trousers and Paisley shirt sound gorgeous. Please don't feel you have to give up on vintage because you're all grown up. I still wear it at 60, albeit different things in a different way.
I wouldn't bother with high end skin care, firstly because you presumably won't be able to afford to keep on buying it and secondly because in my humble opinion, it's all snake oil. Sun screen is the most important thing and doesn't cost that much. Same with make up if you don't wear it. Be yourself.
Have a lovely day.

I have:

Two pairs of funky jeans
Nice cross body leather bag
Leather jacket
Six tops

Feel a bit giddy (not just with champagne!)

Won't post pics because there are some fairly distinctive designs there!

But it's been lovely. Six hours in total - and much more comfortable and effective than DIY!

Brilliant! Sounds fab.

Were you happy with the personal shopper?

JoJoSM2 · 13/03/2017 10:41

Sounds brill ;)

Eggs the whole thing I'm starting to dub my 'Pretty Woman' day.

The lady was great. Spent absolutely ages with me. Not pushy at all - knew exactly what my budget was and stuck to it. And did the 'let me leave you alone' thing at the end to make sure I wasn't feeling crowded making final decisions.

First round of clothes was a bit beige and neutral for my taste - but she went out on the shop floor four times with & without me - and it converged towards a hipster Mum 'look' which through champagne goggles was kind of awesome.

A bit scared to wear the expensive clothes. I went a bit off piste from the game plan and ended up getting some floaty impractical and frivolous tops - which certainly wion't 'wear' - but do make a 'capsule' wardrobe (especially with a fistful of plain TShirts I got from Uniqlo the next day!)

I'm so pleased for you. I've been secretly hoping you would go for 'everyday fab right now' rather than some 'classic' pieces you 'should' own. Well done youSmile

HastyShopper · 14/03/2017 11:22

I must say - having done it with the shopper - I'm now of the opinion that this is the only way for big purchases.

Like you said, it was all concessions - so on my own I would have been worried about carrying lots of things around the shop - it is a massive store.

The shopper just swanned through grabbing whatever she liked yelling 'For the Red Room' over her shoulder - and the assistants couldn't do enough for her.

Then I had my own little dressing room where I could mix&match and compare - and have a contemplative sit down on a little arm chair with my champagne when it all got too stressful Wink.

And she had glossy-haired minions that scooted off to get different sizes.

That all sounds fabulous and exactly the sort of experience your Grandmother wanted you to have. Are you going to do a "fashion show" for her to show off all your lovely things?

HastyShopper · 16/03/2017 15:41

What a great idea Smile
