Can you help me choose which coat I should buy?

Im stuck between these 2 jackets, both navy.

the hobbs one or the joules one

I'd probably be wearing it for the school run, shopping etc. I work from home so dont need anything really fancy just sick of my old coat which is nearly falling to bits. I Like the idea of the belt on the hobbs one to make it a bit more polished, but also like the hood on the joules one.

I know there are millions more important issues in the world, but i've been dithering over the 2 of them since 9am. I don't live near enough to either shop to just pop in and try them on.

I sympathise. Every winter I swear I'm going to spend whatever it takes to find a coat with a hood that I actually like but I normally end up up with a piece of crap from TK Maxx. Last year I got a Barbour-ish one from M&S: belted and with a hood but only thigh length so of limited use.

I don't know why it's beyond the wit of a professional designer to come up with a coat that's both stylish and weatherworthy. I'm guessing they're just not interested.

Pearlmum1 · 06/03/2017 14:24

Hobbs!

Buddah101 · 06/03/2017 14:43

blueskyinmarch YES! I have 2 trench coats already, one m&s and the other Mint Velvet. Now i'm not going out to work I don't think i've worn either of them in a while. They do scream business - Possibly subconsciously i'm missing my work commute and getting dressed up rather than jeans and a jumper.

I did already know they had 20% off which is why i'm dithering. I still havent brought myself to order the Joules one either. I do agree though why can't designers just design a bloody coat that is waterproof, stylish, has a hood, and looks smart that doesnt cost the earth!

Im about to do the school run in my old Oasis pea coat soon that only has 2 buttons left on and it doesn't fasten Blush I need to make a decision pronto i guess.

They are both horrible and overpriced.

The only redeeming thing about the joules one is the hood, the hobbes one has a nice shape but is useless without the hood

Surely for that much money you can get better!

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2017 14:57

Hobbs one
Until recently I would have said the Joules one, but many a New Years resolution to stop wearing clothes that look like oversize toddler clothes.

Dancergirl · 06/03/2017 15:19

I really like both but agree that they have different functions.

If you already have 2 trench coats I would probably go with the Joules one, it has a hood and is more practical (but still nice).

EggsEleven · 06/03/2017 16:30

They're two very different style coats. I much prefer the Hobbs one. The Joules one would be good for trekking through fields or a wind swept beach, the Hobbs one day to day if it's not raining.

The Joules one would look better with trainers.

It depends on what you plan on wearing it with and for.

EggsEleven · 06/03/2017 16:32

Though if you already have 2 trench coats that you don't wear is there any point in buying another?

MorelloKisses · 06/03/2017 17:09

This really annoys me - why are so many (ostensibly rain) coats made without a hood?

I got so annoyed last year thag M&S had only hoodless StormWear coats and trenches that I Tweeted them (so that will show them).

This is no help for you but DP fpund me the holy grail as as a surprise Christmas present - a waterproof trench with detachable hood and detachable lining! It is a black michael kors one, which isn't a brand I love, but this one is black, not bling, practical and stylish.

I just can't believe more serviceable coats aren't available!

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2017 17:22

Serviceable, waterproof, hooded rainwear - check out outdoor/travel brands like Rohan, Patagonia and Merrel. They don't all make you look like you're about to go up a mountain! Also Seasalt.

bojorojo · 06/03/2017 17:43

I suggested Seasalt yonks ago upthread. I have a knee length, waterproof raincoat with a hood from them. It will last for years! What is the point of buying a raincoat that is a bum-freezer just because it has a hood? If you need something that is knee length and does the job, go with an outdoors specislist manufacturer.

Buddah101 · 06/03/2017 18:31

I don't need knee length, I'm mostly in the car so the odd occasion my legs do get wet is very rare. I'm not overly in love with the joules coat and as we've discovered the hobby one is pretty but not practical for what I need it for, so I'm back to square 1.

If anyone can recommend a short jacket preferably in navy/ grey let me know. I'm not a fan of sea salt to be honest, tried a few on before and the style just isn't me but thanks for the recommendation.😊

I like these, not sure it's what you're after but they are practical:

BabbleLands · 06/03/2017 18:41

How about a Barbour parka?

thepatchworkcat · 06/03/2017 18:41

I've got one of the parkas but maybe the mac would work for you?

ChocolateSherberts2017 · 06/03/2017 18:42

Hobbs it looks classier whereas the Joules looks casual and fun.

MorelloKisses · 06/03/2017 18:51

Those Protected Species ones are LOVELY!

Madbengalmum · 06/03/2017 18:56

Hobbs one, joules one is ugly imho.

Buddah101 · 06/03/2017 19:11

The protected species ones are nice (if a little pricey for me, was only looking at hobbs as they had an offer on) but saying that as already mentioned I have 2 trench coats already so don't really need another, but thanks.

I have 2 friends who have Barbour jackets, I dont love the labels on show, same reason I wouldn't think of Michael Kors, there are too many fakes of both brand - plus they're actually out of my price league!

All I want is a short jacket that I can wear with boots/converse, look a bit smart and also d the school run in. does not have to be for winter, just want a jacket I can wear in spring - Does such a thing exist?

This any good?

TowerRose · 06/03/2017 21:27

I know someone with the joules coat and it looks really nice on Smile

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2017 21:57

I had a previous version of that FF jacket and it is not waterproof. It doesn't say anything about being waterproof in the write up for it at all.
