Do some people just have chapped lips and there's nothing to be done about it?

I have revolting, peeling, chapped, dried-up lips. Always have. They are like mummified filo dough. I drink gallons of water, so that's not the problem. I exfoliate every couple of days.

Products I've tried:
Carmex pot
Nuxe Reve de Miel
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream
Lanisoh nipple cream
Burt's Bees
Laura Mercier lip something or other
Various hydrating oils (anything from stretch mark oil to coconut oil)

I've also tried not using any lip balm at all in case I've become some sort of addict. That didn't work either - after a week or two they got so bad they were bleeding.

I don't have dry skin anywhere else (if anything I'm over-oily). Is this just how my lips are and I have to live with it? I feel sorry for my DH who has to kiss my awful crackly mouth. Is there any magical thing I haven't tried yet?

I'm the same. I'm overall a very dry skinned person with psoriasis on my scalp and various lizzardy patches

Shit innit :(

Try switching toothpastes. I found I was allergic to an ingredient in mine and it cleared up...

SparklingMonkey · 03/03/2017 10:34

Have you tried Vaseline? It's the only thing that helps with mine, and all other lip products seem to make it worse somehow!

FauxFox · 03/03/2017 10:35

Blistex MedPlus (little blue pot) is magical. Stings a little bit but absolutely works.

BipBippadotta · 03/03/2017 10:51

Interesting re: toothpaste! Which do you use now, Onawheel ?

Have tried vaseline, and unfortunately it just seems to make things worse. Will give Blistex MedPlus a go.

Seconding changing your toothpaste. My lips were knackered for years before I worked out what was causing it. I use Ultradex now - pricey but worth it.

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 · 03/03/2017 11:10

The body shop hemp lip balm.

Both hand and foot balm good too!!

OdinsLoveChild · 03/03/2017 11:13

I use Lanolips Lemon Lip treatment. Its expensive but it lasts for ages and works really quickly.
I don't know if it will help as you say you have already tried lansinoh but it may be worth looking at as the ingredients are different in the lip treatment to the nipple cream.

You can buy it in Waitrose I think but heres a link for their site. www.lanolips.com/product/lanolips-lemonaid-lip-treatment/

I'd try a fluoride free and SLS free toothpaste. I used to use one from the Green people (it's got a bit better recently so I'm not). Maybe try no toothpaste for a few days if you can bear it?

Onawheel · 03/03/2017 11:45

I used to use oral b or Colgate and have now switched to sensodyne. When it was really bad I used Jason's toothpaste until it healed.

I seem fine with sensodyne but one brush with oral b tips me into chapped territory again. I can tolerate Colgate for a few brushes and then it starts to chap my lips again.

I am amazed at the diff switching toothpastes did tbh. Also a lot less ulcers since...not sure if there is a connection?

Cornflake15 · 03/03/2017 11:55

Its the Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS) in toothpaste that causes mouth ulcers. SLS makes the toothpaste frothy but if you are sensitive you need to find a brand without SLS. Its in shampoo and body wash etc as well so you might want to stop using any products that contain it.

CharminglyGawky · 03/03/2017 12:00

I'm similar, hadn't though about toothpaste but it took me years to work out I'm allergic to face wash Hmm tried lots of different ones all with the same result. I now wash my face with baby wash and it is sooo much better.

Also think about what you eat and drink, if my lips are sore I tend to avoid anything acidic or spicy which helps and orange juice can only be drunk very occasionally and not if my lips are already sore or they will be cracking and peeling by the end of the day. Straws are good as well.

Burts bees is the best lip balm I've found and I have tried lots, it has to be the honey/waxy one though as the others don't work for me.

GoAndAskDaddy · 03/03/2017 12:02

You need to try Sudocream! (When home alone😬).

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/03/2017 12:39

My DS suffered from mouth ulcers-we changed to Biotene toothpaste.
Says on label for people with dry mouth although that was not why he started to use it it might help with the dry lips?
He doesn't get ulcers any more. I buy on Amazon-not cheap but so worth it.

imjessie · 03/03/2017 14:06

Blisteze is the answer ,put it in at night over the edge of your lips , lots of it .. use every day and every night !

Get your bloods done, my chapped lips were caused by anemia....

FunkinEll · 03/03/2017 14:30

I use aloedent toothpaste which definitely helps but I'm still prone to dry lips especially when the weather changes. I'm still not sure if it's something I'm eating that affects them though.

BipBippadotta · 03/03/2017 14:33

Ah, now that's interesting, I've always been borderline anaemic. But I've been taking iron supplements for years so that shouldn't be causing too many problems at the moment. Hm! Off now to buy non-foaming toothpaste!

Will try all of these suggestions one at a time so that if anything works I will know what it is!

Blistex is the only thing that works for me.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 03/03/2017 15:26

Hi, I recently came across a brand called Eau Thermal Avene. I used their 'cicalfate restorative creams' when I had a strange irritation on my face and it worked wonders, so I thought I'd give their lip cream a try (see pic). It's really good - a lot of lip balms just sit on the surface but this really sinks in and it's healed my chapped/bleeding lips in a few days. I recommended it to a colleague who has much drier lips than me and she also likes it a lot. It costs £6 I think, from a larger Boots store. Might be worth a try.

thedevilinablackdress · 03/03/2017 16:00

Lush lip scrub (once or twice a day) followed by the Nuxe lip balm worked for me.

Bambooshoots14 · 03/03/2017 16:04

Silly one but do you lick your lips a lot? I found if I'm doing diy my lips get really chapped and I've realised it's when I'm licking them when concentrating Grin

IfeelFloopy · 03/03/2017 16:08

Using anything containing petroleum jelly such as Vaseline or carmex will dry your lips out more and make them worse. I remember finding this out in a tiny little article in a magazine years ago. I always had sore lips. I switched to Nivea lip care essential and now never have a problem nor feel the need to constantly reapply!

Superintrovert · 03/03/2017 16:09

Nivea SOS lip relief is a good one for me
