What do we wear when the temperature picks up?

I've got a work trip to the balmy south tomorrow, and don't want to get caught out being freezing or roasting all day. Is a wool coat going to be a bit much?

I'm in the south. Yesterday I was out in London in only a jumper and a scarf, which was fine in the day but I got chillier once it was dark, but I run warmer and like the cold of the north! My friend was in a not huge coat and was fine. Your biggest coat might well be too big, especially if you're accustomed to the cold north.

Thanks - that's really helped! I just haven't a clue what to expect when there's no gradual acclimitisation.

I'd take a lightweight coat and a scarf

Maybe light layers as part of my outfit so things can come off/go on depending on the temperature

northernlites · 19/02/2017 09:47

Probably not a big coat situation
How about a wrap or light jacket?

DavidPuddy · 19/02/2017 12:24

Love the idea of gradual acclimatisation needed just going north to south. Is the temperature change so different? I've not lived in the UK for a few years, so excuse my ignorance.

MorelloKisses · 19/02/2017 12:38

Baffled by this!

Just check the weather forecast! The variation north to south is not as big as the day in day fluctuation.

I'm currently in london (central) and it is 9 degrees, the BBC tells me it is 11 in Sheffield and 10 in Edinburgh.

How North are you?

BabyHamster · 19/02/2017 15:38

Unless you mean Gibraltar, surely there really won't be that much difference?? I regularly travel north for work and it's never occurred to me to take different clothes than I'd wear here.

I think there is a bigger difference in the summer when I can get away with jeans and jumper for most of the summer in Glasgow but would perspire sightseeing in central London and on the tube in high summer.

I would take a mac or blazer and scarf if I was going to London this week.

Dreadfulidea · 19/02/2017 16:16

There's a big difference. I have to go to Manchester a couple of times a year and the difference in temperature and strength of sunshine is markedly noticeable.
I would check the weather. I find looking at those pictures of weather fronts more accurate than what the weather reporters actually say though.
Can I also say that it's bloody pants down here today after yesterday's heatwave.

missyB1 · 19/02/2017 16:24

Definitely a difference! When I travel from south west up to Liverpool to see friends I always feel much colder up there.

northernlites · 19/02/2017 17:07

It's big coat weather most days up here at present, not because of the actual temperature but the arctic wind chill that comes with it Confused
