What to wear to give a lecture

Hi - looking for advice/reassurance!

I'm giving a lecture at a university next week and just heard it's going to be filmed (!). So I'm much more aware of what I'm going to be wearing.

I usually try not to be too formal, so was thinking loose white shirt, smart dark jeans, navy blazer.

What do you think? Too casual?

If you are going to be filmed, wear something tailored. You can end up looking very shapeless on camera!

Ive been filmed for lectures and its either even from the chest up or I've been behind a podium. Just make sure you are comfortable, don't wear black next to your face if it washes you out and make sure your makeup is very slightly bolder than usual.

Nothing you need to pull up, down, fiddle with or adjust.

That's pretty much what I wear for lecturing. Maybe a silky scarf to add a bit of colour?

A very practical note and apologies if obvious - If you will be (or if you don't know!) using a clip-on microphone with battery pack, rather than a podium microphone, then something you can clip them onto - v-neck top or cardigan for the mic, pocket in trousers for the battery pack. This has caught me out before! Whoever chooses tech for lecture rooms on my campus thinks all lecturers are men wearing suits and ties I think.

I wear whatever I'm comfortable with for lectures (even if being filmed). I do always wear makeup for them and usually keep my hair tied up to keep it from flying away. I try to never watch it again!

Some you have worn before so you feel comfortable. Not the time for something new.

The university isn't really the issue in terms of casual; it's the audience.

If it's students, jeans are fine. If it is the Chancellor and academic dignitaries, I would think that jeans are too informal and go for smart trousers or a suit.

It's a lecture to students so nothing overly-formal. Good point about the microphone!

Good luck! The only thing I'd add is nothing jangly or distracting like huge earrings or clattering bracelets.

I'm a lecturer. Today I wore black skinny jeans, a cream blouse with a black print, and a black crew-neck jumper over the top, plus flat black Chelsea boots. At this time of year I pretty much wear a variation of this, or short-ish a-line skirt, crew-neck jumper, opaques and flat boots. I teach a creative subject so tend not to be particularly smart, whereas people who teach in more formal areas - eg, law - tend to be more suited and booted.
