Tunics and leggings/skinny jeans....sorry but I just don't understand!

What is nice about this look? Surely only lanky leggy teenagers can pull this one off? Surely anyone over 30 MUST avoid?! Am becoming very tired of the rapidly changing fashions these days - "boyfriend" trousers one minute, tunic tops the next - can't we just bring back good old-fashioned elegance? Am I getting [whispers] old?

In my opinion only the very slim can actually carry off the skinny jeans/tunic combo & those who are not look terrible regardless of age!

hatwoman · 26/02/2007 22:24

leggings and skinny jeans are yesterday. according to today's Guardian. high-waisted flares are where we should be...

I'll just stick to me bootlegs.

Molesworth · 26/02/2007 22:25

I'm sorry but high waisters really are unflattering to those of us who are flabby of middle

hatwoman · 26/02/2007 22:33

in its defence taht's exactly what the Guardian said

pearlsasinger · 26/02/2007 22:34

I must be nearing old age, in the 80s I lived in doc martens and customised jackets, in the nineties, new age tunics and crystals, now I just want to live in pretty flowery dresses of a decent length, sip tea and name my children Violet and Pearl...

Molesworth · 26/02/2007 22:37

I might as well give in to the inevitable crimplene slacks

MakemineaGandT · 26/02/2007 22:58

Hmm.....it's not that I'm ready for a comfy middle-age fleece, a functional haircut and a pair of sensible shoes, it's just that I don't want to wear the same things as a teenager! I'm a grown up woman, with children, a husband and a grown-up life! I think I should look like a sophisticated adult with grown up clothes to match. Nothing too serious, just well fitted flattering trousers, elegant dresses, smart boots, jumpers in decent fabric etc etc. I have a decent figure, don't look too haggard(!), get my hair done etc etc - so why do I have a lurking feeling of frumpiness for not wanting to wear "chartreuse" (a horrid colour IMHO!) or start traipsing round in sparkly silver ballet pumps?!

Well if it makes you feel any better I'm 34, single & childless & still feel I'm in a bit of a Fashion menopausal state!

RosaLuxembourg · 26/02/2007 23:25

The Guardian article showed exactly why highwaisters are such a bad idea - the author was brave enough to be photographed in hers and they really made her hips and thighs look huge - and she normally looks lovely.
Am having a similar style crisis - my last few purchases have been from Topshop - as I will be 43 on Wednesday this must surely be wrong - but where else to go?

Molesworth · 26/02/2007 23:28

I suspect the 'right' look for we women of a certain age is probably summed up by jigsaw

I can't afford jigsaw though

Lucycat · 27/02/2007 13:49

Now you see I like chartreuse, having blondish hair and green eyes, it's a colour that actually makes my skin look alive in February!

agree with the ballet pumps though - having size 7 narrow feet, they make them look like coal barges.....

gingermonkey · 27/02/2007 14:15

Molesworth, I am slim (according to DH's family I'm skinny but that's another argument). Anyway, I'm 5' 9" and a size 10, and those high waisted jeans (whether flares or skinny) look an absolute bugger on me. I try them on just for a laugh now. They make your arse look HUGE and flat and when you sit down you get rolls of flab (which are actually fabric) even when you don't have any. Whoever thought of them in the first place is evil

ps I wear skinny jeans and I'm 32 next week, but not tunics because they make me look preggers

marthamoo · 27/02/2007 14:17

But if high waisted trews look awful on a woman with a tummy and hipsters look awful on a woman with a tummy...what am I supposed to wear?

I'll punch anyone who says crimpelene slacks with an elasticated waist.

gingermonkey · 27/02/2007 14:22

Dresses?

ScottishThistle · 27/02/2007 14:24

Ordinary waisted trousers!
