If you're 40ish, where do you shop for clothes?

I'm 39, fat, and style-free. I live in jeans and primark tops. But I'm determined that I'm not going to be fat at 40, and am on a losing weight/getting fit mission. A big motivation for me is the idea of wearing nice, stylish clothes that I love, rather than purely what fits me.

I'm having a browse online, but I have no idea where I should be looking. I wear a uniform for work so it's mainly casual clothes I need. Inspire me!

Hi,you mentioned jeans and tops,have you ever tried Crew Clothing,casual but smarter and things tend to be arranged to look good together,so makes outfit buying easier.Also I like Seasalt which is a clothes company based in Cornwall,you,do have to buy online unless you are in that area.Gap do good basics and H and M and I like Monsoon for something a bit more special

Would you consider going to a personal shopper? John Lewis have good ones. They can work to your budget and you don't need to buy.

It's good to have a strong motivational reason to lose weight, such as thinking about a new wardrobe and getting excited about the possibilities!
I lost an amount of weight and I was surprised at how my preferences changed and I found myself drawn to pretty dresses and bright colours.
It seems to me that there is a large degree of flexibility and choice whatever one's age - take for example Mary Berry in her Zara floral blouson - I think it is less about the shop than one's personal style.
That said, it is nicer to spend more money for higher quality, fabrics for a better fit and longevity; M&S autograph are good for classic pieces with a bit of a twist, and you can still visit H&M and Zara for pretty tops and things to mix things up. Whistles is lovely and also LK Bennett.

Consider what suits your shape and size, and buy clothes that suit it. It doesn't really matter where it comes from, as long as it suits you (the compliments I get most is for a m ans top, very anti-mn!)

I've been looking at Fatface, Seasalt, Joules and White Stuff, I've seen lots of things I like, I'm glad I appear to be looking in the right places! Some great suggestions, I'm thing to spend a happy hour or so browsing

I shop in different places for different things. For jeans, All Saints, blouses/shirts, Topshop, knitwear, Whistles (usually in sales) and Warehouse, skirts, Oasis. I tend to wear dresses less at this time of year as I favour a-line skirt/jumper, but for dresses to wear with tights I like Warehouse and Whistles again, and for with bare legs I like midi length which Topshop and New Look do well.

I've lost the weight, 30kg+ of it, but I don't really shop any differently. TKMaxx,Primark, Sainsburys, Peacocks, I do like some slightly more expensive brands, Kew, Brora, vintage stuff, but I use Ebay for that and charity shops. I wear jeans a lot, but I'm lucky in that Sainsburys jeans fit me as if they were made for me. My budget is miniscule, but I don't find that an issue, if I had the extra money, I'd spend it on skincare not clothes.

Gap, H&M, Uniqlo for basics and the occasional fashiony item. Warehouse for dresses. Would shop in Topshop but don't have the cash these days to update my wardrobe often.

Sainsbury's will do the job for you until you have a better idea of your personal style - at minimum cost.

Outside work I almost always wear jeans - from gap, oasis or topshop.

Tops come from Zara, cashmere from flash sale sites, gap, oasis, banana republic, cos.

For work I like Reiss, Karen Millen, jaeger, banana republic, massimo dutti and Zara.

Wrap London, gap jeans, white stuff, jaegar outlet, baukjen, sea salt, shirts from Pink, Hobbs, very odd thing from Boden and Autograph, like once every two years.

I make quite a bit of stuff too.

Nearly 50 but I don't dress any differently to how I did ten years ago.

Seasalt for the plainer pieces, white company, hush, gap, jigsaw mainly. I'm a curvy 12 and 5'6", I find these fit my shape and are decent quality.

I'm 40 and the last few things I've bought have been from Hush, Boden, Whistles, Cos and French Connection, with a couple of party wear pieces from Oasis and New Look. I don't buy as much from Zara as I used to as I don't care for the latest styles. And I occasionally find a nice piece in TK Maxx. Uniqlo is good for basics and their cashmere is reasonably priced. Gap is still good for jumpers etc but I never pay full price as there's always some sort of discount going on. Banana Republic is nice in theory but tends to be a bit "BA cabin crew" when you see the clothes in the store.

Joules, Crew, Seasalt, M&S, John Lewis, Sainsbury's, TKMaxx, Monsoon. Joules dresses, in particular, last forever and are easy to wear. Good luck with the weight loss

Banana Republic have shut up shop in the UK - you can still buy online, though AFAIK.

I had no idea Banana Republic had shut up shop but can't say I'm surprised. It was quite overpriced for what it was.
