I do not want to have bastarding bloody rosacea!

I am so frustrated as I have recently got on top of eczema on my body and my skin on my face was looking good. But having recently moved to Spain rosacea seems to have been triggered by too much sun exposure (despite using factor 50 every day). I have had it for about three months. It is getting worse not better.

Will you help me with advice about what works? Is there anything I am not considering? From my experience with eczema I am prepared for this to be a long road but I am desperate to get rid of it.

I have been to see a dermatologist and he gave me rozex which has been hopeless and a factor 100 sunscreen. The out break I currently have is the worst and longest yet, so I am not happy and have another appointment for the end of February.

I have worked out that alcohol is definitely a trigger. I spent four weeks not drinking then had a couple last night and woke up like someone had been at me with a blowtorch. I am fed up at the idea of not being able to have a drink now and then but I guess I will have to take that one on the chin.

I use CeraVe products for cleansing and moisturising. I don't use hot water. I am frightened to try any new products in case it triggers a reaction and I waste my money.

I am testing out some new foundations but again this is really tricky without wasting money. I am extremely pale and don't live in a big city so not much access to beauty counters. Double wear, which seems to be recommended a lot is too dark for me even in the palest shade.

I really want to know if this is something I am going to be able to get on top of or if I will be forever wrangling with it. I was so happy to have overcome my eczema and I feel a bit defeated by this. I would really appreciate any advice or experience you could offer.

I found that twice daily cleansing of my face with a Clarisonic (for extra thorough cleansing) before applying a topical anti-parasite cream got rid of sun-induced redness for good. A good dermatogist should prescribe anti-parasite antibiotics (metrodiazonale) in oral and topical form but the very thorough cleansing is a must.

metronidazole

Riversiderunner · 29/01/2017 10:25

Yes shinynew my dermatologist who I went to specifically because she's meant to be one of the best ppl to deal with rosacea also recommended Cetaphil. Haven't tried it yet as she recommended something else I already had but am going to buy the Cetaphil face wash when that runs out.

margaritasbythesea · 29/01/2017 15:38

Thanks again for your replies. It's all very helpful.

I used to use cetaphil and may go back to it. The CeRave stuff is similar but has things like niacinamide which I wanted before because I had a tendency to redness. I don't know if it is time to cut them out now or not really.

It's great to have a GPS perspective shinynew. I will persevere.

Bobochic - I have been looking at the Clarasonic cleaners and notice that Clinique do something similar. I'm wondering if the cheaper versions would do.

I have lots of things to try. Now I just have to resist drowning my sorrows in a g and t and carry on.

TBH I'd give in now and buy a Clarisonic. You'll save so much money on skincare down the line.

Look up demodex. Tea tree products are very good.

Beautifullymixed · 29/01/2017 21:11

My rosacea loves the ordinary 2% retinoid, it calms and soothes it down beautifully at the end of the day.
I also use nip and fab extreme pads as well. They help to fight the acne, or irritated pimples.
I also love hada labo premium hyaluronic lotion and my beloved mizon snail recovery gel. These soothe and smooth like a dream, and I dearly love them both.

I have had a horrible time with my rosacea since Christmas, and I'm utterly fed up. I have had some horrible pustules, pimples and tight, red skin.
I'm going to ask my gp to try soolantra. I'd never heard of it, before now, but this is the second thread I've read about it. I just want lovely skin. Sad

I really feel for you as I had this in my 30's. For my 40th, I signed up for monthly IPL treatments and after a year I was Rosacea-free. I still have top ups once a year but its not come back. Might be worth a go. I was prescribed beta-blockers at my worst and they sort of helped but I didnt want to rely on them.

NerdyBird · 30/01/2017 03:16

I use dermalex rosacea cream. I've never been formally diagnosed as I just can't be bothered (took years for GP to give me anything useful for acne). It costs a bit and I don't know if it's available in Spain or if you would have to order via the UK. For makeup I like mineral powders and use LilyLolo. They do cheap testers, but you'd have to check if they deliver to Spain. I have ulcerative colitis which is possibly linked as it's an inflammatory condition.

It really does seem that different things work for different people. Thanks for all your replies.

I am wondering if I do manage to get on top of it during the winter, will the sun not just trigger it again. Life here is pretty unbearable in the summer if you don't spend most of it on the beach. Sounds like a luxury but it's not it's survival!

I can't use SPF I find it's hugely triggering. Invest in a wide brimmed hat?

shinynewusername · 30/01/2017 08:23

Have you tried physical sunscreens (titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) as well as chemical SPFs, Dame? Lots of people who can't get on with one type are ok with the other.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/01/2017 08:31

Lily Lolo is great,I second that!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/01/2017 18:03

I find a course of lymecycline works, but I'm not overly keen on using oral antibiotics for something superficial (yes, I do know it's horrible to have, but its not exactly an illness, is it). But I'd found rosex or finacea (azaelic acid iirc) not terribly effective- better than nothing but not that good. Anyway, discussing this with a new GP, he said, you do know you can use both as they have different means of action - anyway, I've been doing this since just before xmas and the combination does seem more effective.

Jmangel · 30/01/2017 18:12

I cannot urge you all enough to go and ask for Soolantra from your GP - seriously, no antibiotics, no fancy skincare, no need for make up. It is a miracle product and I had tried everything - diet changes, lymecycline, doxycycline, roaccutane, metronidazole gel, finacea, rosacea care skin range, prosacea. Everything. My rosacea was so bad I didn't want to leave the house.
Go and get Soolantra.

Nearlyadoctor · 30/01/2017 19:05

Soolantra - worked for me after trying everything else. Active ingredient is Ivermectin which kills the mites on the skin.

Beautifullymixed · 30/01/2017 22:30

GP appointment it is then! Soolantra sounds amazing, I hope I can get it prescribed, and it works for me.
I have some bad scarring from my latest bout of rosacea. Pustules, pimples, rough inflamed, sore, red, tight skin, does not a good look make. Sad

SleepFreeZone · 11/12/2017 22:03

I think the problem with rosacea has d everybody seems to have a different version of it. That's why there isn't one answer.

I only have the flushing component. Otherwise my skin is clear. Nothing really seems to help that unfortunately and most doctors hVe told me over the years that it's something I have to live with and accept.
