Hair dye. How do you find the next shade down?

Totally clueless here. Back in November I dyed my grey hair for the first time in about 25 years. All good, I really liked it, no disasters. But this time I want to go just a shade lighter but I thought it was as simple as just looking at the next shade down but it doesn't seem to work like that. How do I find the next lightest shade? (Clairol Nice and Easy in case it matters).

You need to go up a shade not down. Find the colour you used and the next one should be a shade lighter.

Sometimes on the instruction leaflet in the box there is a chart of the shades, have a look at that. Failing that call or email clairol.

See I don't even know if I'm going up, down or sideways! Yes I will have to email them I think. I'll have a look on the box too. Thanks.

1 is black and it runs to 10 which is light blonde and some have numbers after a '.' to denote other tones e.g. Ash, red, blonde, etc. What was the number on the colour you used?

It was 8CB formerly 103B.

I need them to be called
dark blonde
A bit lighter
A bit lighter again
Medium blonde
A bit lighter than that
Still lighter
Light blonde
Lighter light blonde
Really light blonde
Stop!

You then need 9cb formally 11cb for a lighter shade.

Just 9cb i cant work out whay the former would have been.

So there will be other 8 shades with different tones or if you want lighter you could go to a 9 or 10. They don't seem to have a lighter champagne blonde though so you'd have to choose a different one

Thanks you two, that's really useful. So the letters are a variation on the shade and each shade is numbered? I didn't even know that 1 was darkest.

A normal colour will not usually lift a colour, you'll need a something with a lightener (bleach, but that's not a word most people like to use!)

When covering greys you'll be better getting a hairdresser or failing that at least a proper colour (not a box), and mixing with a 10vol developer.

Each shade is numbered, single number shades tend to be flat, double numbers are intense e.g. A 5 will be a flat light brown but a 55 will be a more intense/saturated colour, better for covering greys

Although as they don't lighten coloured hair much it might just be your roots that go lighter
