Grey Hair Fail...

user1484313858 · 23/01/2017 13:57

So I am having an ongoing issue with grey hairs... they started very slowly as these things do circa. about 25-27 years old, and now 32, quite grey in temple areas and a few sporadic ones appearing in the fringe/parting area etc. Not overly surprised as my mum went grey very young, so on that front I appreciate it could be worse.

I'm not bothered about the grey in principle, the problem is NOTHING covers them. I'm pretty dark haired/olive skinned which makes them more obvious for a start. I have used box dye for ages - maybe colouring with permanent colour 3-4 times a year. The issue is, after literally a week, the colour fades/washes off my grey hairs completely.

Further to this, in July this year I paid over £60 to have my hair coloured professionally at my usual salon (a reputable place) and the exact same thing happened. I called my hairdresser and she had me back in to re-colour (free of charge) and maybe mixed up something different, but the same thing happened again!!

I don't put my hair up any more because of the grey in my temples, and am at a loss as what to try. I can't just box-dye it every time the grey comes back as I assume this would wreck my hair very quickly, but I don't feel compelled to pay salon prices if the result is the same?

Any thoughts?

I henna mine, as other dyes didn't take well and henna has a conditioning effect. Only an option if you don't mind the grey appearing as reddish highlights, though.

Hey it's magic isn't it. And because only use quarter tube for my roots it's saved me a fortune, as well as mess free and better results than I ever got with box. I used box for over 20 years before I discovered this Shock

Have you tried this?:

Fab stuff! I have a hairdresser friend dye my hair every five-six weeks and after about week three my roots are starting to show so this keeps me going until then. I spray along my parting and around my ears (with a carefully positioned babywipe to stop it spraying in my ear!)

Key to grey coverage is a 00 after the point or an NN. So 5.00 or 5NN - you want a double neutral base so no other numbers after the decimal point other than a zero but not straight 5 - must be 5.00

Have just ordered some Majirel and the Oxydant peroxide stuff, am excited to try it. I'm 35 and stated getting a few greys coming through in my late 20s. My hair's still mostly brown but I'm getting more and more springing up along my parting and around my temples. I'm currently box dyeing it every 6 weeks or so but it doesn't cover all the greys for that long. I couldn't be less ready to 'embrace the grey', sod that, I hate them and if this Majirel stuff works and actually covers them properly for a decent length of time it'll make my 2017!

I had problems getting my due to last until I switched to
Sulfate & silicone free products. Sulfates can strip out the colour & silicone coats the hair & prevents proper colour penetration. At the moment I'm using Cowshed shampoo and John Masters conditioner, usually pick up at TK MAXX.

I use L'Oréal intense 77 which is dark blonde. I presume there is intense in the 44 range too.

I do admit I am a natural brunette but lightened my colour as it was too hard to keep up with the roots.

ImBrian · 25/01/2017 07:22

Mine is really dark and I've been going grey since I was 20 (36 now). I ended up going blonde for a while but the bleach was destroying my hair so now I get the ends tinted grey and I'm letting it grow out. It's in much better condition and I don't look any older.

Middleoftheroad · 25/01/2017 07:28

If you're going grey, go lighter - I did.
I know you don't like highlights, but what about a few just in the t-section?
Nice & easy hasn't covered my greys ever. I started to go grey at 19 and am partly white at 43. Not that I would ever let anybody see that thanks to highlights. Nice & easy is in fact the worst box dye for covering grey IMO.

Beastof, which oxidant peroxide did you order?

BeastofCraggyIsland · 25/01/2017 23:13

Ilook I ordered the one that's recommended on the page for the dye on the website, the L'Oréal Creme Oxydant: www.salonsdirect.com/loreal-creme-oxydant-20-vol-1ltr

I wouldn't have known I had to use it if not for this thread so will probably need further instructions when it arrives Grin

Thanks Beastof Smile

Hi I recently stripped my hair from dark brown/black as had so many greys...I went a light golden brown colour then when that washed out added some bronze high lights myself. Not the best idea I've had ,it's washing out now and I have so much grey hair coming through which I hate (I'm 43 ). Any ideas what I can do I do like being lighter but just stuck in the awful colour fade now xx
