Promised myself a lux watch for milestone achievement. Is this design going to age well?

It will be the most expensive thing I own. I've been trying to find a design for about a year, this ticks all my list items off, but would love opinions.

I've always had an omega and wouldn't swap it's quite plain so hasn't dated at all - a local watch repairer services it regularly
In answer to previous post about resale of jewellery - I have an eye for a bargain, always buy second hand jewellery usually vintage and regularly sell when I fancy a change or see something better - I have never made a loss!

Personally... I prefer the look of Ebel compared to Omega but it's all personal taste isn't it?

I bought mine as an investment piece, £3,600 over ten years ago after an unexpected opportunity to buy something special.

I think it's a fairly classic design, tbh, with no gimmicks. It's not to my taste (more bling than I care for), but it YOU love it, it'll serve you well for many years.

It's lovely and if you love it that's what counts.

You can get a lovely Cartier tank for that money or a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lady datejust... or something more unusual from omega or TAG or even IWC or Jaeger-LeCoultre.

I would have a really good look about. Reconditioned watches are where you really get the buy IMO. I have 4 vintage watches & all for under £2,000. I love them, watches are my passion.

If you love that watch, buy it.

I've had an Ebel since 1993 and still love it. It has stood up well to many years of everyday life. However at the moment I'm wearing a Fitbit which is not nearly so stylish.

I have two Ebel watches, they are very sleek, especially the Wave, compared to a Rolex which I find too chunky. I have the Classic Sport Wave in gold which is very slim and elegant, and a slightly thicker one in S.Steel with diamonds on the face marking the hours.
It costs about 160 stg for battery replacement, re-seal and service (I send thrm off to a place in Hatton Garden, much cheaper than E.J. ) but have only had them done twice in 20 years. And I wear them to swim in every day.
People notice them and comment very favourably (especially jewellers, for some reason)

Agree with those who say if you love it buy it. Who cares if it's not other people's style.

FWIW I bought a cartier about 11 years ago - have worn it nearly everyday since. I remember my SIL saying "fucking hell" when I told her what it cost - a lot less than your Ebel - but it makes me smile.

Buy it - enjoy it xx

Looks very nice OP!

I wonder though for that kind of money you could look at an automatic and not quartz-powered watch. That way you won't need to have the battery changed -- which ideally should be done by manufacturer but can cost a lot. Still if you're buying such a nice watch it's not worth it going to a dodgy watch repair shop. If battery replacement isn't done right it can damage the seals that make a watch water resistant.

However if you do get an automatic watch look up how many hours of power reserve it has (40+ hours is good) -- if you don't wear the watch that often it will stop.

This Tag Heuer appears similar to the one you posted, though of course pricier. The scratch resistant sapphire crystal face is a plus point.

Also, if you're thinking about an investment/something to last, then an automatic is better than quartz (battery) powered

It seems crazy to end up with a quartz movement at hat price point. Do ebel not do automatics?

I looked at loads including Ebel, Cartier and Rolex. Went for this in the end, Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra with diamond markers. I love it. And it's something I can pass down to DD.

Yes they do do automatics and I didn't realise that the one OP linked to was battery which would account for the price. Mine keeps perfect time, no battery, and it's wonderful not to have to think of a battery running out.

This is mine. Even ten years later I still look at it and smile.

Very interesting thread! Should you not spend £1000 on a quartz movement?

No just suggesting OP look around at other options in the price range suggested by her link, especially if she wants a classic watch that will age well

For that money I'd get an omega seamster or possibly one of the plainer ladies Rolex's...

May be a lit late OP however here's a link to Secret Sales. They have Ebel watches on offer today - with a further 20% the sale price !

You probably have to sign up, but it will probably be worth it!

Agree with PP, I wouldn't buy a watch from EJ at that price and it will age. Try a more known brand as mentioned and from a specialist, not EJ. weretaller I agree with you, not an investment these days.

I think that Ebel is a sufficiently well known brand. Brands like Rolex are more footballer than classic.

Sorry Ifonly I did wonder about posting but they are obvious - good marketing etc. Hope you are paid a Premiere League's salary for your knees Flowers.
