Actually hate make up

Hello, wondering if it's just me who hates wearing make up? I really dislike it, it's just something I feel I need to wear to look vaguely attractive. I don't wear a great deal, it is just something that I have become accustomed to. Has anyone given up makeup? If so, how long did it take you to get used to it?

I don't like makeup, but everyone I know wears it. I am the only person I know who never wears makeup!
Loads of people on MN comment on how people look dead, tired or like they haven't made an effort if they don't have makeup on.

If I say I don't like makeup I don't see why that is considered "sneery"; you makeup wearers are winning the argument hands down...makeup is the norm, and I am the weirdo Smile.

I don't get the perceived connection between 'wears make-up' and 'makes an effort' - effort for what? To achieve what??

I make an effort to be clean, smell nice (even if that smell is 'only' clean Grin) and generally try to be a good egg - I have lots of contact with people in difficult situations in my work and I do find that smiling and listening well are more important to how people respond to me than whether or not I chose to wear make-up.
I can totally see how that would be different in a corporate environment, but still think it is a shame that 'made-up face' equals 'normal' for many people, whereas 'no make-up' implies 'makes no effort' with all that entails (lazy, does not have pride in her appearance, careless etc etc).

Wear make-up or not, but just also let me wear make-up or not as it were!

I agree clara.

YY Pacific. Just because someone prefers not to wear makeup, they can still be "making an effort" to work hard, be a good friend, be polite etc. It's interesting how women's appearance still seems to be the first port of call for whether they have "made an effort".

Just take care of your skin, that's what really counts. Use thick evening creams and hydrating day creams, especially after showering.

BusterGonad · 28/01/2017 16:05

I respect people's views to wear makeup or not, I just don't feel that snidey comments necessary from the non makeup wearers. Live and let live I say, and keep you're sour opinions to yourself!
Pacific you sound lovely and your view points are spot on.

I don't wear makeup most days but I'm still young and look even younger so I might start to do so more regularly when I'm older. I know I look nicer with it on but I don't want to create an expectation then have people think I look really rough without it. I don't like the feeling of it either and loathe removing it.

I have quite doll-like features so I look about 12 with no makeup on, nice with a little bit on, and truly terrible with any more than that on. It means I can't experiment with looks or colours at all - the makeup I wear for a Tuesday morning meeting will be the same as I'll wear on my wedding day. I can't really have fun with it, it's just functional, so maybe that's why I don't much enjoy wearing it.

Oh God, I LOVE make up!

I've worn foundation since I was about 15. I have good skin but am terribly pale with purple under eye shadows ( family trait.) Without make up I look like death.

I also have very few eyelashes so my eyes just disappear with no mascara.

I am really jealous of women who have more rosy cheeks or some colour in their face and don't need make up.

I wear make up daily. It takes me 10-15 minutes and never IMO looks 'caked' or overdone.

As an absolute minimum I'd need mascara, foundation, concealer and blusher.

SuperFlyHigh · 28/01/2017 17:45

I know I look tired or can do without makeup on, apart from weekends when unless going out at night don't bother.

At work, always. Or almost always.

Sometimes tinted moisturiser (Caudalie Vinoperfect), sometimes a heavier foundation (Primark cream) or a lighter one (Lancome Cushion). Always Maybelline Dream Lumi for under eyes. Then mascara (either Clinique or Maybelline Cats Eye) and eyeliner, Bobbi Brown Hunter is a nice dark green almost black, sometimes grey eyeliner sometimes none. Blush is usually Lancome Blush subtile Cushion. Powder is Nars compact or Bourjois Poudre de Riz de Java. Add lip balm and lipstick, anything from MAC to NYX.

Colleague before when I wore makeup and didn't and asked her said when I wore it I looked "more glowy" but didn't look dire without it!

SuperFlyHigh · 28/01/2017 17:46

Also some women (a friend of mine) said she doesn't suit makeup. Makes her look not herself. Looks far better natural. Yet envied me my ability to smother myself (eye!) in dark kohl as a teenager!

hollinhurst84 · 29/01/2017 01:51

I wear shit loads. Mainly to cover up the purple dark circles and pale blue/grey skin tone Grin
I also have a mark under one eye from an assault which looks like a black eye if I don't conceal it but mostly I enjoy wearing it and being able to change my look daily. I don't judge if people don't wear it
