MUSLIM WEEDING OUTFIT DILEMMA

noonar · 23/02/2007 20:07

hi, my dad is getting married next week in marrakech. i have bought a linen, embroidered dress from monsoon, which has s kind of english rose/fifties feel. am now worried that the moroccan guests wont 'get' this look, what with their penchant for all things glittery and gold...what do you think?

i'd be esp glad of advice from anyone with experience of coping with culture clashes in this kind of situation.

(ps sorry if you've read this on my other thread. decided it didnt really belong there, so posted again.)

i feel really confused now. your advise is v sound. the dress is not actually black, and i have a flower to wear in my hair. v pretty for an english country wedding...but clearly not right here.

trouble is, i've not been to morocco since i was 15 and dont know them. i also have no time. we're off on thurs and i've got to work before then. i could do one more trip into town. the only places that have any spring like wedding oufits are monsoon and debenhams- which is full of mother of the bride outfits...aaaggghhh

if it's anything like turkey and middle eastern countries, then don't think "wedding", think black tie, unless they are an amazingly westernised family who have actually lived in a european city? Don't wish to be un-"pc", but a lot of my family would regard shalwaar as peasanty and not suitable for a wedding

noonar · 23/02/2007 21:00

ok, so my long olive green silk gown, silver sandals and silver sequin bag and pashmina might not actually be too much???lol

Really??

Scratch that idea then....

smittenkitten · 23/02/2007 21:01

don't know if you're joking, but probably not! Feel free to come back and beat me up if i've given completely the wrong steer!

smittenkitten · 23/02/2007 21:02

my message doesn't make sense - probably not 'too much', as in it sounds good.

noonar · 23/02/2007 21:04

its a beautiful dress smitten, but there's no way i'd wear it to a uk wedding! i wore it to a black tie function at a 5 star hotel. hadnt seriously considered it...

What you can do- if you have an Indian Sari shop or similar, if you take the dress in there they will most likely (all the ones here do) make you a pair of those narrow trousers to match for remarkably few pouns, then add a shawl or pretty cardi- easy!

And gorgeous!

Nikki76 · 23/02/2007 21:05

I've just googled Next Directory and gone into wedding gear - they have some fab pastel wedding suits - very elegant, covered and if get hot and are able to flaunt the cleave, can take the jacket off......dress up with bling shoes and sequined bag??

smittenkitten · 23/02/2007 21:05

i wouldn't have worn my outfit to a Uk wedding either, but it was just fine in the situation!

PeachyClair · 23/02/2007 21:06

And if you're scratching the outfit- go in and ask. My friend spent New Years Eve on the river Ganges (literally LOL in a boat)- go the most incredible outfit made to suit with their advice, really stunning and beautifully emnnroidered for not much cost, esp. for what it was. E bay also have sellers who would do the same, or I could get contact dtails for you

noonar · 23/02/2007 21:10

peachy, thats a really good idea.

nicki, do you mean the trouser suits? thought they were too 'officey'? no?

what about the pink sleeeveless dress?

would my pastel pink linen trousers, with floaty pink long sleeved beaded chiffon top be better, dyou think?

OP posts:
Nikki76 · 23/02/2007 21:14

I liked the dresses but was staying away from sleeveless....

I really liked the suits because the pastel colours make them sooo wedding style and very elegant....not at all officey, especially if dress them up with right acessories.

Pastel pink trousers with floaty chiffon top (wear a vest or cami underneath though) sounds a winner - you could always pack both and suss out the vibe when you get there?

Oooh - I just love giving outfit advice

noonar · 23/02/2007 21:16

ok, have just looked at some pics dad emailed us of another family wedding. dont know why i didnt think of it earlier!

it's jellabas (sp) in bright satiny fabrics, all the way. the bride dosent look disimilar to some pics of hindu brides that i've seen

geez, i am stick out like a sore thumb. think the pink trouser combo might be best.

Let us know how you get on! I'm going to Syria in a few weeks - have to get some more tops as too fat for most (all?!!) of my skinnky size 12 wardrobe (Nikki mourns for her old wardrobe) since gaining 4st during preg and I'm going to have a hard time covering cleave with these norks - one positive of having a baby!! Nice sized funbags!

noonar · 23/02/2007 21:25

nikki, you have been a huge help really got me thinking. am going to order a sequin bag to go with my pink outfit. its quite a similar look to the pink trouser suit in next. will feel more comfortable in that, i think.

Nikki76 · 23/02/2007 21:27

hi honeys, i'm home!

i had the most incredible time in morocco. the atmosphere at the wedding was totally electric. lots of music and dancing all in the most beautiful riad with olive trees in the courtyard. wow....

i went for the trouser suit in the end.

OP posts:
Nikki76 · 08/03/2007 19:46

Yay!! Did you feel in place etc??? Hope you didn't do any weeding.......

noonar · 08/03/2007 20:00

nikki, it was so out of this world. all my distant rels knew who we were even though i didnt know them. they were all so hospitable. it was overwhelming.

my mum lived there in the 60s and 70s and worked in a childrens home as a nurse. she was v charitable towards my dads v poor family. it was ammazing to hear that she's a bit of a legend, after all these years.

the outfit was fine. didnt stand out really. am glad i didnt go for 'evening dress'.

OP posts:
Nikki76 · 08/03/2007 20:16

Really pleased you had a good time. The hospitality never ceases to amaze me..its rubbed off on me now (my husband is from Syria) and whenever my English friends visit, they leave with a bemused look and left overs! lol

noonar · 08/03/2007 20:21

lol, nikki!

we have invited my 10 yo old cousin to stay. she's a real sweetie. her dad was killed in an accident a while ago, and i feel a bit protective towards her.

i guess it's rubbing off on me too!
