Yellow trousers - stylish or abomination?

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 15/01/2017 00:11

I can't decide. I'm seeing them through the lens of The Sartorialist. With a fitted grey or navy blouse or sweater and brogues. But am I mad?

yellow wide-leg trousers

I like these

This is also nice but personally I would have gone for a grey top etc., as I think black is too stark against the yellow.

More casual look.

DowhatIwanttodo · 15/01/2017 07:58

I'm not sure about them but bum looks really cool in them. She's does have a tiny waist and no hips though.

I wouldn't wear yellow trousers but I would love a yellow dress.

n0ne · 15/01/2017 07:58

I don't like those particular trousers but I have a pair of mustard cords from C&A (they still exist where I live) and I think they're great. Mustard definitely goes with grey but also brown so it's more versatile.

I'd wear canary yellow trousers on holiday but they do seem a bit weird in the UK/N Europe. That being said, the men in my adopted country seem very partial to them!

burnishedsilver · 15/01/2017 08:05

I was expecting to say abomination but no, I like them. I'm not tall enough or adventurous enough to wear them but on someone else they could look great.

humanfemale · 15/01/2017 08:30

They're a great shape but I personally think the yellow is too bright. Mustard /ochre can be styled up to look casual and wintry but those are brighter sunshine yellow. Great silhouette and love coloured trousers generally though.

ICJump · 15/01/2017 08:37

I had a pair of home made yellow flares when I was 22. I was inspired by a cartoon character in a Robbie Williams video clip. God I loved them. I'd get a pair again except I'm a size 20 and would look like mr tumbles side kick

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 15/01/2017 13:19

N0ne - I think it's the difference in the light. UK light is quite grey so brights don't look quite right. Abroad and in sunnier climes the colours look much better. I love C&A - it's my go-to place for fine knitwear which washes well and is great value for money. I deliberately take an empty case with me so that I can stock up when I go on holiday!

carrie74 · 15/01/2017 13:31

I like them and think bright yellow is a much better option than mustard! DMBL40 looks great!

LiefieLiefie · 15/01/2017 13:55

LOVE those green ones.

Agree with Dacre, that's why in autumn/winter, people are drawn more towards navy, berry, forest green, deep purple colours as they suit the natural palette of what's around them.

Coming into spring, those yellow trousers will be gorgeous with a white shirt.

Bluntness100 · 15/01/2017 13:59

I'm sorry I think they are awful. they are one step up from Rupert the bear. 😱

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 15/01/2017 14:00

You should definitely buy them,,,,, for a fancy dress party.

Floisme · 15/01/2017 14:50

I like them - very 70s. Smile. But they need to fit perfectly and be styled very carefully - like that woman on the Sartorialist will have done. Because as Cointreau says, if you wear yellow trousers then people are going to be looking at you so everything needs to be spot on.

BusterGonad · 15/01/2017 14:51

Just go for it Op, if you like them then wear them. They can look amazing on the right person, you've really got to be brave about your style and go for it, since you've lost the weight I'm sure your confidence is sky high and it's the confidence of knowing you look good that makes you able carry it off.

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 15/01/2017 14:56

I quite like the khaki ones - they have an interesting, land girl vibe about them.

koffeekoffeekoffee · 15/01/2017 15:11

Saw the thread title and knew it would be these... :P

Recently bought a pair, and plan to wear them with merino knits now (indigo, royal blue, fuchsia, pale grey) and cotton/silk shirts later in the spring (olive, white, shell-pink). They're definitely mustard/ochre irl, not sunshine yellow. The blogger a pp linked to looks fabulous, but a black top is too harsh I think. I'll be adding flat shoes and an LK Bennett leather belt - that hideous ring/rag effort has already been binned.

I'm (ahem) years old, tall, hourglass size 8, fwiw. Like strong and unusual colour combos (dark skin). Hardly ever buy clothes in M&S (as they're usually vile).

Acornantics · 15/01/2017 15:16

The navy ones are great; I love the yellow ones too, but I'd never wear them, the colour is just too...shouty.

The style is my go-to shape as I'm a 5ft 11 pear with smaller waist and wider thighs. Skinnies do absolutely nothing for me, but wide legged trousers are unfailingly flattering, especially in a drapey crepe or light wool.

koffeekoffeekoffee · 15/01/2017 15:22

Anyway, Robot, I think you should buy a pair, get them home and have a good old trying-on session with other stuff in your wardrobe. And if they look fabulous, get out there and strut Smile

IHeartKingThistle · 15/01/2017 16:54

I've ordered them!

Bloody Mumsnet.

CountFosco · 15/01/2017 23:35

Yay! Tell us how you get on with them. I'm short and can't wear yellow but love it so very jealous of those of you who can. But I do love a widelegged trouser for work worn with trainers (like Bum40).

BaronessBomburst · 15/01/2017 23:44

Hang on, OP, you went from a size 22 to a size 10?
How?!?!
I can't even get there from a large 12!

IJustLostTheGame · 16/01/2017 10:58

I have some original land girl trousers. They are a thing of beauty.
High waisted wide leg trousers are the best. I've just ordered some from the collectif sale and it's all I can think about.
I'd wear yellow ones, probably not those M&S ones, the legs aren't wide enough for me. But I don't think they're horrendous

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 16/01/2017 11:15

I've wimped out of the M&S yellow ones, and bought an Asos jumpsuit instead! i think I'll just keep an eye on eBay for my green Betty Jackson ones in a 10. koffee is swaying me back towards the abominations though.

IHeart let us know what they're like!

Baroness it's much easier to lose a lot than those last few pounds! I'm sometimes a 12, depends what/where. I really just cut out snacks (ahem not entirely), no breakfast, no more meals based round large quantities of bread, pasta and/or mashed potatoes Grin. If I want to drop a pound or so (or to lost the 5 pounds I put on over Christmas) I really cut back on the carbs and have lots of eggs and vegetables instead, it always works.

OP posts:
IHeartKingThistle · 18/01/2017 22:28

They're here. And... I don't think I can keep them! Colour is nice, fabric is nice, really comfy. Fit round the waist but MASSIVE over my crotch area! Paper bag top is a bit fussy. Belt is awful and it does look better with a different belt but I don't think I'd have the guts to step out the front door in them, and I step out in all manner of strange things! Should have listened...

IHeartKingThistle · 18/01/2017 22:29

But now I am on the hunt for the perfect pair of coloured wide leg trousers...
