Help me help DD find her style

DD is almost 13 and has spent the last 5 or 6 years in big baggy boys clothes.

She is just starting to be interested in slightly more feminine clothes or at least things that fit (rather than swamp).

We are off for some winter sun Feb half term and I don't know what to suggest for summer stuff. She will wear (longish) shorts but some nice tops would be fab and I'd love to chuck out some horrid old boys tshirts.

Any ideas where to look? Must be navy or maybe green/grey colours and nothing too fitted.

Teen girl stuff is often so skimpy I don't really blame her not liking it!

She's v tall and pretty slim if that makes a difference?

I was a tomboy for a very long time so I feel her pain. Every small step of change made someone remark about it which would send me shooting off to the comfort of my old 'boy/baggy' clothes!!

I got there in the end though not til late teens for more fitted tops and skirts/dresses not til my 20's!

I remember being so unconfident in my image I just wanted clothes to hide in. My mum having a go at me for wearing boy's /mens stuff didn't help. Would she wear lightweight baggy trousers, fitted but not tight T shirts, thin maxi skirts, stuff that covers up without being hot? GAP are good for unfussy clothes but agree re H

I used to be the same. Even now I have some issues wearing skirts/dresses. Nothing too girly as it makes me uncomfortable even though I like the look of it.

How about light coloured thin camo style trousers, skorts, leggings with a long top. One long enough to look like a dress. Think they are called t-shirt dresses. They can worn with trainers too. Halter tops with a longish shirt worn as a cardigan.

GatherlyGal · 15/01/2017 20:26

Skirts are an absolute no. That's fine I just want her to be comfy and it gets to her when people think she's a boy (all the time) so she wants to try something a tiny bit more girly.

NotMeNo I certainly don't have a go or push her into things she's not comfy with - I learned about 5 years ago that doesn't help.

I'm sure it will come when she's ready.

if she is in the sun she may want to protect her lips with balm. You can get tinted ones which bring a little femininity. Nivea pearly shine is a good one. would she be interested in that maybe?

NotMeNoNo · 15/01/2017 21:57

It's OK, you sound like a very understanding mum, in fact I wish I understood at the time how concerned my mum was about me (being her age now I can imagine). Smile

I sort of admire your DD's style rules OP, I was swayed by friends in my teen years re what to buy/wear. God knows what I looked like!

spencerreidswife
.... denim shorts with tights & a Levellers or Wonderstuff t-shirt were a staple in my wardrobe at uni with the obligatory Doctor Martens of course!!

Some of us still wear a variation of this. Blush

My dd loves shorts with tights and boots, she could wear a baggier top/hoody rather than a t shirt with it if she prefers.

Also if she likes bigger t shorts, my dd often ties them in a knot at the front/side. Or you can cut a slit at the front to tie.

Lemond1fficult · 16/01/2017 10:33

How about Monki? They're still quite baggy, but are definitely not unisex. Monki.com

I encouraged my DD to set up a Pinterest account and look up teen clothes. It really helped me to see what she pinned. She wasn't very interested in clothes until she was 12/13 but she had her definite likes and dislikes which was easier to indicate via pictures she found she liked.

I agree with the poster above that converse and flip flops are fine for a 13 year old on holiday. At tgat age most of dd's clothes were from Zara, H&M and some online like Biden, surf done and La Redout teen section.
