What can I wear with a plain navy dress to avoid looking like a matronly nun?

I ordered this dress, it fits, it's comfortable but it is very plain and I feel it looks like a nun's habit ( Catholic upbringing, had about 3 great aunts that were nuns, though none wore such short dressesSmile).
What can I wear it with to make it less plain? What colour tights? Boots? Shoes? Or should I send it back?

A bright pink scarf.

GetAHaircutCarl · 23/12/2016 18:20

I like metallic and navy, particularly silver ( bright or gun metal) or bronze.

Turbinaria · 23/12/2016 18:31

Navy tights, brown/tan boots leopard print scarf

neveradullmoment99 · 23/12/2016 18:47

Brown ankle boots, navy tights. Black ankle boots, black tights.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 23/12/2016 18:54

Bright jewellery/ shoes - metallics might work well as a PP suggested. Definitely needs lighter or brighter accessories to lift it a bit. I'd steer clear of brogues with that dress, definitely go for shoes that are a bit more glam.

BeckyAndTina · 23/12/2016 19:43

Thanks for all the great ideas. It does need a lift to stop it looking so serious. I'll shop around for ankle boots in the sale, and try with different scarves and colours.

Are those shoes green? Shock. I thought they were turquoise, but, bad enough. I will listen to you and stay away from them. I don't want anyone thinking I am wearing green shoes Smile

I only ordered the dress so DD could get free delivery of a present for her friend and because it was reduced. What a lot of trouble it's causing - or rather, great excuse for a new pair of boots.

Blue and green should never be seen

neveradullmoment99 · 23/12/2016 22:48

Its actually red and green should never be seen except upon an Irish queen.
I do like burgundy and forest green together though. Its a lot of rubbish.
Not sure about green and navy.

Gods, I hate 'rules' like that. I'm not generally a fan of colour, but if somebody tried telling me that two colours shouldn't be worn together, I'd be more likely to wear them together for the hell of it.

DollyPlastic · 23/12/2016 22:59

Silver converse.

SquiffyAtBreakfastOnEggnog · 23/12/2016 23:04

I love those shoes, which are turquoise not green!

neveradullmoment99 · 23/12/2016 23:05

Oh, just read that sometimes red can be replaced by blue in that saying [ not that i would ever go along with it] I think blue and green are quite nice esp navy and emerald green. I am so bored can you tell?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 23/12/2016 23:07

A silver scarf would look nice with it.

blueshoes · 24/12/2016 00:08

You need to break up the relentless of it (aka nun habit) with a soft scarf with some print.

Perhaps something like this: Ted Baker

JohnCheese · 24/12/2016 11:21

I have a palin navy Whistles dress, it's a bit short and that takes a certain amount of the nun-ish look away. I wear it with either a silver thin belt or a snakeskin (grey toned) belt, black opaques and ankle boots and ye olde biker jacket and a scarf. Oh and a silver hoopy necklace thing. Not statementy. Black opaques, not more than 60 denier, too thick and they look wrong. I've tried grey opaques too, don't like them with it.

JohnCheese · 24/12/2016 11:22

Plain navy dress, not palin. Michael clearly has nothing to do with my navy dress.

Destinysdaughter · 24/12/2016 11:23

A red feather boa? Xmas Grin

BeckyAndTina · 24/12/2016 12:19

Xmas Smile at red feather boa.

The scarf looks lovely blueshoes, thank you.

I have dug up some scarves and belts which go okay. Footwear is still a problem until I get something in the sales.

Thanks all and merry Christmas Star

Grey boots. Something like this. www.shoeaholics.com/brands/women/carvela-kurt-geiger/preston-grey-suedette-carvela?gclid=CKeK7bzpjNECFVOZGwodgEUBow

I heart these.

1horatio · 25/12/2016 10:27

I don't see why you shouldn't wear navy and burgundy... that can look very nice imo. (Although I agree, I dont think brown tights would look good, tbh)

I'm not sure how long the dress actually is but knee length boots may look good?
I personally would probably wear this with a belt. Or what about a cardigan and a belt for a relaxed look? (But I always try to wear comfortable clothes. So, my suggestions may not be the best...)
